Strathim's Traveling Marvels.

The very mention of the name sent shivers of excitement up one's spine. It was, after all, the most realistic, dangerous, and marvelous circus of the era.

There were all the traditional 'freaks' in this circus; the Bearded Woman, the two-headed llama, the Siamese Twins, the Halfman, the Fat Lady, various Tiny People, people with animal qualities, incredibly strong men and women, 'mythical' creatures, and those who could contort their bodies into impossible shapes, as well as other unique people and animals.
The typical acts were also there; fire-eating/breathing/dancing, acrobatics, gymnastics, stilts, juggling, equilibristics, clowns, human cannonball, knife-throwing, magic tricks, sword-swallowing, and animal acts.

But what set this particular circus apart from other acts was the side none but a select few ever saw. The circus that opened at night.

Some say it is evil. Others, cursed.

But really, it's all just in good, bloody, fun.

The entire place even looks different for the Night Show. During the day it looks harmless enough, with the brightly colored tents, gaudy costumes, and smiling faces. For the night show, however, it's the very opposite. Black and purple or green striped silk marks the tents, and dark colors certainly take over the place, the gothic style and almost Halloweenish feel giving one goosebumps of fear, or excitement, or both.

Those who live and work the circus seem to change accordingly, the darker side of their personalities taking center stage. The acts are more daring, the animals more dangerous, the chance that something terrible might happen exponentially greater.

The setting of this roleplay takes place within the circus itself; it will be staying in a particular spot for a few weeks, an open field at a crossroads between several cities. The world it takes place in is very similar to our own, with the exception of mythical creatures being real.

Magic, my friends, is not a silly child’s tale. Though rare it may be, it does exist.

How fortunate for the circus that it’s people are, or many of them at least, magical, and that it’s mythical creatures and monsters are, in fact, real.

Though of course, in certain cases this poses a problem. Werewolves cannot exactly be trusted around a full moon. Vampires, as we all know, are prone to making meals of the innocent customers. Beasts of magical nature may kill a patron or two, if they get too close. Not to mention the accidents that happen during the acts themselves…

But that’s what makes this circus so tantalizing. The thrill of danger, even death, awaits behind those iron gates, the dark silk curtains. Rumors abound over the disappearances, the bodies found during the time of their stay. The authorities wave it all off as sad coincidences, for the circus could not be tied to any of the deaths or disappearances; after all, there was never any evidence they had anything to do with them; everyone visits the circus, and it’s a perfect opportunity for thugs to attack victims or murderers to commit crimes- not to mention all the wild animals drawn out by the scents of food…

The time is nightfall. A few hours ago the Day Show ended, and the circus is preparing for its specialty. In about half an hour, the Night Show will open, and the first acts and exhibits will ensue.

Circus freaks, animals, acts, and patrons are welcome.

It was nearly time.

Vale was about dancing with excitement, glee shooting through his veins and whuffing out in every breath he took. He shook out his mane, trying to rid himself of the excessive anxiety. It’s not like he hadn’t done this before. He opened the show many times before, but for some reason… It was as if something was brewing. Something exciting. Dangerous.

Well, that was nothing new; every night they performed something exciting and dangerous happened. He sighed, forcing himself to relax as he glanced about his tent. He wasn’t what most people imagined the apprentice Ringmaster or magician to be; in fact, he wasn’t even human. Had he lacked the nearly 18 inch black and white spiraled horn protruding from his brow, he could’ve been taken for a handsome bay paint horse of the light draft variety. Of course, he was much more than that; the stallion was a noble specimen of his kind indeed. His rich coat gleamed, the colors holding a hidden depth to them that a simple horse- no matter what breeding or how well-groomed- could never obtain. His long, thick mane and tail shared the black and white theme of his horn, his cloven hooves all black save for the striped one of his white leg. He wasn’t vain, be he knew well how attractive he was.

He took one last look in the full-length mirror standing to the side, startlingly green eyes flashing with mischief. Suddenly his visage shimmered, and, like smoke moved by a breeze, his form changed. Now, instead of a 16 hand high, patchwork-colored equine he was a tall, dark-haired young man. Thick, dark lashes framed his now almost glowing eyes, fair skin making the dark makeup he wore for the show stand out more. Black ringed his eyes, sharp lines striking downward adding a unique flair. He wore a black velvet ringmaster’s suit over a shock of scarlet silk, shiny black shoes, and a lopsided top hat. Smirking, he pulled on the matching scarlet gloves as he hummed a favorite tune, then took up his black baton and tucked it under his arm, spinning around on one foot to begin the short walk to the back of the show tent.

