Being on a SIM only deal with T-Mobile it makes getting a new phone a bit of a pain even though the actual tariff is cracking value. I have had a Sony Ericsson W910i for about 10 months and i am sick to the back teeth of it rebooting at random 3 and 4 time a day, its inability to hold a signal and crap flat membrane keypad. Anyway i was in the market for a new phone and went in to the T-Mobile store in Scarbough to be met with the cold shoulder because i am a SIM only punter even though i have been a T-Mobile customer since the day it started. I didnt want the SIM card and forced £10 credit you must buy with a phone so when i questioned it the bloke rattled on about everyone being the same, even the Carphone Wharehouse. I just tunred round and said thanks for the tip, ill go to the CPW as their phones are suplied SIM free, if i must pay it i want a phone that isnt locked to one network with a specific firmware on it.

When i got hold of the Tocco Lite in the CPW the bloke asked me why i wanted to change my current phone, i explained it was shite and it was going in the bin LOL He said did you buy it from us? Yes i replyed and he put my details in and said ok we can offer you 35 quid for you old phone making the Tocco Lite 65 quid. I was a bit surprised cos i didnt have the charger, or headset or owt on me but he said it wasnt needed so i took the trade in deal.

As for the phone its self for a cheapy the touch screen works incredibly well, it isnt nothing like as good as a G1 iPhone but it is responsive and very easy to use. I dont really use mobile internet so the lack of G3 isnt a problem. The interface is brilliant, with 3 main screens that you can place widgets on and i can text faster than a 16 year old on speed, the QWERTY keypad is good but the T9 implementation is the best i have used so texting on the normal keypad is a breeze. Call quality is very loud and very clear and the music player is excellent, i have an 8GB micro SD card in mine so plenty of space as well. The 3.2MP camera is remarkably good, i want expecting much at all but i was pretty impressed with it to the point of i may actualy use it as a point and shoot, the lack of flash makes night shots a no no though.

I wished i had dumped Sonny Ericsson years ago now, i stuck with them because i thought better the devil you know but i wished i had not cos they feel miles behind now.

That's very interesting John :) :) Thank you for posting :)

I'm fed up with mobile phones!! :( Several have just died the death but the last two have not been very usable. I bought what looked like a neat little one with camera, bluetooth etc. from Tesco (Virgin network). It functioned alright but it was too small to use easily. The buttons were too small and I needed my reading glasses to see it.

After a while, I decided I needed a bigger one that I could actually use so bought a Motorola Razr 3 (I think that's the model). Nice big flip open display, reasonable size keypad with back light. I say "back light" for the keypad but you can only see it in total darkness at full brightness. The keys looked OK in the shop but when you get it in normal light the legends are virtually invisible unless you get it at just the right angle. It has a metal effect finish with a sheen. Texting is virtually impossible and entering a phone number is difficult. Fortunately, I have all my usual numbers stored in the phonebook and the menu and navigation buttons are well marked and clear. Apart from that, it quite often loses the date/time setting.

I've been looking on the net for "big button" phones but without paying a lot of money they seem very poor. Oh yes, the buttons are big but the display is terrible! :( They have the advantage of being "SIM free" and not tied to any particular network. Guess I'll have to go into a mobile phone dedicated shop (or two) and see what's about.

The tocco lite may be a good phone for you mate because the buttons are on the screen its self i reckon they are over 1cm wide and about 1cm high and a pretty gentle tap registers with the phone, you can also set the phone to give a quick vibration on a scale of 0 to 7 so you can actualy feel you have hit the key but i have found it that good i have even turned that feature off.

This photo is direct off the phone with no editing other than a resize to 1000px wide http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll111/MrBelter/tocco.jpg given the tiny lens i think it is pretty good, its deffo better than my first ever Canon digicam.

WOW!! That's a brilliant picture for a mobile phone John :) :) Yes, I'll certainly take a look at that mobile - sounds really good. And SIM free means I can just transfer the SIM from my present phone :)

Sounds like a great phone, and ticks all my boxes I must say.

Thinking of going on a T-Mobile "Solo Fixed" sim too. I`m using my Orange payg a lot more than I used to.

Took a look at the Tocco Lite info and I like it :) I particularly like the qwerty keyboard - that would make texting a realistic possibility - I really just can't get on with having several letters on each key, even with prediction. It's a bit more than I can afford but if it means I have a phone I can really use it is probably worth it. Better than spending thirty quid here and forty quid there etc. and still not getting a usable product!! Trouble is, we could also do with a house phone setup with answerphone.

The good thing about the T9 on it is if you miss a key when texting it still seems to know what you was trying to spell and puts it in anyway, i like the fact if you spell dont it automatically spells Don't etc.

if you can get a signal where you live you cant beat 350 minutes and 33,000 texts a month for 15 quid with no contract mate. My first mobile was a quid a minute billed by the minute :rofl

Well after having my Tocco Lite online order cancelled by my bank, twice :shakehead I gave up ordering one online and went to the shop to get one.
Belter phone with some great features. Virtual buttons are large and clear and responsive. I especially like being able to switch the phone off at night, and have it auto power up for the wake up alarm :thumbsup
Solo Fixed 15 SIM sorted (after some confusion from a t-mobile staff member who didn`t seem to understand it).

Cheers John for the recommendation and clearing up how the contract works. :clap

Great Trev :) I'm definitely thinking of getting one when my bank balance has recovered enough - maybe next month after my pension goes in :)

I went to Carphone Warehouse because their phones are all unbranded and unlocked.

mine started to double "press" on certain areas of the keypad but i just re calibrated it and its ok, i would suggest when you calibrate it you use your finger and not a finger nail or something else to try and make it more accurate because when you go back to using your finger its expecting something more fine to press it.

I have given my Tocco to my youngest and got a Sony Ericsson C902 in all black. I got fed up of the Tocco not sending messages and people thinking i was ignorning them.

What made you go for the C902 John?

When i went for the tocco i actualy went in for a sony ericsson c510 but much prefered the Tocco, at the time the C902 was £200, this time around the c902 had dropped to the same price as the c510 so i went for the higher model.

I think i prefer the screen size and touch screen of the tocco but the camera and the fact my texts now get sent are nice, it is all metal as well which is nice.
