Wendell sighed heavily, turning on his heels to face the group of people behind him. It was the oddest expedition he would personally accompany--at least second. He simply relished in the fact that he stood on two leg for this particular trip into the 10th Kingdom. But to bring along a fairy, a woman with more fire and wit he could have expected, a native, and a maidservant he had little desire in establishing distinguishing features, Wendell was absolutely certain this could go completely out of control in a matter of moments. He had insisted for all of them to change clothes and rest up before leaving--although 'resting up' had only lasted an hour before a certain endlessly bothersome vixen demanded to leave then and there. Wendell had taken less grandeur clothing but still prided the fact that he was wearing a sash of silks and crisp, white trousers that put him miles ahead those he ruled over. "We cannot stay long. Only long enough to prove Wolf's existence--" He eyes flickered absentmindedly towards Jasella as he held his hands loosely in front of him. "I'd much rather not visit this place again--how you ever tolerated it, Anthony, I will never know. I admire your valor." Wendell uncovered the large, polished mirror and carefully rotated the round engraving on the frame. The surface of the mirror sparked to life--their own reflection faded away to reveal the grass and trees of Central Park. Come--ladies first." He said with a slight bow, not at all hiding the small amount of taunt in his voice--it wasn't entirely common to the king but just being in Jasella's presence completely skewed a majority of his normal emotions. He found himself trying to irritate her in the slightest--without even realizing he was attempting it in the first place. |

"Has anyone asked for anything more?" Jasella arched an eyebrow at the king, however a second later any amount of remote or possible kindness left her and she scowled at him. She looked over to Tony, wondering how he could tolerate this...this king. But the dumb smile on the man's face after what he must have considered a compliment made Jasella suck in an annoyed breath. There was absolutely no hope. "You're wasting your flattery." She scowled darkly at the king by his obvious expression that showed he thought himself particularly clever. She did not find him clever, she did not find him cute or entertaining. "Not to mention your breath." She managed a taut thin lipped smile at him. His arrogance was hurting her head a little, as was his obvious neglect in treating her as an equal; once more putting on that stupid courtly charm that only made him look at that much more ridiculous in her mind. Men with their constant need to prove something only slowed progress. She understood that they thought they had to compensate, but she had taken the time to prove that that was simply an obstacle...and it only got progressively worse, which instigated her to be irritated all that much more. She was at a standstill and it was frustrating her more than she liked as she was left with flushed cheeks. If she yielded and accepted his offer of going first it meant she buckled; however if she stood her ground like she wanted she was wasting precious minutes. It was with that in which she found her dilemma and it was a massive one. Her pretty little lips were puckered unhappily as she made sure he saw how displeased she was by the look in her eyes; which were glued to his. She felt the aggravation rise in her chest - she could even hear it pounding in her ears as she got progressively more annoyed. Even so she was at an impass. Finally after a mild scrunching of her nose she took Belle by the arm. "Come then - if they want us to brave this new dangerous world first...then we shall." She said. "Heaven forbid their be a mud puddle on the other side that would need a coat or cloak to cover it." And with that she stepped through...but not before pointing out that they were going first into what could be dangerous; in that moment it was her only defense for her lack of desire to continue their staring contest. |

Never a fan of confrontation, Belle stood back as Jasella and Wendell continued to argue, doing her best to stay out from the middle of it. The last thing she needed was for her to ask her opinion or something of the kind and bring her into their constant squabbling. For once, she stood right behind Jasella and not in front of praying for out of sight, out of mind. Only when it began to grow out of control, she did make her presence known with a soft hand or a well placed interruption of servantly kind, made up dust on her collar or something of the sort. Just the fact that they were about to go to this whole new kingdom... If Belle had her way, she would stay within Second Kingdom all the time. It was soley due to Jasella's position that had her travelling the countryside and the whole time she was gone, she was homesick for her own small room in the Alcott's large manor. As they argued, Belle studied the mirror. She had heard of them, everyone had, but she had never thought she would be face to face with an actual magic mirror. One of the infamous travelling magic mirrors. She could almost forget that she would soon actually have to use it to be sent to this mysterious Tenth Kingdom and just bask in the fact that it was there at all. That she was actually in the presence of one of the Evil Queen's infamous mirrors. It was all rather awe-inspiring for a moment and she got lost in it until she felt Jasella's hand on her elbow and she looked quickly towards her, her eyes growing slightly wide at her statement before she tried to force back a calm exterior though how successful she was, she was unsure. Before she knew it, Jasella had pulled them through the mirror and she was left standing in what appeared to be a grassy forest. "Next time you're about to do something potentially stupid, please volunteer yourself." She said bluntly, more than she had spoken throughout most of the day but free to say with only her and Jaz standing there. Belle had more to say but before she could, her eyes travelled up and out. Beyond the small forest they seemed to be in were lights. Lights that rose high up in the sky in all directions, lighting up the night as the unfamiliar sound of horns and traffic were heard farther on in the distance. "Holy sh..." She started to say, her words cut short as she caught the tip of a boot coming through the mirror behind her and she immediately shut her mouth. Edited by Belle Copeland, Jul 9 2008, 01:17 AM.

