Starr turned to her 'guards' uneasily. She wasn't sure. But she could read the betrayal on her guards' eyes. So far what this woman said seemed so true. That Seton frightened her, though had never been outright mean. But the other two had seemed nice enough, though irritated easily, they had seemed to be on her side. Maybe this woman wasn't right. Starr stifled a laugh at the circus act. They had a sense of humor, they were nice, they went out of their way to bring her here. Maybe... But by now it was too obvious, the jokes, everything: they were hiding something and no matter what it was, she wanted to know. "Huh. I'll come, if you tell what you're hiding. And it's obvious you're hiding something." No reaction. "C'mon, spill. I'm not one to judge. Unless you killed my mum, I don't really care what you did." She said truthfully. She didn't care. This woman seemed to eager to dish dirt on them, too joyful... Starr wasn't sure what to think. She was hoping, praying, that her guards would say something silly like 'robbed a bank' or 'burned some sheep'. Not nice, but still, forgivable. |

"Stop." Seton said sharply, his eyes focused on Kate but his words directed towards everyone--it was all coming out in waves and he knew that they had already screwed all of it up. He was already thinking of their cells and how he hoped no one had taken his bunk or there would be bloodshed later on that night. Because if first their plan to escape was thwarted by Kate and Starr, he wanted nothing more than to return to the cell he knew. If that was all off too, he was going to completely flip his lid. "I have made mistakes in my past, yeah...but haven't we all?" Seton asked quietly, eyes still set on Kate. He wanted nothing more than for her to go away--for her to run off and just forget that she ever saw him. This was all too much happening at once, he didn't need to add this blast from the past destroying it even more. "There is no spell, no trickery, no ruse that we could play on this girl...we were assigned as her guards and that is it. There is no need for me to explain meself--or these lads--to ya. It's not ya business." Seton snapped back, eyes only leaving Kate as Grish started to speak. He gave an eye roll at the man's 'humor' but there was a hint of a smile on his face--one that disappeared a second the name 'Starr' was uttered. He stood up a little straighter and grew stiff, all expression leaving his face. "What we're hidin'?" He repeated quickly, eyes shifting to Starr. He was doing his best to ignore Kate, to over power whatever she could cut in with, with his own words as he took a step forward. "All right, lookie here laddie...we're hidin' somethin' all right but it ain't what ya think it is--this woman, this woman here--" Seton pointed towards Kate but did not stop in his words, mustering up all his ability to lie. Again, it wasn't in his person to do it--he could bend the truth but to flat out lie was hard for him. He leaned forward, dropping his voice low with the intention of Starr only hearing him. "It's what she's done here that ya should be worried about, not us...we told ya we didn't have any suspects in ya mum's murder but that was to keep ya calm, to keep ya from freakin' out on us. No, no...this woman here, she knows who did it. She knows and she ain't tellin' us." Seton said, the truth somewhere intertwined with his words. Kate did in fact know who did it...but she didn't know know she knew. It was a web full of dramatic confusion and mishaps but Seton didn't care--if it worked, if it got Starr away from this woman and with them, he would bend the truth as much as it would budge. "The sooner ya come with us, the sooner ya get away from this lad, the safer ya'll be--we ain't hidin' a thing...she is." |

"Ruse...his name is Ruse?" Kate said in a slightly low manner. "Like as in lies and cleverly crafted stories - ruse?" She wheeled back around to look at Starr. "You're going to trust a man named Ruse?" She asked plainly. "Starr was it?" She still had a hold of the girl's wrist as she glared back at Seton before peeking at Grish. "The circus...?" She asked in disbelief. "Wait a minute now." She gave Starr's wrist a little tug. "They're supposed to be your guards, your protectors. In my experience guards uphold the law, not tread on it - whether it's murder or something more minor. And not everyone's made criminal mistakes." She looked up to Set again. She let out a sigh. "Your mother was murdered?" She frowned and shook her head a little. "I'm terribly sorry for your loss, that's awful. I don't know who those ones are. But Set, I know him well - he spend a good deal of time with my family and he's not to be trusted. Last I knew he was in jail himself." She told Starr pointedly. "Seton Nym, don't you dare pretend to not know who I am or bat an eye at me. That's the second time you've pretended to look through me. Surely you're up to no good with all this nonsense if you're that settled on convincing this girl you're a person of decent stature. I'm not even pretending you want to be considered good - I only mean decent." She puffed up. "This girl's mother was murdered and you were assigned to her as protection? You, of all people - after a murder. Perhaps you don't think you need to explain, however you should consider a better lie than this." |