The show would be wonderful, as always. His part, the largest and most as expansive of them all, encompassed his own acts, as well as boosting all of the others.

Another night, another round of fun. He couldn’t wait for the show to begin…

xD Well, I suppose what's needed are freaks, performers, animals, and people to come watch the show. ;)

A Ringmaster would be fine, but he'd have to know Vale pretty well seeing as he raised him. xDDD Which would be fine, I could just put backstory into my posts. ^^

Multiple characters is a-ok. In fact, it's great. 8D

Sweet action!
(:
The guy I have in mind can either be Ringmaster or a guy who can provide nasty competition for it and be an antagonist. :0
And the girl is just a freak/preformer.

I can provide random spectators too if we need someone to watch, lol

"Of all the boys I've known and I've known some
Until I first met you I was lonesome
And when you came in sight, dear my heart grew light
And this ol' world seemed new to me...
"

The harmonic harlequins of the 1930's voices echoed out of the brass horn of an antique phonograph, perched snuggly upon an organized record tower. Polyvinyl plates peeked from their packages in hope of being the next sung song. As the Andrews Sisters carried on in accompaniment with brass instruments, a pair of lips were mouthing the lyrics as they indulged in a coating of bright red paint. A stick of scarlet traced their delicate outline at the discretion of the thin, pale hand holding the golden tube. These elongated, porcelain fingers gently set aside the lipstick and picked up a rusty tin of rouge and began to powder pale cheeks.

You're really swell, I have to admit, you
Deserve expressions that really fit you
And so I've wracked my brain, hoping to explain
All the things that you do to me.

A trumpet sounded before the sisters were swept into the chorus, allowing Veronika to glance at her reflection in the dusty, brandished mirror of her vanity. Her freshly primed lips stretched into a grin, despite the great contrast between the brilliant red and pale skin, she was still the pretty little angel her father always said she was. His words of praise resonated within her ten years after his noble death at the snowy hands of her home country. ‘It was the will of Mother Russian,’ Veronika thought as she pulled dark lace gloves over her elegant hands, ‘A fitting punishment for a filthy pedophile.’

The record began to skip, repeatedly singing the same word musically before an ear-wrenching scrape of the vinyl. Sighing, Veronika walked the ten foot length of her trailer to the phonograph in order to place the needle back on its track. The song resumed as she returned to the mirror, her steely blue eyes fixing upon her figure to scrutinize every inch. Thick, ebony bangs hung above her eyes, framing her face in a dark outline of pin straight hair that fell past her shoulders. Her voluptuous frame fit perfectly into the red, polka dotted performing dress she had since her first time performing. There were still scorch marks tattering the lace ruffles and spatters of blood on the netting.

Veronika reached behind her back to lace up the corset, making sure that her curves were secured in place. The graceful way her fingers weaved the ribbon up her back gave her something more to smile about. She adored the way her hands worked so subtly, whether it was sewing lace or slitting a pig’s throat, they always seemed so majestic. With a pluck of her fishnets, she adorned her mini top hat and adjusted the black veil sprouting from it. She couldn’t have been more please with how professional and elegant she appeared.

“Slutty…” Veronika mused, remembering the words so many of her co-workers had said about her outfits. Their jealousy seeped through every stare and word they breathed to her. But it was good for business, and that’s what she was all about. Why else would she be the Ringmaster’s right hand gal? While he was busy tending to his protégé, SHE was the one behind every act and every performer. When someone needed a way to please the crowd, she gave it to them or did it herself. Veronika was so invested in her work as a performer that it was almost obsessive, almost to the point where her previous passions reared their deadly heads.

Show tent lights poured through the trailer windows and a loud rapping tore through the songs of the phonograph. “Madame, are you in there? We’re all heading to the tent to see Vale open the show. You should hurry up!”

Veronika scooped up her black, lacquered cane and ran her fingertips over the silver cross she wore around her neck. With one last look in the mirror, she smiled as she left, singing the lyrics that echoed throughout the trailer;

“It means you’re the fairest in the la-a-a-and…”
