As agreed in the other topic http://s1.zetaboards.com/The_Old_Codgers_LMZF/topic/292907/ We need to choose a new charity to link our community to. Please vote via the poll. The choices are from the suggestions made in the other topic. Any further suggestions, place them here and i'll add them to the poll. Our support of the Stroke Association was a great success. The total raised is: £1654.10 Fanstastic amount. This figure includes the £340 Maureen Robertson (Mrs Brightlightsfdade) raised through her work. Thank you to everyone who donated, bought zippo's, took part in charity matches and donated proceeds from various sales/giveways on the forum. :gr8: |

Put my vote with cancer research, all very good causes and is hard to pick just one, but an ex's step dad has been effected by it recently so its the closest to me. |

Wish I'd seen the original thread as I would have thrown Scope and Macmillan into the mix but in their absence I'll vote for cancer research. |

sorry missed the original post - cancer research for me coz my mum died of cancer 2 years ago. the hostel she was in was sobel house in oxford any chance of some charity funds going to them? as they were amazing - the nurses cared soo much and even shed tears when my poor mum passed away. they do amazing work and was too upset to really let the nurses know how much all they did meant to me my brother and sister.

My decision is a tough one as I know people affected by all the areas of the above charities except for air ambulance. I'm ruling out Cancer Research as they are already well backed. Help for Heroes is very relevant at this time given the decisions by our government and the likely ongoing deployment to Afghanistan, however lower numbers affected overall. Stroke Association is ongoing for my father in law but have already benefitted I'm voting for Alzheimers purely because of the scale of the problem and the relatively limited amount of specialist services. Other choices - probably too late could be Headway - head injuries or any links to palliative care aka the hospice movement |

Such a tough tough choice. Cancer research - not for me,personal choice, controversial as this may be,but sorry,i have my reasons. Alzheimers Disease - I've seen people that suffer from this and those that are affected by it,it is sad and sometimes heartbreaking to see someone you love deteriorate in such a way as to not even recognise their own family,so sad. Association For Air Ambulance - Not seen at first hand what these people can do,only on the tv,sterling job and so underfunded, crying out for support. Help For Heroes - Something close to my heart, bieng ex-service I have seen what happens when you are deemed not useful enough to her majesties forces anymore,oh they may say they care and show figures and pretty pictures to back up their claims, trust me,the truth is much different,if you aint fit enough, out you go,and since there are no longer any forces hospitals (mores the pity),the injured serviceman are sent to civvy hospitals and forgotten about. Crazy Hats Breast Cancer - i'm afraid I have never heard of this one, obviously breast cancer is a huge concern, many stories in the press and on the tv,so sad what this terrible disease can do. So tough a decision. Edited by xxSTARGATExx, 13 Aug 2008, 08:22 PM.

I voted for helping our heroes as i got injured during a tour of duty in 1993, i ended up leaving the army & got nowt of the tight fisted government until i fought them & received a measley £30.00 quid a week. I lost my career, mates & durex (get it durex ha!). Never mind though, doing all right now. Keep up the good work lads. I should be able to get a signed Newcastle United shirt shortly for Auction (when my secretary gets back from holidays again) LT |

I did some work on a new Cancer Research building, it went £20million over budget, when then original job was completed they ripped out most of the new labs etc, and then re-designed them (not once but twice). I later found out that the money used to build these labs was the Charity money. So as much as i hate cancer related illnesses, i also hate how the money gets spent...a big no vote from me. I thinks a simple charity like Air Ambulance or Hereos or even Nobleck's pocket are more worthy in my opinion. |

I agree with you nobleck, Cancer is the worst of the bunch but our donations would be a drop in a vast ocean. the amount we would raise would probably buy some new pens for the administrators!. I seem to lose a relative every year to the disease in one form or another so am not disrepcting the charity. One of the smaller ones would benefit more from our help. Crazy hats for example is a local charity that I support, they don't pretend to be able to cure the disease but they make sure that almost all the money they receive goes to those who need help in one way or another. Most of the smaller charities are the same IMO. Help for heroes for example... The amount we would raise could buy a prosthetic leg for someone who has stepped on a landmine and gets no help from the government? Edited by Ivor_Bigun, 15 Aug 2008, 09:42 AM.

I agree Cancer is horrible, i have lost lots of relatives to the dreaded disease, but i hate how they abuse the charity money-as i mentioned about 4 posts previous. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but seriously the smaller charities would benefit more from our donations. If we go with cancer research i'm not being horrible, but they won't get another penny from me. I'd rather give my money to the Childrens ward at Addenbrookes hospital. Same here, and what about the people that can't get the perscribed drugs (some exspensive)that they would benefit from,(postcode thingy) how would they be benefiting from it if they can't have certain drugs that would prolong their lives, but if they lived in a different postcode they would, definate no from me too. |