"I didn't know any different." Tony said. "But I'll take valor anyway." He beamed. The truth was Tony hated New York. The only part of it he missed was the authentic beer. The beer here, when able to be found was not nearly as perfected as can of the brew he could pick up at the corner store back home. Aside for Virginia, that was the only thing he missed. Baseball, sometimes he missed baseball too; but it was a small price to pay for the grandeur that was the 9 Kingdoms - and his place in that world. He sighed a little as he watched his friend prod the royal and her in turn take the bate. This was a cat and mouse game he'd seen hundreds of times just on a different playing field; but the point and outcome were always the same. He was speaking as he stepped through. "I can't be sure where they live or anything, but we could try my mother-in-law; no scratch that." He frowned at the thought. "I'd rather scour the city on my hands and knees first." He'd already stepped through, behind the fairy who's magic had wrapped him in a fancy wingless tux that had Tony questioning what exactly he thought New York was like. If he thought that was fitting in clothes Duke Dexter was sure to be surprised. He managed stepping right next to Belle. "The lights? They do it every time." He smirked. He turned to see if Wendell was following. "Can I bring back a six pack?" He smiled hopefully at the king after he appeared next to him. |

Dexter had easily concealed his appearance with magic. It merely took a wink. He wondered, as he passed through the mirror, if he would be able to use his gift of shadow step to come here on a whim after having visited it. Dexter had a special gift within his magical abilities, like many of his kind had the ability to wrangle magic in some way. Dexter learned at a very young age that shadows held a certain power that many could not see - he could step into the edge of one and step out of the edge of another anywhere he could imagine. He wondered if knowing this place now, imagining it - if he'd be able to link the interwoven shadows from his land and this one. With all the lights shining bright his mind exploded with possibilities. So much that he slipped into the nearest shadow and out of one across the park and then right next to Belle. He smiled at her and bent lifting her hand and pressing his lips to the back of it. He was in spirit entirely; it never occurred to him that it might offend her as he wasn't condescending (simply adventurous, mischievous and coy) - he was simply acting on instinct. He rose and offered his arm to her while tossing the cane in his other hand into the air and catching it half way up the shaft. He pointed straight ahead with it. "Let's be on then, won't you?" He looked at her and then down to his arm. Dexter, having arrived when he did never thought that Belle was anything other than a dignitary as she was dressed in the marquis's clothes - not that it would have mattered to him either way. He was simply was behaving on instinct. "Your majesties," He peeked back at Wendell and Jasella, "friends, show me - teach me - I'm ready to learn," he looked back at Belle and told her, "this will be an experience of a lifetime. I assure you. Perhaps even an adventure." He leaned over and whispered with a twinkling smile as top hat appeared on his head. He used the end of his cane to tip it back on his head as he lifted his chin ready to take on this brave new world. |

