Kampě – Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch’entrate. –Dante
Prejudice – “We are men of action. Lies do not become us.” –The Princess Bride

Dangling from his mother’s jaws, Judis watched the land race by below them. Everything was gray and shapeless in the pre-dawn light. The mountains were a deep shadow on the land ahead. Directly below, sudden black blots of forests, rocks, and canyons broke the grayness. Judis watched in fascination. The soft whoosh of his mother’s wings was relaxing. Judis knew nothing could harm him while they flew. Lulled by the rushing of the air, Judis closed his eyes and dozed.

This was the last one. Kampě had left her gray-green daughter in a likely spot the day before. She’d gone back to check on Harlequin before she picked up Prejudice. She’d been looking for a place to leave him for hours, but she felt a vague uneasiness about every place she chose. She finally realized that it wasn’t the places; it was her. She didn’t want to leave her little Prejudice. He was special to her. But she couldn’t take him with her, not where she was going. She was flying loosely in the direction of Shadow Clan, her final destination. Taking Judis there would be a terrible mistake.

She passed over a forest of tall trees, black in the pre-dawn shadows. She saw a large clearing in its center. On impulse, she tucked in her wings and glided down. The place seemed to be unclaimed. Kampě landed in the clearing. Rocks loomed up like ancient ruins around her. The jostle of landing stirred Judis awake. He looked around at the strange place they’d come to. Kampě set him down.

Her mind was made up. The border of Shadow Clan was only a few minutes’ flight from here. Prejudice would be safe here for a while. As soon as her business was finished, Kampě would be back for him. He wouldn’t be alone for more than a few hours. The possibility that she might not be coming back didn’t occur to her.

She nuzzled Judis gently, as she’d reassured her other three pups when she left them. “Judis, do you see those bushes beside that rock? I want you to crawl under the rock and stay there until I return.”

He looked up at her uncertainly. “Where are you going?”

Kampě sighed. With Harlequin or her daughter, she would’ve said “Don’t argue” and left. But Prejudice would know someday how it felt to be shunned and hated by the world because of his wings. Kampě was doing this for his future as much as her own personal vendetta. He deserved to know. “I’m going to Shadow Clan—that way. There are two wolves with wings there, but not like ours. They’re feathered and fluffy like birds’ wings. It makes them think they’re better than us. I have to go and take care of them now so they won’t hurt us ever.”

“Why would they try to hurt us?” Judis asked.

Kampě drew him close to her with her paw. “They’re the only ones who can fight us in the air, Judis. They’re a threat to us, and we’re a threat to them. They hate and fear us because we’re not like them. They will never accept us. If I left them alone, someday they might hurt you.”

He searched her face with uneasy eyes. “But why?”

“Because they’re different from us, Judis.”

“Quin and sis are different from us. You don’t hate them, do you?”

Kampě snorted. I don’t hate anyone. It’s them who hate us. You and I have a great gift, Judis, but wolves without wings and these feathered ones don’t understand it. Creatures fear what they don’t understand. Fear becomes hate. I’ve been feared and hated all my life, my son. Someday they will hate you too. They’ll hurt you if you give them the chance. Don’t ever give them the chance, Judis. Strike first. That’s why I’m going to Shadow Clan, to make sure they’ll never have a chance to harm us.”

He looked confused. “But what if they weren’t going to?”

Kampě raised her eyebrows, surprised. After a moment, she chuckled. She lowered her head, nibbling playfully on the fur behind Judis’s ears. “They can’t help it, my love. Everyone has a little prejudice. I have mine too, Prejudice, my little prejudice.”

Her kisses tickled, and Judis smiled. He twisted his head around and licked Kampě’s nose. Smiling, Kampě gently pushed him into the bushes where he would be hidden. Judis crawled backward in the crevice beneath the rocks. He was completely surrounded, and the bushes screened him in front.

“Goodbye, Judis.” Kampě unfurled her wings. Judis watched through the screen of bushes as she beat her black wings and rose above the treetops. She disappeared into the lightening dawn sky.

(Kampě leaves. Thread is open after this point.)

-Aramis Antioch-

Aramis retreated from Shadowclan and headed back toward the Glacier Mountains. He'd done what he had promised. He brought Lament Antioch back to her father but he knew she would never stay. The rogue life had taken her but could she really be blamed? If parents came in a different flavor every month then Aramis himself would've done exactly what she had. Plus her friends were back there. When Lament returned he'd make sure to let her know that he would help in any way he could.

The large brute paused for a moment panting and he gazed into the Tall Fortress. It wasn't his favorite place. To a wolf used to living with the sky right above him the forest made him almost claustrophobic. But the thought of his mate and children waiting at home brightened his mood considerably. "Oh tip toe, through the tulips, through the tulips, won't cha come along and tip toe, through the tulips with me, ba bah ba da." He carried along, humming to himself, prancing in on odd little swagger.

