I'm sure many of us have seen this picture before

So it got me thinking, many cartoons are in a way controversial. Espically alot of shows from Japan, where anything goes.
But even look at shows like family guy, and the simpsons. I've seen the simpsons get away with mocking gays, and so much more. While family guy speaks for itself really.
But these show do get away with it. Heck, even spongebob has had some controversial arguements.

So heres the question, could sega come out with a game or new TV show that did push the boundaries of whats polically correct, or would they end up facing heavy compliants.

Oh yes I remember that, maybe a more controversial series aimed at adults would be nice...maybe not porno wise but a series where instead of getting blasted at by a robot laser they won't say "Oh fiddles naughty Eggman is causing trouble again"

Just no we need a more real reaction, something like what an adult would really say, you know tell him to fuck off or something like that.

Funnily enough, I think there's already quite a bit of material in the series already that could be easily related to current debates and issues: Eggman's high energy usage, materialism, and pollution (global warming), the entire Project Shadow debacle (human genome, cloning, playing God, etc.), Iblis (the Islamic devil, religion), GUN (wrongful war), and a host of other material.

The problem is, while I believe it could be done to some degree because the franchise is so ripe with potential, I don't think anyone would pay attention to it. Ignoring the fact that Sega are so damn scared and conservative with the emotional depth of Sonic now that it's insulting (ShtH and Sonic '06 are probably their limit,) the series has a noticeable stigma of kid-friendliness attached to it. That's probably why no one can take the more epic and darker story lines of the franchise as seriously as they're presented anymore.

Yeah, I think certainly Shadow had a push at what can be accepted. But I don't think because of cloning and GUN type things. I think it was mainly that the once furry and friendly franchise, now had a rather dark and sinister looking character at the front holding a gun.

But while there has been those moments, such as the finger inncident, Shadow with guns, tails yelling go to hell and probaly a few more. Theres never really been a serious debate raised over any of it. Which leads me to question, if they did add the odd, "go to hell", would people stand up and take any real notice.

See, it was because of the darker tones that I enjoyed Shadow. Sure, looking back they could have done a better job of it but whilst the game lasted, it was a good journey ^^

More grown-up hedgehog fun, please.

@ Master: I share your sentiments. There was huge storyline and atmospheric potential in Shadow and Sonic '06, as there was in other areas of those games. XP But maybe Sonic Unleashed will throw us a curve ball.
XP That's what I meant: that the series is seen as too kid-friendly for any of the actual serious and possibly controversial aspects of it to be taken notice of by the media, and as we've seen with Shadow and Sonic '06, any "controversial" matter is not going to incite real controversy so much as it is unbridled and melodramatic hate.

Anyways, I think the only real way for this scenario to happen would be to give a major game a serious rehaul, and I mean a GTA4 rehaul with a realistic backdrop, rampant violence, more natural dialogue and great vulgarity. Not only that, but the game would have to be advertised to high heaven. I was surprised when ol' Jack Thompson didn't jump on Sega for Shadow; he didn't even make an utterance of the game's existence. For them to get that kind of attention, Sega would actually have to pursue it.

Destruction is tempting
I havent much said in this. But i have always seen Sonic as more like an adult show then kid show. I dont know the right reason to add something like that. It's just me. But nevertheless. I have never seen that image before. Yet i heard the comics have taken one step further away from children. It's just me, but i dont have much clue.
