I have no idea how well it will be received. I have read reports saying its good and others saying its no better than Vista. :shrug

Mark Shuttleworth describes W7 as "A wonderful service pack on Vista" and while this may be technically true, that`s not necessarily a bad thing is it?

I do not like using XP at all now, it feels old, slow and outdated, W7 64bit has never crashed, locked up or owt, i love it to bits LOL

if i had older hardware i think i would stick with XP but W7 is much better at using multicore so it gets the best our of my quad core processor (which is probably why it feels quicker) and the 64bit version work a treat (unlike XP 64) so i may as well get the full benefit from my 4GB of RAM :)

XP will do for me too. 32bit and I only use it for Guitar Rig and the golf.

Fair enough John :) For my 64 bit dual-core, Ubuntu does me fine :) And I can afford it, being free :rofl

xp isnt too bad with dual core its quad that it cant really do anything with, Nero recode is over 1000FPS faster when you used under W7 than it is using XP :)

Well its a couple of weeks since it arrived and its even better than the evaluation version.

The box was the full retail box containing both 32bit and 64bit disc's, i had no hesitation installing the 64bit version which took a total of 18 minutes from the start of the install to being able to surf the net and since then its been nothing but positives.

I have not had a single crash or lock up and the finished version uses around 1.1GB of RAM on my system at boot (the evaluation version used around 1.8GB of RAM). I love the library's, they make XP feel like a dinosaur when you go back to using it and the built in system imaging and restore disc wizard is a natty feature, well done M$!

Well I only started to look at them because I wanted to look at a Mac music app (Logic Studio 8). Its a brilliant program and I would love to have it. The Guitar Rig app that I have to use windows for will run better on a Mac too.
As for the Mac itself... Well they are rather sexy machines. The new iMac and the Macbook Pro especially. Beautiful compact design, LED displays, touch sensitive mouse, precision engineered. i haven`t had chance to play with OSX much yet, but it looks very intuitive and user friendly.
The only downside is the cost. The new range of iMacs are around £940.

Just to expand on that so i dont look like an arsey git :lol

I am pretty competent when it comes to computers but using Ubuntu is like entering a whole new planet, in the 3 times i have installed it i have yet to get it on the net and yet to get it to update my video card driver and this is not what i want. At the risk of sounding like a Windows fanboy when W7 installed it had configured my wireless card, video card and even my printer with the correct vendor drivers not generic M$ ones by the time it had even fully installed. Until Linux is this easy to use it will never be anything more than a niche product no matter how free or secure it is.

I think the problem is that Linux is playing catchup all the time. With manufacturers favouring Windows and Mac, the open source world has to develop it's own drivers in many cases. nVidia now have Linux drivers, ATI don't. Hence users with recent ATI graphics cards find a problem with Linux in many case. I have one PC with ATI graphics card but about 5 years old now and Ubuntu Linux works OOTB with that. It also works with my new nVidia card OOTB. It now also works with all my wireless LAN devices OOTB.

Having said that, if you're happy with Windows, John, I think that's fine. I always say to people that if what you have works well for you, that's great - and I don't try to suggest they mess with anything else. OTOH I do agree with Trev that M$ have made themselves an unassailable top position and monopoly. Some might say that this is a good thing just as a dictatorship is a good thing. The answer is IMO that while the controller/dictator is beneficent maybe it is but it leaves the system open to corruption and paves the way for the controllers/dictator to milk the dependants - us mere mortals!

I have been watching the advance of PC usage over the years and seen more and more people getting computers and many more getting savvy in their use. Some 7 or 8 years ago I ran an instruction course on using computers for our Women's Institute. At that time very few had computers and where there was a computer in the house, were afraid to turn it on, let alone use it. Nowadays I find most of the ones I talk to about it not only have computers in the house but know how to use them with many having their own separately from their husbands.

It is that easy to use mate. But no matter how easy it is, or becomes (and it is becoming more user friendly with every release) it will always have a minority of users compared to Windows. Microsoft are in a position of total dominance. To the vast majority of users a Pc is Windows. They don`t differentiate between a computer and the OS.

I`ve said this before - It is not normal to have so much hassle installing and running Linux mate. I have installed various distros of Linux, especially the Ubuntu variants on loads of different machines, and in 99% of cases it installs easily and doesn`t take much to get everything set up and running perfectly.
Its all Microsoft`s fault anyway. Creating a situation where hardware vendors now feel they only need to cater for one OS.

I know you`re not a Windows fanboy John, and that you use it because it does what you need without hassle.
Ubuntu does all I need but I have to admit I have become a bit of a fanboy.

Maybe give the next version of UE a try. It will be based on Karmic and may well already have the drivers you need. If not, you just need a lan cable to connect and let it install drivers.
I know you are happy with W7 but it would be nice to have Linux as well. Then again I guess W7`s novelty value is going to keep you hooked into that for a while.
