An odd thing about envelopes... I read in a review someone saying about a separate paper tray for stationary and how useful that was. I thought they meant envelopes but the two trays are for up to A4 and for photo paper up to 7"x5". A4 envelopes are longer than 7" more like 8.5" (just checked - eight and five eighths). May be OK for small envelopes. OTOH the max paper thickness quoted is 90gsm which is not very thick - envelopes are much thicker.

Have I found a deficiency having only unpacked it and read the manual, I wonder :( Trouble is, there are so many things to look out for when buying a printer (and most other things too) that it's almost impossible to find something that satisfies all requirements. I wanted an all-in-one, being fed up with messing about with a separate scanner, also fed up with almost illegible markings on DVDs and the flexibility of wireless was very desirable. AND most of all - affordable! The ability to print high quality photos and other artwork is also a big plus.

To tell the truth, if something completely satisfies me it must be PERFECT :rofl

Oh yeah that yellow thing. I have no clue what that does! :lol

I had the mrs with me to second guess everything.

I hope installing the pipslite drivers goes ok and you get a lovely Ubuntu test page :)

Without actually trying it out there is one thing I will say - I love the look of it - neat and functional :) :)

I'll find somewhere to put it to set up and check out tomorrow :)

Well... curiosity got the better of me :lol Moved the R245 off it's place onto the floor and put the PX700W there instead. It's bigger but just fitted in the space :)

I plugged it in and installed the ink tanks and let it set itself up while I did something else :lol It was showing Copy so I thought "That'll do to try it out". So I grabbed my pile of paper from the R245 and put it in the paper tray. Found something with plenty of colour and pressed Start. Low and behold, out the slot came a copy of what I'd put in the scanner. Muted colours but I was printing on ultra cheapo paper. So COPY WORKS! :)

Next I took the USB lead from the R245 and plugged it in the back. Computer already on and running Ubuntu. It found the printer and recognised it as Epson so I just scrolled down the model list. No PX700W but there was a TX700W so I tried that and printed out a test page from Ubuntu. Nicely graded Greyscale and all the colours resulted :) :) RESULT!!!

So I currently have the printer working from the USB connection :) :) Easy-peasy :lol No doubt Ethernet and wireless will be a little more difficult!

One thing I can say - it's quicker and quieter than the R245 :) So far so good :) :)

Yes it`s a nice looking machine. Nice that the paper goes inside it.

Ours is in the living room at the minute :)

Well, it's nice enough looking for the lounge - matches video recorders etc. :lol And a perfect match for my Samsung HD TV :) Yes, mine's in the lounge too :lol

Yes, paper inside, out of sight is a nice feature :)

Not yet. Been busy with other things, I'm afraid :( Did print out the receipt for it - emailed from PC World. Still on USB though.

Probably get at it this evening when darkness precludes doing some other jobs (after feeding and putting the livestock to bed etc.).

Sure do! :lol They know their names too :) And love lots of fuss :)

Took some time out to install the driver and stuff, that all went fine :) Next job is to connect via Ethernet cable to router and set that lot up. It's currently still connected via USB. I added New printer with that connection and it found the printer and automatically used the new PPD file. So I have two connections, one using the TX700W driver from Ubuntu and the other using the new PPD. Both work (USB).

Disconnected USB and connected a Cat5e cable from printer to router. Went to printer setup > New. If found the printer on the network, asked for a driver and I chose the new PPD file. Then printed a test page. :) Simple-s :lol

One step further :) Printing from wired network :) Now to wireless :lol

Its the wireless one that counts :) ....Oh and don`t forget the dvd printing script for gimp :)

Then its just the scanner :lol
I haven`t managed to get the scanner working from Ubuntu yet. Its not really needed. You can scan without the pc and copy to print or save to a flash drive. You have to be at the scanner to put docs on anyway, so you might as well use the buttons while you`re there. :shrug
Would be nice to get a full screen scan preview though, and it would complete the machines compatibility with Ubuntu.

I seem to have a problem... I can't connect to my router admin control :( Put 192,186.0.1 in the address box in Firefox and it says it can't connect - times out :(

If I go into Printer Setup and New, it finds printer if plugged into router and not if it isn't. I can find no way to change the connection to wireless. I may be missing something :shrug

EDIT... I tried powering down the router for over 10 seconds and powering up again. It reconnected in due course but still can't connect to 192,168.0.1 :(

What make is your router? Netgear?

Double check your syntax Gina. Just to make sure you aren`t using commas instead of full stops and the numbers are right etc. Also if you have entered it wrong once, firefox has a tendency to auto fill the address bar with the previously misspelled address.

Yes - Netgear DG834GT. I'll see if I can find the manual and check I've got the right address. They are dots between the numbers. I reckon I must have got the address wrong :shrug Sort of daft thing I'd do :lol I've searched my backups to see if I'd made a note of all such things, but no, not found anything - probably over security concious. Not that there's anyone around who could cause any trouble anyway!

:rolleyes Thank you Trev :) Yes, I remembered it wrong!!!! I had the 6 and 8 reversed :whistle I'll try again.

Meanwhile, can you tell me what you did to get wireless working with the printer, please? I know how to set up fixed IPs (I think) but how do you persuade the printer to use wireless?

I'm in! :) :) I haven't found the manual though and guess what.... blush.... this is embarrassing :( :( I wrote my admin password in the manual and now I can't remember it :( I've tried all the permutations I generally use!

I may have to resort to Restore Factory Settings. I remember I upgraded the firmware to something non-standard that made it work better in some way but I forget the details now. Have you upgraded your firmware?