Wendell wrinkled his nose, still quietly glowering to himself over Jasella as she disappeared into the mirror. He didn't enjoy being showed up--and she did it so perfectly that it absolutely annoyed him. Wendell reached up and smoothed out his hair before stepping in behind Tony, blinking his eyes rapidly the moment he stepped onto the grass of the park, brushing off his clothes as he gave a snort. "If you can manage to choke down that vile liquid, be my guest." Wendell said off hand, eyes flickering to Tony. A smile cross his face involuntarily at the man's words. Tony had quickly become more than just part of his faculty--he was his friend and companion. If Wendell took the moment to realize it, he would dub Tony as his best friend. It was in that moment that he was reminded of any sort of relationship at all--Tony amused him. His zeal and humbleness was something he didn't expect to enjoy but it had long ago grown on him. "Let's keep moving forward--Virigina is a server, yes? If your mother-in-law's is off limits, I imagine our first destination is her place of work." Wendell said swiftly, nodding Tony forward to lead them there in whatever way he could. Wendell shifted uncomfortably--he hated not knowing what was next nor being less knowledge about where he was. It was unfamiliar territory--for the most part--and didn't enjoy the nervous feeling in his stomach. It was only when they were in front the restaurant that Wendell opened his mouth again, eyes cutting first to Jasella. "I'd imagine offering you entrance first would only stroke your ego that much more and I can't pretend that any of us could handle that. You're not as clever as you think you are, Marquis." He said sharply, his last words said low enough that he intended for only her to hear. He turned and stepped into the restaurant, eyes focusing in on someone who seemed in charge before he stepped forward--it never occurred to him to have Tony help him. Any moment he could skirt by without help from others was the perfect moment. "Excuse me--yes, you there." Wendell stopped one of the waitresses, his eyes settling on her. "We seek Miss Virigina Lewis--would you please fetch her?" |

Jasella's eyebrows shot up on her forehead and she smiled a dangerous smile at Belle. "Next time I shall - and you'll still follow me." She challenged her friend. Though it was sport for Jasella to push the right buttons on the right people at the right time to get them to feel at the extemes of their emotional range, something Belle had long since learned how to deal with (or at least pretend to), this time she was almost actually annoyed with her friend. It might have been a side effect of Wendell's pompous attitude or the fact that she wasn't in her own kingdom challenging those she knew she had a right to. She was in a foreign land and doing her best to hold her own; the last thing she wanted was Belle against her too - but that only meant she'd fight harder, not yield. Any quip she might have back faded away as her eyes set on the city beyond as well. She briefly saw the duke seemingly vanish and disappear all around them. She wanted to reach our and grab him - he was distracting her from the amazing things beyond. When he settled on Belle she was glad for Belle to get distracted and for the duke as well - it would get them both off her radar for the time being. She followed him with a smug smile, completely bemused to see Wendell trying to lead them in an unfamiliar place. He looked only that much more foolish. It was amusing. But the second he snapped at her before turning and entering before she could even respond had a heat rising in her chest that made the tips of her ears burn. He might be handsome and well mannered in spirit - he was hardly charming and the fact that he annoyed her so only made the handsome and would-be-well-manners fall away. She followed immediately, stalking as she went. She stepped up right next to him and leaned closer to him. "No my dear king you're not as clever as you think you are." There was laughter in her tone as the waitress merely looked at Wendell in confusion; an expression Jasella could read quite well. Particularly his precise verbiage. "Allow me..." She said to him turning back to Tony. "I understand that his majesty isn't capable of improper choices or even using those disc shaped fleshy things on the sides of his head. I assume he only keeps them there for decoration not the purpose of listening. Though I heard you. Please point us to the correct restaurant she is employed at." Jasella shot Wendell a sideways glance as she trotted off behind Tony who was still standing with the door open pointing across the street. Oddly enough she exited the building while Tony held the door for her, proudly with her head held high. She merely glanced over her shoulder and issued Wendell a demeaning and coy grin half hidden behind her shoulder. |