Up ahead a rock stood out with a little patch of sun spearing through the trees, warming it. Lady Nature was taking good care of him today it seemed. He leapt up onto the rock and laid down, sunning himself. Aramis sniffed the air for a moment and his fur stood up. Something had been here a little while before...a wolf? He sniffed the ground following where the scent was strongest...and stuck his head right in the bushes.

ooc:feel free to smack him if you so desire. XD

Prejudice – “We are men of action. Lies do not become us.” –The Princess Bride

Judis lay with his eyes closed, listening to the hum of insects and scrambling of small animals in the forest. He hadn’t been alone long when suddenly the strangest noise cut through the normal noises of the forest. Judis’s eyes flew open. Through the screen of bushes he saw a wolf padding across the clearing—coming straight toward him.

What was it doing, singing? What had his mother told him about wingless wolves? Here was one, coming to get him just like she’d said. Judis’s hackles rose. He fought the urge to cry for his mother. By now she was probably too far away to hear him. Instead, he lay perfectly still. If he didn’t move, maybe the thing would just go away. That hope was shattered as the male jumped up on the rocks right over Judis’s head.

Judis’s body stiffened. He was ready to spring in an instant if the wingless thing jumped down on top of him. But the wolf didn’t seem to have noticed him yet. He held very still. Maybe it would still just go away… It jumped down. He heard it snuffling toward him. The male’s shape came right up to the bushes where Judis hid. He stuck his head right in.

Judis hissed like a teakettle. He launched himself at the brute’s face. He aimed to clamp his tiny jaws down right on the soft, fleshy end of the monster’s nose.

ooc: Not sure what to say...any direction you'd like this to go? Hope more folks join in...
ic:

Aramis started to back off at the hissing but he wasn't fast enough. Sharp little teeth nipped his nose and Aramis stumbled back in shock, surprsed at the little beast's gumption. "Ow...oh..." He wriggled his nose and licked at it with his tongue, scratches laced it and the sting made his eyes water. He gazed down at his attacker and his shock only grew. A greenish-gray wolf pup with wings and sharp yellow eyes was staring up at him. What in the world...

Aramis took a few steps back. He wasn't sure what to do or say and he was nervous that the mother might be nearby. He couldn't begin to imagine what sort of creature she was. Still, his curiosity got the better of him. He stayed a good five feet from the spitting creature and kept to his feet. Aramis wriggled his nose. "That's...uh...quite a bite you got there little guy. What are you doing up here all alone? Oh, manners! My name's Aramis by the way...you got a name?" He was half-tempted to ask the creature what it was but he decided that knowing it's name would be a better leading question.

ooc: I don't know. I was thinking Pyralis and the orphans, or WC. Maybe Aramis could try to take him back to Glacier mountains, b/c Kampě is going to be delayed. Unless you want her to show up, lol.

Prejudice – “We are men of action. Lies do not become us.” –The Princess Bride

Judis wriggled backward between the rocks again. He coiled his body for another spring. The rocks protected him on either side, so the male could only come at him from the front. He wouldn’t be able to drag Judis out from between the rocks easily. If he stuck his face down here again, Judis was ready to fight him. He made himself as intimidating as possible. His yellow eyes were locked on his enemy. His hackles stood up in a fluffy orange ridge down his spine. He kept up a continuous low rumble between bared teeth.

The wingless creature spoke kindly to him. Judis wasn’t fooled. The pleasantries could only be an attempt to put him off his guard. He'd never met anyone outside his family, after all, nor any adults at all besides his mother. Four-limbs couldn't be trusted, besides. He continued his ferocious puppy-growl the whole time Aramis was speaking, hardly stopping to breathe. His taut body swayed from side to side like a snake about to strike. He didn’t look like a cute, cuddly wolf pup. He looked like a mindless wild animal. His body language cried, Go away, go away! And just you wait till my mother comes back…

Harper Kravir

Caelum.

Harper's face scrunched up as she sniffed the air. Something smelled definitely foul. There was a hint of darkness in the smell, like rotting meat or something along those lines. The smell was in the air, and in her nostrils. She nearly gagged, but swallowed hard instead. She was in Caelum on no official business as of late. Rather, she was trying to figure out where that brother of hers had gone to. She was not unaware of his mating with Melrose - but she wasn't exactly certain that they had children in Caelum. Either way, she was going to find out. She'd followed a few trails so far, but they all eventually went cold. All she knew for certain was that they weren't in Willow Valley, which somewhat surprised her. She had checked ThunderClan, which was now FireClan, evidently, but their scents were old. They had been there, but it hadn't been recently. She figured that Melrose, because she was a Cavallet, had gone back to ThunderClan to give birth. That was where almost all of the Cavallets eventually ended up, just like the Kravirs always somehow ended up in Willow Valley. It was like gravity. Just like what pulled Harper to the dark smell in the air.

