Been thinking about the things I'm feeling disgruntled about with Ubuntu. First and foremost in the lack of reliability of recent versions. I can't really grumble about the development version not working as that's to be expected :lol And I expect the bugs in 9.10 aka Karmic to be fixed in Lucid eventually. Leaving that aside then, most of my grumbles are things like appearance and what's going on the CD distro. But also, the increasing minimum spec required to run the standard Ubuntu and even Xubuntu.

Trev has beaten me to having another look at Mint (which I quite like) and I have been pointed to another variation supposed to be lighter than Xubuntu in the Ubuntu Forums - and that's Lubuntu. It's new this year and still in development basically AFAICT. I'm currently downloading the latest ISO and will give it a go later. I'll report back :)

Let us know how it goes and what you think of it.

I`m liking Mint very much, but for some reason I`m only left with less than 1 gb of free space when I`m running it off a 4gb stick??
So I`ll have to partition and do a proper install to keep playing with it.

Downloaded, checked md5sum and burnt a CD-RW (have lots of old ones lying around). I'll try it shortly and let you know :)

OK - in Lubuntu, running off USB stick Live CD on laptop :) First observation - it works :lol Same setup works with AMD64 too :) Only thing is - I don't think persistence is working - had to set up FF anew. It's basically Ubuntu Karmic but with LXDE desktop (Light X Desktop Environment). It's simple but adequate I think.

More info when I've done more testing. Tomorrow :lol

Ok. How does it compare to Xubuntu? I would have thought Xubuntu was pretty light being xfce based.

Tried resizing the available space on my flash drive install. Odd that I appear to have 3Gb of space on the drive, but in use I only have 955Mb?
I tried resizing the Casper -rw file to 3Gb but it complained there wasn`t enough space to resize to that. Will try for 2Gb in a minute and see what happens.
