[SET] name: Choice Band move 1: Ice Shard move 2: Earthquake move 3: Rock Slide move 4: Body Slam / Return / Blizzard item: Choice Band ability: Snow Cloak evs: 196 Atk / 196 Spe / 116 HP nature: Jolly / Lonely [SET COMMENTS]
This is probably the best thing Swinub can do. You're going to be using Ice Shard most of the time, and with it, Swinub becomes a good revenge killer for Gligars and other Pokemon weak to ice. Earthquake is his secondary STAB and his strongest attack, and completes the Ice/Ground combo with is one of the best. Rock Slide is there for coverage and for possible flinch-hax. Body Slam has a chance for paralysis, something Swinub values very much because of his average speed, but Return is more powerful. Blizzard doesn't get the boost for your Choice Band, but it does offer a much stronger STAB, but should only be used if you plan to have Hail support.
[SET] name: Choice Specs move 1: Blizzard / Ice Beam move 2: AncientPower move 3: Hidden Power Fire move 4: Mud Bomb item: Choice Specs evs: 196 SpA / 196 Spe / 116 HP nature: Modest [SET COMMENTS]
Though his Special Attack stat is lower than his Attack, he does gain a couple of things. You'll probably want to use Blizzard, as Swinub needs all the power he can get, but if you won't have Hail up and are worried about about accuracy, use Ice Beam. AncientPower is Swinub next best option, and has a chance of boosting all you stats, which Swinub likes very much. Hidden Power Fire kills Bronzor, who otherwise walls Swinub completely. Mud Bomb is STAB, but it's pretty and is essentially filler.
[SET] name: CurseNub move 1: Curse move 2: Ice Shard move 3: Earthquake move 4: Rock Slide / Return / Body Slam item: Focus Sash / Life Orb evs: 196 Atk / 196 Spd / 116 HP nature: Adamant [SET COMMENTS]
Curse is Swinub's only means of boosting his attacks, and paired with Ice Shard, the Speed Drop is essentially negated. Earthquake offers powerful STAB. Rock Slide can give you fliches, but Return and Body Slam both give accuracy and more power. Return is preferable here because of the power and the fact that if you do Curse up, Body Slam's paralysis is less useful. Focus Sash gives you a guaranteed Curse, but Life Orb offers more power. Use whichever you want.
[OTHER OPTIONS]
Swinub doesn't have very many other options, as his movepool is pretty thin. Icicle Spear breaks Yache Gligars,if they are giving you trouble. Bite can fit on the physical set to provide coverage, but is lacking on power. Natural Gift and a Watmel Berry gives you a nice 80 Base Power Fire attack for the Curse set, which could surprise an incoming Bronzor. Amnesia, Toxic and Mist are all novelty options if you want them, but none ore useful enough to get a mention.
[OPINION]
Swinub is a unique Pokemon. It's typing is excellent offensively, and it, along with it's evolutions, is the only Pokemon to be immune to all types of weather damage, barring Magic Guard. It's is a great asset on a Hail team and can hold it's own in any other conditions. The problems arise from the plethora of weaknesses and it's average stats, but if you use it correctly, it is a decent addition to any team.
[COUNTERS]
Without HP Fire, Bronzor absolutely shuts Swinub down as the only Pokemon to resist Ice/Ground in LC. Munchlax and other Thick Fat Pokemon do a good job taking him out. Priotity absolutely mutilates Swinub, and if you aren't using Ice Shard, faster Pokemon do to.
Edited by comatose811, Aug 24 2008, 11:35 PM.