There was a certain way that most of servants were treated, one where they were constantly reminded of where they landed in the grand scheme of things, down at the bottom of totem pole. Beneath even the commoners themselves. Most of them expected it and accepted it. It was simply part of their life. Belle, however, was not used to that treatment and whenever it was pulled on her, most of all by Jasella herself, she was left gritting her teeth and angry and hurt at being spoke to that way and she usually spent the whole next two days being the almost condescendingly perfect handmaiden that she could be. And so she bit back any more words that she might have possibly had time for, turning away from Jasella and just studying the bright lights until she felt someone right next to her and she looked over to see the Elf Duke standing next to her. Her moment's confusion towards his actions to her, or even acknowledgment of her, was quickly interrupted by another, more powerful, feeling. Annoyance. Looking up quickly towards Jasella, she lowered her eyes for a moment as she turned away, leaving Belle to deal with him on her own. For reasons that probably only Jasella knew, Belle was not fond of elves. All the characteristics that she normally wouldn't mind in other people only bothered her when accompanied by a set of wings. Begrudgingly lifting her arm, Belle placed it in with his, looking up warily towards him and silently cursing Jaz for getting her into this. "I guess we will see." She said politely as they began to follow the rest of the group. She hated adventure. It was much too stressful for her taste. She watched tensely from behind as Jasella and the King continued to squabble. This was it. There was no way they were going to get their aide at this rate. She could just feel it and though she hated being so pessimistic, all their plans seemed to be sinking right then and she could think of a million other things that would make this whole trip go over better even if those words would never see the light of day. She had learned her fair share of diplomacy from her travels, having been witness to quite a few of these meetings. Though none had turned out this awful. Wendell stood still in his spot for a moment, his jaw clenching tight as he listened to Jasella's taunt, a scowl crossing his face before it faded away. It wasn't noble or even morally acceptable to have that sort of hate written across your face. Therefore Wendell shoved it deep down, taking in a deep breath and letting it out roughly before he spun on his heels and reluctantly followed behind Jasella, to even offering the waitress behind him an apology. But no matter how much Jasella rubbed him raw, no matter how absolutely infuriating she was, he wasn't going to back down on his word. He had already promised aid from the fourth kingdom for the second and when it came to political and military action, all arrogance in Wendell was set aside. Underneath the big head and superfluous words, Wendell understood the position he was in and he took his job absolutely serious. To protect his kingdom and to protect those around him too--even if those around him were just as irritating and hot-tempered as the woman before him. "Not a word--" Wendell said, eyes snapping towards Tony as he stepped into the shop behind Jasella and let out a heavy breath as he listened to her ask for Virigina--just as he had to the woman across the street. Only this time the waitress knew who they were asking for and promised to return with Virigina in a moments time. "That doesn't prove any cleverness above my own." Wendell said as he fell into step beside Jasella, watching as the waitress disappeared towards the back of the restaurant. "I was merely checking to see if Anthony had forgotten which one it was--it has been a while since he was last here." Wendell spoke lamely as he tried his best to recover from the swift kick she had given him. He pulled lightly at his sleeves as he tipped his chin upwards. He knew he was wrong--he knew it whatever he said only dug his hole deeper but he couldn't stop himself. He couldn't loose to this woman. |

Jasella was nodding with a smug smile on her face still. It was almost a permanent fixture as she didn't bother giving him a second look she just listened. "Oh of course. Why wouldn't it have been a test? I'm positive that it was actually a test for each of us wasn't it your majesty?" She poked a little further. "I contend that my cleverness is superior if only for the fact that I listen and didn't bother trying to guide the entire team across an unfamiliar terrain when one present is intimately familiar with it. But I have no doubt we would have found it eventually had we continued on with your lead." Her eyes finally betrayed her and they trailed up to the king; however there was a heavy amount of amusement in them. "Oh," she went on with a little bit of perk in her - it was artificial but still present as she gave him a little nod, "That wasn't intended to implicate anything about your brash leadership in regards to familiar territory - it was only an observation of that which is unknown." She could still feel the fury in her chest, but now it was mingled with glee. She had to stop any further attacks on him and turn back to the waitress who was swiftly returning with a pretty little short haired girl who looked a little concerned. Their mismatched appearance in a group might be frightening to anyone but the short haired girl didn't seem to be phased by that - it was the other one who seemed to be slightly afraid of them. She peeked back up to Wendell, this time issuing her own under the breath snide remark. "The stage is yours, won't you give us another show." She leaned back and folded her arms across her chest as she looked ahead at who she could only assume was Virginia. She was uncomfortable without her sword and all the eyes on her but it had been insisted that they leave all weapons behind. Though the more she considered leaving the safety of the group in Wendell's hands the more she wished she had disregarded his decree on the matter. |

