Are there (many?) things that won`t run on W7 that runs on XP? |

like what mate? only thing i have that wont run is my scanner but i think thats the Way the driver runs, dunno what cannon where thinking but it doesn't install a driver in the traditional way, it sort of sits waiting until it thinks its seen the scanner and goes for it, a very odd way of doing in things. Program wise apart from comodo (which now has both 32 and 64 bit W7 versions) and pangya (US version worked but EU doesnt yet) i have yet to find anything that wont work on the 64bit version mate. |

I`m just wondering if those who are going for W7 will need to dual boot with XP. I remember when Vista came out and the first victims...er.. I mean "early adopters" were going "Vista is brilliant....... my printer doesn`t work and my scanner doesn`t work and >insert popular game< won`t run... oh and my AV isn`t compatible..etc, etc,.... but its great" ![]() I was wondering if its going to be the same with W7. |

no, you install W7 and (for me at any rate) everything was installed from my printer to my wireless card. I am dual booting XP for 2 reasons, 1, i paid for it so i may as well have it installed and 2 everyone in my house is bricking it, they are not looking forwards to the change so the option will be there for them if they want it

Sounds like a good idea to keep XP as well just in case. |

I have found something that wont work with Windows 7 the Epson CD printing software and Epson never, never give out updates for it, they expect you to buy a new printer and get it with that which seems a little harsh

I`ve not tried it using Gimp in Windows, but it should work the same as Linux. Creating labels using Gimp is much more versatile than the Epson CD program and Gimp gives you more options for adjusting picture and print quality etc. I`d definitely give that a blast John. |

No, I haven't actually tried printing discs from Windows. I did use GIMP in XP a while back though and found it much more versatile than any other Windows image editing prog. In fact several of the apps I now use in Ubuntu, I used Windows versions previously. Quite a lot of the open-source apps have Windows versions now - well worth looking at for Windows users, I would think

John that script does work in Gimp for Windows mate if you want to give it a go. It goes in here: \Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\scripts ...and it works the same as the Lin version. ie. Filters>Script fu>Misc>CD label. The default gives you a full-face label and the Mini option a normal label. Do your stuff to create your label and (main menu) Script fu>Utils>CD Mask. The page setup and print options will probably be different, but hopefully you can set it to CD tray and you can sort out the print options. edit...I used the latest version of Gimp (2.6.7) http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html Edited by Phaedrus, Oct 20 2009, 03:18 PM.

I think the problem is the Windows 7 driver is different to the "real" epson one. The print CD program just says the CD printing portion of the driver isnt installed. Not to worry ill give gimp a go when i get round to installing it. Right my partitions are all resized (XP down to 50GB and W7 up to 450GB), my W7 install has been deleted and all my drive letters have been reassigned for the big day tomorrow

Found the official Epson Print CD for R300 with apparently W7 support. Epson Print CD for W7 Gimp is much better though. |

the print CD thing doesn't work because it is saying the CD printing driver component is missing still. As for Windows 7, it installed in 18 minutes and is a belter
