“Whoa hey there missy. Clearly there is somethin’ special or you wouldn’t have us. Charming lot ain’t we?” He beamed at her with a toothy grin, slipping in easily and taking the reigns from his comrades. They would ruin this if he didn’t try at least to patch up what they’d already been doing. He was trying to pay attention to the twists and turns they took; it was hard enough to do that and not wrangle the girl too. However, he also need to be at the head in case they ran into another guard he’d definitely have to do the talking on that occasion. He sighed comfortably as he saw the back of two massive spike laden doors. “Sweet victory.” He whispered. “Lookie,” he turned back to her and then looked up to Grish with the same genuine smile he used on her. He peeked briefly over at Set before reaching up and taking her by the shoulders. He leaned over so they were eye to eye. Folding up the end of his jailer coat he wiped a few of the tears that remained on her cheeks away. He wasn’t a criminal, it wasn’t in him – he simply was who he was and that got him landed in jail. He was trying to survive. He asked no questions when Grish brought him goods to sell; he sold them. The lies were only a side effect of doing what he knew for how to get by. Like Grish he was a gentle sort of soul simply cursed with the wrong type of life. Set too was a survivor – but a different breed. “Lookie Starr,” He started again. “It’s Janen, I’m Janen. That’s my name.” He answered one of her questions with another smile. “Course I think we can. You ready missy?” He asked. He pulled the door open for her and was very glad to be greeted with the warm sun and smell of flowers beyond. “Here’s what we know. The murder was premeditated. They were after somethin’ – somethin’ not even you know about. And that means trouble. It also means, if you ain’t got nothin’ to hide, you’re in even more danger than ya think because ya can’t use whatever this think is as a bargaining chip. But ya see missy,” he leaned over a little and lowered his voice to a softer pitch as he went on, “I think it might be more inherent than that – more raw…ya know? Like not just a thing if ya get my drift. It’s all speculation from here but maybe it’s in your blood…bloodline that is.” He had talked himself in a circle until he came to his own crown jewel dénouement. He nodded, this was what he did – it was Ruse and how he got his nickname. He came by it, ironically enough, honestly. |

Starr couldn't help it, she smiled. Even if there was something wrong, even if something horrible came up... This guard seemed all right. And if the others were friends with him, she could trust them too. She laughed as he spoke. Charming indeed. She looked at him. He had whispered something inaudible to her ears. She gasped as he grabbed her by the shoulders. That had been unexpected. See now had that been so hard? She wondered as she heard his answers. She gasped in fright at the word 'premeditated', she knew it, of course. But to think of her mom's situation like that hurt. "Not an object? in my...bloodline... I'm not sure I completely catch your drift," she said, nearing to the door, "because I'm not royal or anything like that..." she said. Still she had to admit it made sense. But as she remembered years ago when her mum and her had done a family tree, she realized he could be right. Her mom easily could have been hiding something. "But I could be wrong." |

Seton sighed softly, giving his head the smallest shake as he plunged his hands into the pockets of the uniform they all wore. He was a bitter man--had been a bitter child too--and everything annoyed him. When it didn't, there was still an air of annoyance around him. If only because it was so deeply ingrained into his person. There was little else that Seton understood up annoyance. And right then this entire situation annoyed him. It hadn't gone as planned and now they had to trick this girl before them into believing a plan that he was sure was the most pathetic one they could've come up with. It didn't matter to him that it was the best plan they had--the fact that it had gone wrong thus far meant it was a bad one. "Ya could be--could be some royal blood way, way back that they're after. A lady or a duke that ya didn't have a clue about. Or maybe it is a thing--a heirloom, if you will. Maybe they're after something ya got that didn't know ya had." Seton offered in a gruff voice--in truth, he wasn't even sure why it had happened. He knew who did it but that was a different story. And he was more than willing to fuel Ruse's circle of false speculation if it meant she was satisfied with their answers. It was just then, however, that he was pulled roughly away from their little path. Seton didn't have the chance to shout out to Grish or Ruse before he disappeared behind them. |