A loud screeching sound followed by a low hiss and series of growls alerted Harper instantly. The sounds were unlike anything she'd ever heard before, and she approached a large male that seemed to be having a hell of a time calming down a strange, winged pup cautiously. Harper's first thought was that this male was harassing the young pup. It was easy to think that, she figured, because of all of the hissing and yelling the small winged creature was doing. Harper released a low growl, ears pressed back against her skull. A long, jagged scar had been etched over her left eye stood out in stark contrast to her sunkissed golden coat. Her black and teal eyes were narrowed as she stalked forward, holding herself tall. "What's going on here?" she demanded, looking from the brute to the brute-pup. She didn't expect a straight answer, but she at least wanted to know that this random brute wasn't trying to kidnap an innocent pup.

The small pup scrambled back towards it's hiding place, frizzed and ready to attack yet again. Apparently Aramis' words weren't enough to comfort the little creature. Not that Aramis could blame him. What to do with the creature? He almost wanted to take it back with him but the mother would return eventually...right? Still...bears had been sighted in the area and they loved to chew on wolf pups. It'd be safer to take the boy back to a back. A lone wolf didn't stand much of a chance against such a creature. Besides, he could always come back to find the mother, or she could just follow his scent....at the same time though, did he really want to mess with such a creature? Let alone wait for the mother? "Uh...it's dangerous to stay here...you're mom'll be back soon, right?"

Suddenly Aramis jumped as he heard the sounds of an approaching fae. The moth...no, not the mother. They didn't look very much alike. The gold was close to the orange but the build wasn't similar. His ears went back at her harshness. Better be careful, maybe she was the mother. "I'm sorry miss. I found your pup and was simply worried. Bears usually stay in the mountains near Windclan but they've been more and more common in the Tall Fortress and nearby areas. Just though you should know. I'll uh...leave you alone." He turned, ready to take his leave, hoping the fae would take his advice.

Prejudice – “We are men of action. Lies do not become us.” –The Princess Bride

Judis pressed himself farther back between the rocks when the female appeared. He couldn’t fight off two of them. Between them, they could drag him out and eat him. Judis’s teeth were still bared, but his snarls faded away to nothing in sudden fear. He felt very small and alone. Where was his mother?

He listened to what the two wolves said, though. Some instinct of young children recognized that the fae was suspicious and the brute was giving ground. Like a typical child, he latched onto that tension subconsciously as the opportunity to cause trouble and maybe get the fae on his side. He was naturally drawn to the fae more than the brute; he was young enough to still need a mother’s constant presence, and his instincts recognized her as a potential mother. The only adult he’d ever been around was a female, besides. Her presence was far more comforting than Aramis’s. Her sheer beauty drew him, too. Even the scar on her face was acceptable. Kampě’s appearance was more terrible than that, yet she was his source of love and protection. The strange fae’s fierceness made her seem even more right to him.

His cunning little mind knew just what to do. When Aramis turned to look at the femme, he was distracted from Judis for a moment. Judis darted out of his hiding place in a flash. He tried to bite Aramis’s nearest paw. “He’s killing me!” he screamed. He flitted back between the rocks again. That ought to bring the fae to his aid—and hasten the male’s retreat.

Harper Kravir

Harper watched the male and young pup with interested black and teal eyes. She immediately noticed that the male was doing no harm to the pup by the way he acted toward her. It surprised Harper than the male assumed that she was the winged pup's mother. Harper raised one eyebrow slightly at the male when he cautioned against bears. "Well, duh", she wanted to say, but the presence of the pup made her bite her tongue. No need for sarcasm in front of a pup. Yet, Harper couldn't help it. "Really?" she asked, her eyes wide and innocent. Behind them, however, was a spark of laughter. Sarcasm was an everyday part of Harper's life, and had been since she was a mere pup. How else would she have ever survived having an older brother like Leroy? Harper inwardly cringed. She looked at the pup who seemed to be trying to take advantage distracted male's less-than-attentive gaze. Harper said nothing when the young winged creature shot from his hiding place, proceeded to attempt to bite the male on the paw, then went back into the rocks.

"Anyway, thanks for... watching him," Harper said awkwardly to the brute. The male seemed like nothing special to the ever-beautiful Harper Kravir, so she disregarded him completely. Harper sauntered over to where the young pup had wedged himself between a few rocks and peered at him, eyes narrowed. She was not his mother, but she saw no harm in letting this brute believe that she was. If anything, it would get him to leave faster. "Thanks for the warning, too," she said as politely as she possibly could. She almost smiled, too. It came out as more of a sneer, but whatever worked. Harper turned her eyes away from the brute and then looked back at the small male pup, tilting her head to one side. "Come out of there," Harper said firmly, stepping away from the rocks. She would wait until after the brute left before asking the pup any questions about who he might be. Better to let this brute believe that she was this pup's mother. Though Harper had never taken a mate or had children of her own, she still was a female, therefore she had that nasty maternal instinct that always had a way of popping up when pups were around. Harper sighed softly and hoped the male would leave. She didn't want to many questions to be formed in her wake.
