[SET] Name: Choice Bander Move1: Waterfall Move2: Return Move3: Rock Slide Move 4: Sleep Talk/Ice Beam Item: Choice Band Ability: Torrent Nature: Adamant/Brave EVs: 196 HP/196 Atk/116 Def [SET COMMENTS]
The standard Choice Bander. With 25 Attack, Mudkip is going to create havoc on your opponents team if it gets to attack. Waterfall is your main attack and a reliable STAB, while Return provides you with unresisted coverage. Rock Slide is there to hit Fire,Ice and Flying Pokemon much harder.

In the last slot, you can either use Sleep Talk to be able to absorb sleep, or use Ice Beam to hit these Pokemon with lower defenses for a lot more damage. If you use the latter, a Relaxed nature is recommended.

Mudkip doesn’t need any Speed EVs because its speed is too low to make good use of it. But if you are going to use Choice Scarf, max out the Speed EVs and use a +Speed nature so you get to 21 Speed, which makes you be faster than any non-Scarfer.
[SET] Name: CurseKip Move1: Curse Move2: Waterfall Move3: Return Move4: Rock Slide Item: Oran Berry Ability: Torrent Nature: Adamant EVs: 196 HP / 196 Atk / 116 Def [SET COMMENTS]
Mudkips movepool may not be great, but it learns Curse, which is viable in LC. Switch in a Pokemon that is not gonna hurt you much. Curse when it will switch, then either attempt a sweep or try to Curse again. Now you are much sturdier and Oran Berry keeps you at high health once. Boosted Waterfalls will hurt you opponent and unlike the Choice Bander, you are not restricted to just one move. Again, Return and Rock Slide are there for coverage.

Even with a Curse, your defenses aren’t great and Mudkip may still die easily. You need to have prediction skills to pull this off effectively.
[SET] Name: Choice Specs Move1: Surf / Hydro Pump Move2: Ice Beam Move3: Hidden Power [Grass] , Hidden Power [ Electric] Move 4: Sleep Talk Item: Choice Specs Ability: Torrent Nature: Modest EVs: 196 HP / 116 Def / 196 SpA [SET COMMENTS]
Well… this is pretty much the same set as every Water Pokemon: Surf, Ice Beam, an Hidden Power and a “kinda” filler. This set becomes viable because Mudkips Special Attack is just 2 points lower than its Attack. Sleep Talk again allows you to absorb status.

This set is still inferior to the physical sets because of the lack of power ( may it be 2 points ), but it has one advantage: Many Rock and Ground Pokemon have less Special Defense than Defense so Surf will do more damage than Waterfall.
[SET] Name: Endeavor! Move1: Endeavor Move2: Endure / Substitute Move3: Waterfall Move4: Return Item: Salac Berry Ability: Torrent Nature: Adamant / Jolly EVs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe [SET COMMENTS]
This set makes use of Endeavor, a move that makes your opponent have the same HP as you. Use Endure or Substitute (former preferred), then either use Endeavor if you know your opponent is going to survive your other attacks, or boosted Waterfalls. Return is mostly filler.

Due to Mudkips rather low speed (before Salac boost), Endure is recommended, because it’s safer. Before you may get to use Substitute, your opponent may attack you, probably OHKOing you or making you unable to Substitute anymore.

Unlike the other sets, this one needs Speed EVs, enabling you to reach 21 Speed after the Salac boost. This makes you faster than any non-Scarfer.

Unfortunately, Mudkip doesn’t get AquaE Jet or any other priority move, making it easy to defeat with any priority user (unless he is guarded by Substitute )
[SET] Name: CounterCoat Move1: Counter Move 2: Mirror Coat Move 3: Waterfall Move 4: Return Item: Focus Sash Ability: Torrent Nature: Adamant / Relaxed EVs: 196 HP / 196 Atk / 116 Def [SET COMMENTS]
Mudkip both learns Counter and Mirror Coat and it can make good use of them. After successfully switching without taking damage, you use either Counter or Mirror Coat, depending on your opponent. You’ll likely be attacked first and probably OHKOed; that’s why Focus Sash lets you survive with 1 HP, allowing you to take out of your opponents Pokemon for sure.

This set is again risky: if you can’t switch in without taking damage, there is a high chance that you will be defeated without even getting use to Counter / Mirror Coat. Again, predictions are needed.
[Other Options] There are not many options due to Mudkips rather short movepool.
Iron Tail is a stronger attack to deal with Rock Types.

If you want more power, you can use Double-Edge instead of Return though it may be not preferable losing health.
[EVs] Always max out the needed Attack to make Mudkip as threatening as possible. Maxing out HP makes you survive a little longer. The rest can be either dumped into Special Attack ( if you are using a special move of course ) or Defense. Mudkip is not likely to survive any special hits after all ( Grass and Electric are common special moves). [Opinion]
Mudkip is a little fish with lots of potential. But it lacks a nice movepool, decent defenses and the most important: speed. You have to make sure you bring Mudkip in without being in 2KO range.

But on the positive side, out of all starters, Mudkip has the highest Attack. He is also able to use Curse and CounterCoat, making him fun to play with.

So I herd u liek Mudkips??
[Counters] ps: My English may not be that good so help is welcomed =D Edited by T_T, Aug 25 2008, 03:42 PM.

mm.. IMO Curse and Endeavour do not really need their own sets, they can go in OO. You should probably put in a "Standard Wall" set. And yes, I can see a few grammar mistakes, will go through them at some point. |

Hate to break it to you, but Mirror Coat and Counter are not legal on the same set. It has to be one or the other. Also I'm glad I scrolled back up to Opinion, because I was about to comment on the lack of lieking mudkipz. |

On the CB set you should run Brave because his speed is almost worthless. I also think he learns Avalanche, which would be more powerful than Ice Beam if the opponent goes first, which they probably will.

You can tutor Counter onto Mudkip and breed Mirror Coat on him in Emerald. |

Breed a Mudkip on FR/LG with Mirror Coat, evolve it into Swampert, Tutor it Counter, Migrate it to DP, breed it with another Mudkip to get a Mirror Coat/Counter Mudkip. It is possible, but very complicated. |

@ Eric: If people agree with you on using Endeavor and Curse as OO, I will do it. @ Kannon: Yeah, sry.. I intended to write "Brave" first but then I kinda thought of Relaxed ( fixed ). And according to Shoddy, Mudkip doesnt learn Avalanche. |

Mention that Mudkip doesn't enjoy the benefits of a ground typing, as I've come across plenty of people that think that Mudkip is Water-Ground like its big brothers Marshtomp and Swampert. |

@ Eric: Could you teach a Male Wobbuffet - Counter and Mirror Coat (by Heart Scale). [Amorphous egg group] Breed the Wobbuffet with a female Shellos until you get a Male Shellos with the moves. [Amorphous/Water 1] Breed said Shellos with a female Mudkip. [Water 1/Monster] = Mudkip with Counter and Mirror Coat. Just seems easier than using FR/LG Edited by BeUndead, Nov 27 2008, 04:38 PM.

CurseKip might be better off with Substitute over Rock Slide, to possibly protect him from revenge killing. However, he'd be too slow to protect himself from status most of the time, and also, finding time to Substitute between Cursing would be hard. |

Hah, yeah, you're right. I doubt any Curse set for Mudkip would be too effective in LC though. He's just too fragile to attempt it, and worse yet, he's too slow to do much else. |
