the Great
The leaves rustle, and a black cat stares at me through a small bush.
The cat’s not important, it’s just a feature in this sad little picture.
These woods are sweatier than the last,
Like a brazen bull compared to the stake I was burnt at.
I listen to the wind, to the secrets and myths it whispers in my ears.
A gremlin or imp or some tiny devil sits over my shoulder,
And he tells me to swoop in, to drive my blade through the heart of a deer,
To slit the throat of a lamb and paint myself in its blood.
Hunger and lust are present in my reality,
But I just don’t know if this is what I’m looking for.
I miss the taste of a meat I’ve never had, the juiciness and the burnt edges.
I’m very sure that if one thing’s for certain, I want that perfect bite.
I’m going hunting. But not for food.
I’m hunting for the perfect woods to hunt in,
For the perfect flames to cook with,
For the perfect spear to kill with.
I’m not hunting for a deer, I’m hunting for a deer worth hunting.
I’m going hunting. And it’s all a charade.

After reading this for the first time it made me think about the society we live in, well, in the "western part". It's not about food, it's about the perfect meal. It's not about clothes, it's about the perfect outfit.

After the second time, I thought a little deeper. The strive for the perfect setting could work on so many levels. I like writings that give you something to think about.

I'm glad you read so much into it. Most people who've commented on this one around the web didn't read anything into it other than hunting deer. It makes me happy to see someone able to find a subtler meaning to it.
