It is 2312 AD. Four years ago, the combined forces of the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations, the Advanced European Union, and Human Reform League attacked and destroyed the paramilitary organization known as Celestial Being and their superweapons, the mobile suits known as Gundams. With this act, the majority of the world was united into one unified nation, the Earth Federation of United Nations, or the Federation for short. For two years, the world had a peace that it had not seen for centuries.

However, the Federation took up the task left behind by Celestial Being: to unite the world completely, and put an end to conflict with force. Two years after its creation, the Federation launched a massive attack into the heart of the nations outside its influence. With all the military might of three superpowers behind it, the Federation quickly began to spread its influence all over the world. Any country that resisted Federation was quickly beaten into submission. Conquered countries that proved too rebellious were denied basic necessities for life and, more importantly, access to the solar energy grid that provided power to the planet.