I'll have the steak, rare, with the baked potatoe and a glass of your house wine." Virginia's foot snaked up behind her leg, itching at it as she wrote down the man's order. Any moment now the hand of the clock on the wall would hit the twelve and she would be free to head out and back home and away from the nauseating fumes of the restraunt that she smiled through, at times speaking solely through her teeth when certain customers decided to take their time. "Virginia." At her name, she turned quickly, seeing one of the other waitresses standing nearby. "You have company." "Oh, okay... I'll be right back." She assured the people at the table. "Let me just handle this real quick." Backing away from the table, she turned on her toes and headed into the main area of the restraunt, stopping dead in her tracks for a moment before a wide grin crossed her face. "Dad?!" She exclaimed, her voice incredulous as if she might be seeing things, before she rushed to him, her arms out to give him a tight hug. She had known that she would see him again, that he couldn't stay away forever. "I hadn't expected you so soon, not that I'm complaining, of course." She turned at the sound of a throat clearing, the other waitress motioning back towards her table. "I'll handle them for you. You go." Mouthing her thanks, she worked at ushering them all back outside, thankful for the fresh air. "So..." She started excitedly. "How are things? And Wendell, how are you?" Her eyes settling on the rest of the group, none of whom she knew, she reached out to shake the hand of the nearest one. "Virginia Lewis." She introduced herself as she stepped back next to her father again. Edited by Virginia Lewis, Jul 11 2008, 01:40 AM.

Wolf had waited, or tried at least, until Virginia got home to see her again. Each day she went to work he followed closely behind, or at least within half her shift close behind. This time he'd made it all the way to the last hour before he thought he'd burst with anxiety. He'd marched the length of the apartment, tried to fiddle with the television, and even destroyed the kitchen by cooking his own seven course meal. It was after that in which Wolf decided he'd had enough and he was going after her - after all, he could handle dessert...another rare steak. If he had learned one thing, this world, with all it's mystery and intrigue was more complex than he'd anticipated. However, he held to the fact that it was all worth it for Virginia. His cream puff, his sausage, the apple of his eye...he had to stop himself, he could go on for hours. He bound across the park, after considering the subway - last time he'd only managed to scare the wits out of a little old lady that he issued one of his brimming smiles to and took up conversation with. The second he caught sight of her he sucked in a huge breath of excitement, it was accompanied by a gasp of glee. It didn't occur to him to notice that she was outside or surrounded by others. "My creamy little -" his words trailed off as he noted the others, finally actually seeing them. An even brighter smile befell him. "Ton!" He bound forward and hugged the man with reckless abandon. He turned immediate and grabbed up Wendell's hand shaking it before the king could protest. He proceeded to do the same to Dexter. "Hello." He was positively beaming with excitement. He scooped up Belle's hand and kissed it, it wasn't nearly romantic it was simply his bouncy greeting and appropriate for the company he figured. "It's always nice to see new faces with friends." He cheered and then turned to Jasella ready to offer the same sort of greeting. However there was a full second in which he paused. "CRIPES!" He leaped back next to Virginia and then his eyes darted back to Belle and he took in her appearance, now recognizing her too. "Oh cripes." He said a little softer this time. "An Alcott, you brought an Alcott and here." He said ducking behind Virginia before popping out from the other side of her and pointing at the girls. |

Wendell sent Jasella a scowl before he fell silent, not entirely sure he could even come up with a retort that would rival her's. She had him--she had him backed up in a corner and now she was just baring her fangs at full height, the sharp points hardly scary him. It was more annoying than frightening--he had lost. This once he had lost but that didn't mean there wouldn't be a faltering in her person and, in turn, a chance for him to escape his little corner only to back her into the very same one. Wendell watched quietly as Virigina appeared before them, a small hint of a smile crossing his own face. She had helped save his life and for it he was grateful--he was grateful for that sort of self-sacrifice and for that courage too. Tony, Wolf, and Virigina all offered him a kindness he hadn't expected to exist and it was eye opening. It showed him what it meant to help others, to understand the needs of others...of strangers, even. And although he did his best to stay as proper as he had been before, Wendell couldn't completely disregard the humbleness about him for it. He had, without his own knowledge, learned something that would no doubt lead him to a newer, maybe even better Wendell White. Not, of course, that he was entirely happy about it--a part of him was absolutely terrified of becoming anything different than he was now. "Quite well, I assure you--it is refreshing to see you, Virigina." Wendell offered with a soft bow of his head. It was as Wolf appeared that he winced slightly, never having been the biggest fan of the man. But that didn't mean he didn't respect him just as he did Tony and Virigina. A sly smile crossed his face as Wolf hid, behind Virigina, from Jasella's very presence. His eyes cut to her and the smile only grew in width. "I imagine that the Marquis means no harm--at least not now that she's seen you, Wolf. Does this satisfy you?" Wendell asked with raised eyebrows before he looked towards Wolf and took a step towards Wolf. "I promise to show you the wolf that saved my life and here you are. Right before your disbelieving eyes and very much a wolf known even to your kingdom, it seems. Would you like him to howl for you too?" Wendell scoffed softly before smiling towards Virigina and Wolf. "Forgive me, my friends--we came for a visit none too long. To prove to Marquis Alcott that a noble wolf did in fact exist--that there is a reason for the pardon at all. But wait for it...I can only imagine the newest development by the woman. I expect she'll find something wrong you that should surely make me relieve all wolves in the nine kingdoms of their freedoms." Wendell spoke as if Jasella was not standing there--as if it was simply the three of them. But he turned to look towards her a moment later. "Please--tell us what you're thinking and remove any lingering doubt--although I don't believe any exists but just in case." Wendell waved his hand forward, eyebrows still raised. |

