She gave Virginia a passing glance before bowing to her, despite Wendell already launching into some dissertation in all his nobleness. She merely glanced over at him wondering silently if he ever let up – if he ever quit. More parts of his story were being validated and that didn’t please the Marquis at all. But then it happened, just as she hoped it wouldn’t. Jasella’s eyes were fixed on the wolf. Her hand had automatically reached to her sword hip – but when her hand grabbed nothing but air she scowled deeper. If she had actually had time to reflect on it she’d be furious at Wendell for being right – but in that moment she was fixed on the Wolf. “This is the wolf? The wolf?” She demanded pointing the hand that had gone to her side at him. “Impossible.” She glanced over at Belle. They knew this wolf, quite well in fact. He had been sheltered under Gretel for many moons between trouble he’d gotten into in Hood’s land. He was a relative of Hood – Jasella was certain that was the only reason Gretel had granted this particular wolf immunity. It annoyed her even more that he too had won Wendell over. What was it about this particular wolf that drew people? It infuriated her – he infuriated her. Meanwhile, there was a part of her that respected him too and that only made it all that much worse. What power did this creature have? Jasella could not understand it, particularly since he’d won part of her as well. “Don’t be foolish.” She snapped flicking her eyes to Wendell before back to Wolf. It was only then that she realized she was being shown up – she realized that Wendell was right; a wolf had saved his life. If that was truly how it occurred. It further hurt her pride that it was this wolf. She felt her nostrils flare in irritation. Even more working against her was the fact that she believed it – if only because she knew him. “Now it’s your turn to stop!” Jasella cut in. She had been annoyed by Wendell’s cutting in and using the word ‘stop’ – it was equivalent to telling her to shut up. She hated that. “First wolves are only heroes in your kingdom.” She said pointedly to Wendell. “It’s hardly the view of the entire nine kingdoms.” She shot him a scathing glower. She hated him, loated him – wanted to leap up and claw his face off. This man, this king, reached a part of her on other person ever had. It was true that Jasella was passionate to a fault, she dared not even attempt to hide it – but he was able to find a nerve no other single living person had reached. It made her more bold and brash than she normally was – it was a brazen feat true enough. “Indeed I can find faults but I hardly plan on exposing them here before your precious wolf. But it’s not you I’m concerned with at this point.” She snarled. She glanced back at Belle. She hated being caged and pinned beneath reasoning – it was with that in which she began to proverbially flail under the pressure. Seeing her friend brought some semblance of sanity as she turned back to the creature who saved the nine kingdoms. “Wolf, please hear me.” She told him. “If King White will not lift his pardon as he’s free to do.” There was a more civil tone in her voice as she addressed him specifically. “Won’t you talk to them, as a favor for me? It’s the least you can do after that last fiasco. It’s the least you can do for Queen Gretel. Please.” She said almost gently. “Convince them to at least return to salvage the land they were born upon. They might not owe their allegiance to either queen but to soil and earth itself I think they will agree to our cause. It’s my home I will not see it fall apart and it’s their land by birth if nothing more and I believe they’d rather see it in the hands of my queen or that of Hood before they’d see it raised to trolls.” |
