Did you have to copy over the operating system or is that held in eprom or whatever? I know you can upgrade the OS by updating from the air and that some HD space is reserved for system use. |

The firmware to the box is held in hardware. From what i can gather Copy+ sets the files system and formats the drive as it goes. 140GB on this new drive will still be reserved for Skys use as well, you cant do anytrhing about that. |

The Amstrad was very easy to take apart which helped loads, i was gutted when we got an Amstrad box ill be honest but its been very reliable and it runs just about silent, it is also very handy that it doesnt have any void if broken warranty seals in it LOL. It would seem that Amstrad owned by Sky is different to the Amstrad of the 1980s slippy record decks. |

The drive is making some proper odd noises but if i remember when we first got the box it made some strange noises so i am going to leave it a few days to see if it is something stupid like the HDD doing background formatting while having to still record live TV cos don't forget when you change channel it needs to flush and start again so the drive could be working like a mental. If that doesn't work ill try to lower the noise in the acoustic management (although it was uber quiet in the doc ill be honest) |

I have had to take the 1TB drive out, it get so hot and so noisey it either hates the box or its a faulty drive, i have put an RMA in for it anyway and if the next drive is the same ill use it in my PC and try one of my 500GB drive in the box. |

Yeah so do i LOL Ebuyer now pay for the return so thats a belter! In my USB dock the drive made a right racket as well, it was reasonably quiet just doing a single task but get it seeking and it sounds like someone spilt a bucket of gravel in it and as you can imagine when it is in a sky box and you have the HDD recording 2 programs while playing a 3rd the heads are working overtime. One thing i did notice as well is that it was just sat on idle at 38c in the dock which when you think just holds a bare drive arse end up there should not be a great deal of heat build up, this makes me even more sus as the drive is a WD Green Power one, the 2 WD Green Power drives in my PC which have been powered up since 8am are currently 32c and they are sat on top of each other with a normal WD drive under them as well as all the other PC gubbins going on. |

Odd, my brother has a Samsung one and it is very quiet indeed, it is only just louder than my Amstrad and on mine all you can hear is the disc being accessed no fans or owt. |

Sky are shipping a new Amstrad box Trev, its a lot smaller and it has a 500GB drive in it albeit it with 250GB reserved for Anytime it comes with the new EPG and is supposed to be uber good so while he is in the first 30 days tell him to ring Sky about the noisy box, when an installer comes to swap it tell him to ask him for one of the new boxes.