She gave Virginia a passing glance before bowing to her, despite Wendell already launching into some dissertation in all his nobleness. She merely glanced over at him wondering silently if he ever let up – if he ever quit. More parts of his story were being validated and that didn’t please the Marquis at all. But then it happened, just as she hoped it wouldn’t. Jasella’s eyes were fixed on the wolf. Her hand had automatically reached to her sword hip – but when her hand grabbed nothing but air she scowled deeper. If she had actually had time to reflect on it she’d be furious at Wendell for being right – but in that moment she was fixed on the Wolf. “This is the wolf? The wolf?” She demanded pointing the hand that had gone to her side at him. “Impossible.” She glanced over at Belle. They knew this wolf, quite well in fact. He had been sheltered under Gretel for many moons between trouble he’d gotten into in Hood’s land. He was a relative of Hood – Jasella was certain that was the only reason Gretel had granted this particular wolf immunity. It annoyed her even more that he too had won Wendell over. What was it about this particular wolf that drew people? It infuriated her – he infuriated her. Meanwhile, there was a part of her that respected him too and that only made it all that much worse. What power did this creature have? Jasella could not understand it, particularly since he’d won part of her as well. “Don’t be foolish.” She snapped flicking her eyes to Wendell before back to Wolf. It was only then that she realized she was being shown up – she realized that Wendell was right; a wolf had saved his life. If that was truly how it occurred. It further hurt her pride that it was this wolf. She felt her nostrils flare in irritation. Even more working against her was the fact that she believed it – if only because she knew him. “Now it’s your turn to stop!” Jasella cut in. She had been annoyed by Wendell’s cutting in and using the word ‘stop’ – it was equivalent to telling her to shut up. She hated that. “First wolves are only heroes in your kingdom.” She said pointedly to Wendell. “It’s hardly the view of the entire nine kingdoms.” She shot him a scathing glower. She hated him, loated him – wanted to leap up and claw his face off. This man, this king, reached a part of her on other person ever had. It was true that Jasella was passionate to a fault, she dared not even attempt to hide it – but he was able to find a nerve no other single living person had reached. It made her more bold and brash than she normally was – it was a brazen feat true enough. “Indeed I can find faults but I hardly plan on exposing them here before your precious wolf. But it’s not you I’m concerned with at this point.” She snarled. She glanced back at Belle. She hated being caged and pinned beneath reasoning – it was with that in which she began to proverbially flail under the pressure. Seeing her friend brought some semblance of sanity as she turned back to the creature who saved the nine kingdoms. “Wolf, please hear me.” She told him. “If King White will not lift his pardon as he’s free to do.” There was a more civil tone in her voice as she addressed him specifically. “Won’t you talk to them, as a favor for me? It’s the least you can do after that last fiasco. It’s the least you can do for Queen Gretel. Please.” She said almost gently. “Convince them to at least return to salvage the land they were born upon. They might not owe their allegiance to either queen but to soil and earth itself I think they will agree to our cause. It’s my home I will not see it fall apart and it’s their land by birth if nothing more and I believe they’d rather see it in the hands of my queen or that of Hood before they’d see it raised to trolls.” |
