It's autumn. Crisp red and orange leaves are fluttering to the darkened Earth, and the air is chilling in anticipation of winter to step onto our doorsteps. A special time of the year is approaching. Black cats stalk through the empty wind-whipped streets and evil-faced jack'o'lanterns are eerily lit outsides homes in the countryside. Children and adults of all ages clamber for spooky stories, horror books, and scary movies are high demand to quench their Halloween craze. Not only do people want to see a horrifying scene with a ghost or monster but do they want to munch on candy and sugar to satisfy their sweet-tooth. All aside, it will be Halloween before we know it! So, in honor of this event we are going to ask the members of The Magical Leaf to write their own short story to practice a fresh new topic. Halloween may seem a bit childish to write about, but it's really not. You can do all kinds of interesting things with a Halloween theme. You can talk about ghosts, monsters, experiences in your life, or something that scares you and you're the main character - and you can put all kinds of scary characters in it. The story can even be a comedy or something more gruesome, as long as it has some element of Halloween included. Also, you may do poems. But how are we going to do this Halloween Story Contest? The members of TML will choose which story is best. That's right - the staff aren't going to judge it; it will be purely voiced by the people who you see every day on TML. The members may only start voting after January 1st when all of the entries are due, but they are not to post on this board. They will PM a staff member with their entries for people (Sarah, Zelda, Sarin, Kodii). Members cannot vote for themselves, but each voter gets two chances to vote for two different pieces. All votes will be posted here later, and the ones with the most will win. More will be discussed about this later. Brief background of Halloween from Wikipedia.

Ooh, up to three entries? I need to get writing then! >=D Author of Story: Me. Sarin. o.o Title of Story: Fiends of Fools Rating for Story: Do you mean PG, PG-13, etc, or something completely different? o.o Well, if it's that, then probably PG Genres of Story: Horror (or my attempt at it >>) List of Characters Used: Anne and Mark. Oh, and Mysterious Person Whose Identity Shall Not Be Revealed. It's such a short story, there's not much to say about them. Brief Synopsis: Anne's first night working as a security guard (not her choice job, but she needed the work) does not go as planned. I'm not going to spoil the ending, so hurry up and start reading! ;D Anything else: This is actually a story I did for school a couple weeks ago, but I thought it fit. The assignment was the write a horror story in one page, hence the shortness. I also did not feel like editing it, so enjoy the first and final draft. ^^; Story/Poem: Fiends of Fools Anne’s will to stand had struggled as long as it could; her legs folded under her and left her kneeling on the hard ground. It was all she could do to calm herself, to control her breaths that she insisted weren’t sobs, to pull herself to her feet again. She could not allow herself to fear, or she’d never hear the end of it. “I can’t,” she had said, talking to Mark. “I’m working tonight. I got a job as a security guard at the school.” “You’re kidding.” She had hated the way he said it, as if he couldn’t be wrong, as if he were fighting as hard as he could to contain laughter. He made a big show of checking the back of his shirt, that bright blue, ridiculous shirt he loved so much, as if to check if she had stuck something on him when he wasn’t looking. “April fools, right?” She had protested, and he had smiled at her gently and patted her shoulder as if she were a child, and then to add insult to injury he had said with a tone of finality: “Anne, you’re not a security guard. You’re just not cut out for that sort of thing.” So she had been resolved to prove him wrong, and she had almost been hoping there might be an intruder on her first night, so she could play the hero. She had counseled herself on the drive over, building up her nerve, telling herself she hadn’t been afraid of the dark since she was a child and that it was a very safe neighborhood anyway and that the police station was pretty close to the school, after all. But she hadn’t counted on the writing. The first message had been on the door, a dripping red scrawl that seemed to glow in her flashlight’s beam. ‘Welcome to our new guard,’ it had said. Harmless. Some bored teenager’s idea, no doubt. It had sent shivers up her spine. Every dark corner seemed to hold a hint of red, drawing her eyes to that next message. Every splash of starlight seemed to hold the shadowed form of the specter who was writing for her – she knew someone was there, writing for her. She had turned around once at the sound of a soft footstep, and a previously blank wall had become his canvas. And that was when her legs had given out. She pulled herself to her feet and began to stumble forwards when she heard the footsteps again. They were behind her now, echoing up the stairwell she had just passed. She froze, unable to move away, too terrified to turn and see the owner of the footsteps. Her heartbeat seemed as loud as thunder, but it was somehow not loud enough to cover the quiet laughter that surrounded her, the laughter that informed her that her companion was now just behind her. She could feel him leaning close to her, his head an inch away from her own. “Boo.” She whirled around and swung her flashlight with all her might, ignoring the jolt in her arm when it struck something hard. Tears rushed from her eyes and she beat out in front of her until she realized she was striking only air, until she heard the sound of the body tumbling down the stairs. She stood still until all was silent but for the sounds of her sobbing. The beam of the flashlight, flickering for protest of its misuse, wandered down the stairs. In its faint beam she could just barely make out the body, the bright blue sleeve of its shirt twisted against the wall just under the final message. ‘April fools.’ |