Ruse groaned inwardly. This was definitely getting worse by the minute. He even whirled around to look at Grish when he began to speak. He cringed at the man in a silent plea to stop - and an audible groan escaped him when his jail name fell from the man's lips and not Janen as he'd told her while they were still in the prison. And then Set jumped in and Ruse had to slap his hand to his forehead. "Do you know someone everywhere?" He grumbled under his breath at Set. "Infamy isn't a good thing in our case." He frowned, still hissing in a hushed whisper. He had actually gotten a little attached to Starr, like Grish, he would consider himself an overall likable guy and really did have good intentions. He was merely caught doing the wrong things at the wrong times. But that didn't mean to. He moved closer to Set; though a little part of him was starting to doubt his cell mate as well. He wondered if there was something he didn't know. "Alright, alright!" He said loudly. If the other people came, the ones Ruse could see gathering by the fire it could get ugly fast - particularly if they too recognized Set. Ruse had no idea how this girl recognized him, or if he might know any of the others; but if they had the same opinion of Set that the girl, Kate, did there might be pitch forks and a lynching. "He wasn't assigned to her." Ruse told Kate and then looked at Starr. "I was and yes it's Ruse - that's my nickname. Well not ruse, not like you think - it's because I'm cunning; not a liar." He said plainly with a little smirk as if it were the most ridiculous thing he'd ever heard. They were making his job that much harder. "You see these two - they were just me mates and they're along for the ride. We picked up the other girl along the road and now here we are. The four - er - five of use. Know what, Kate if you don't trust us that much why don't you come with us." He shot a discerning glare at Set. Their plan had been to dump the girl - he had no idea why Set wanted to hold onto her; furthermore what trouble Kate could bring. They could dump them both when they got to the city - but it would at least get her to shut up. "And, I'm thinking that it's mighty nice of you to invite us for food." After six months of nothing but beanstalk the roasting pig smelled awful good. He even heard his stomach give a little lurch and let it's presence known by a growl. "Is that ale?" He asked pointing at the barrels off in the distance. "How quaint. Grish they have ale." That was the last thing Ruse needed, but he so desperately wanted. He would have the whole camp in songs and stories if they let him into one too many of those. |

Starr stared back and forth at the arguments again. She kept nearing Kate's side, then Seyton's, then Kate's...over and over and over. "Yes, she was murdered. The way I see it, stealing a couple of gold coins isn't quite the same." She said, with an odd smile on her face. Kate was right. Crime was crime. Starr's eyes opened wide as she turned to Kate. "Do you? Do you know the..." she couldn't even muster the needed hate... "criminal who killed my mother? Because if you do... I would really like to know." She doubted anyone would pay attention as they continued to fight. As soon as Ruse yelled Starr jumped. She hadn't been expecting that. It was late, she was tired and horrified by the day's events, and yet, here she was... in the middle of all this Food, the concept sounded so strange, so delicious. She nodded. "Yes, food would be good." She said. |

Kate took a step back, with a look of shock on her face. Then she issued Set a dark scowl. She had seen him lean over and whisper to her. "Hardly." She hissed. "I don't even know who your mother is - or was. That doesn't make me sympathize any less for your loss; but that criminal is putting the wrong ideas in your head. I know no one in the prison - save this man here and my uncle Gabriel. So it would have to be one of those two who committed this if that's what he means." She snorted off handedly. She had no concept or belief that it actually was either of them. She gave Starr's wrist a little tug and brought her in closer to the group. "Yes, join us - you whole lot." She let her eyes drift to Set again and she figured she'd need to keep a close eye on him in this mess. "You lot look staved." It was precarious, the entire arrangement - and Kate still refused to trust them. Even so it didn't make her any less hospitable. The girl, if anything, was a good hostess - she truly believed in the welcome all and live to the fullest; it also wasn't going to keep her from keeping an extraordinarily close eye on Set. "I hope you like song and wine - because that's all you'll find her. Warm fires, good friends and hearty food." She told them before they made it to the logs. If the promise of food would make them stay as well, for the sake of the girl, Kate would allow it. She wouldn't allow them to be suspicious among her friends. However as she inched them all closer it was no surprise to her that her friends all happily grinned at them and welcomed them with open arms pointing off and showing them where they could find grub and libation. One of them had already broken into song again and others were joining in. |

Starr moved gratefully along, nearing Kate. She wanted so much to trust this girl, to befriend her. Her stomach growled... "You're right I am starving." She said kindly. "So if these guys are criminals, how did they become my guards?" She whispered. "And thank you for the offer of food." She added humbly. |
