Evening all, after a bit of advice as usual. I have had some guy knocking on the door from gkrkarate.com asking if anyone within my household would like to join. Obviously my wife said i wont be back from work till later so he left saying he would return over the next few days to catch me in. Sounds dodgy!!! Long story short my 7 yr old daughter has been asking about martial arts for a while now, she already swims once a week & may be starting scuba diving lessons in a few weeks with my mate who teaches it, Anyway i thought with such a wealth of knowledge out there someone must have heard of this company or a reputable company in the North East. After googling the name gkrkarate i have come up with some people who think this is the muts nuts & others who wouldnt touch it with a barge pole. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers LT |

Hey fella, Always worth trying out a few schools locally to see which instructors your daughter likes. Most are happy for you to go to a session as a "taster" without signing up to anything... Can't help on that particular one though... |

Not a Karate person myself but my ex sister in law studied Shotokan style for around 8 years. I'll try and get a contact for her and get in touch. There are different styles although Shotokan is probably the more widely known As for joining important stuff. 1. As your 7 year iold daughter is going to be involved check their child protection policies and that instructors have been CRB'd. 2. Check the instructors training background and the reasons they do it. Also ask questions that will highlight how they think about young uns 3. Ask if you can observe a session or be able to sit in so you can see how the instructor is around kids 4. Do the school you select have an emphasis on entering competitons as this can sommetimes be a marketing tool to expand the appeal of the style or at worst supplement the instructors income 5. Do they insist the appropriate gear is only bought through them. Probably getting discounts and may or may not be passing these on this site seems to have a balance on all sorts of angles http://www.all-karate.com/ Oh yeah before I sign off. Don't forget now Wax On - Wax Off :teehee |

Be a bit careful when signing up to these on the door, there'e been instances down here, where these people have been doing the hard sell, payments up front etc, which is totally in contradiction to the martial arts philosophy , not saying that there bad schools etc but shouldn't be conducting there business that way, old chinese proverb say "he who canvasses for work is not vely busy!" Try your local community centres and leisure centres, these are normaly great for seeking out more info on this pastime :gr8: |

LT, I am a current 3rd degree Black belt instructor of a Korean Style of martial arts, not gonna mention a name as it is not important... BeeCee said it right, check out local schools and clubs in your area attend a few classes. NOT the first you you enter. many instructors will try to sign you up on first contact, dont. There is no such thing as a bad martial arts, only bad instruction.. also not all martial arts suit all people. We all are different sizes, shapes and abillities. Keep looking and trying until you find something that appeals to you and that fits. I would also recommend looking for a club that has a national if not international presence. not just some local 1st degree who thinks he is better than his instructors. This is a common mistake. I still get taught from my instructors and their instructors and compete in tournaments around the world, although this is a sub-culture and not part of the main ethos, we are a tradional martial arts. BLF said some important points also insurance is a good one, not just for them but for you, the best have it many dont.. Anyway I hope you find something out, if you want any info PM me or catch me online. Good Luck. One other thing, Karate is not the only Martial arts. Judo, Jujitsu, Taekwondo, Kuk Sool won, Hapkido are but a few of many thousands, Edited by Jade_Dragon, 29 Aug 2008, 10:23 AM.
