LARVITAR ANALYSIS
[SET] DDTar (lol) 1. Dragon Dance 2. Earthquake 3. Stone Edge 4. Crunch Item: Life Orb Nature: Jolly/Adamant EVs: 244Atk/188Spe/36Hp/36Def [COMMENTS] Following in his father’s footsteps, we have the DDtar. If u can pull off a Dragon Dance Larvitar’s attack reaches 24 with Jolly nature and 25 with Adamant, enough to scare a large majority of opennents. Jolly is probably the nature to chose, because after a Dragon Dance it sets you just above the majority of non-Scarfers (21), however, if you feel confident enough to pull off 2, then by all means chose Adamant. Life Orb is generally the best item here, seeing as it is the only one that reliably boosts its power and still lets pull of Dragon Dance. [SET] Choicitar 1. Earthquake 2. Stone Edge 3. Crunch 4. Sleep Talk Item: Choice Scarf / Choice Band Nature: Jolly/Adamant EVs: 244Atk/188Spe/36Hp/36Def [COMMENTS] Like most Pokemon, Larvitar has the option of wielding a choice item, and in his case its most preferably scarf. While holding a scarf, he has 21 speed, which, as I mentioned in the previous set, outspeeds the majority of non-scarfed Pokemon, though if you like power band is always a choice. Larvitar’s amazing STAB combination covers most Pokemon, however Crunch hits ghosts harder and is his best attack against Bronzor. Finally, we have, which at first glance may seem like an odd choice, is Sleep Talk. If Larvitar comes in on Hypnosis, whether accidental or not, Sleep Talk can shut up foes who start laughing at you. Not only that but sleep activates Guts so it can become quite a menace. It should be noted that if you want to rely on Sleep Talk then talking off EQ could be a good choice as a lot of Hypnotizers are immune to it, Pursuit can be a good choice because if you get it to catch fleeing Ghosts its almost a guaranteed KO. [SET] Polisher 1. Rock Polish 2. Earth Quake 3. Stone Edge 4. Crunch/Endure Item: Life Orb/Salac Berry/Liechi Berry Nature: Adamant/Jolly EVs: 244Atk/188Spe/36Hp/36Def [COMMENTS] Much like the Dragon Dance set, after it polishes itself it can go ahead and polish your foes team. Much remains the same however there are a few differences. Adamant becomes more viable seeing as 26 is more than enough to outruns non scarfed Pokemon while it also outruns slower scarfers. The item choice remains the same except for one new addition. If Larvitar can successfully use Endure the boost between Rock Polish and Salac Berry raises its speed to an impressive 32, which outruns base 20 scarfers and base 15 Rain Dancers. Also, seeing as on this set you're without an attack boost Liechi Berry could also work. [SET] Guts Abuse 1. Protect 2. Eathquake 3. Stone Edge 4. Crunch / DD / Rock Poilish Item: Toxic Orb/ Flame Orb Nature: Jolly/Adamant EVs: 244Atk/188Spe/36Hp/36Def [COMMENTS] In a sea full of other Rocks and Grounds, Larvitar has one thing separating it from the rest, its ninja ability; Guts. Larvitar has only a so-so attack stat, but with Gutsits attack goes way up. To activate Guts use the Status Orb+Protect combo. Past that it follows the lines of many other sets, using EQ+SE as its deadly stab combo. As with most Pokemon it has several final options, Crunch being the standard final physical attack, or using DD or Rock Polish to boost it's stats. [SET] TR "Sweeper" 1. Earthquake 2. Stone Edge 3. Outrage/Crunch 4. HP Fire Item: Life Orb/Toxic Orb Nature: Brave EVS: 244Attack/236SpAtk IVs: 31/30/31/0/30/31 [COMMENTS] One of Larvitar's main problems is the fact that its speed is rather slow. However, as supposed to boosting it you can use it to your advantage with Trick Room. Larvitar reaches a rather low 8 speed, which means it underspeeds alot of the metagame. The standard 2 moves essentially beat most of the metagame, making it a killer Pokemon. Sadly, this set runs into one major problem, Bronzor, who resists everything in his physical arsenal, which is why we use HP Fire! Should it be running max HP/+Def the Bronzor suffers a terrible 2KO from Hp Fire, but only if you use Life Orb. If you don't have a fear of Bronzor then by all means use Toxic Orb. It should also be noted that Outrage becomes a better option than Crunch because only Steels resist it and if you don't want your opponent trying to out predict you and come in on immunities and resists it works very well. However, if you still want to use it then by all means do. [OTHER OPTIONS] As far as physical attacks go, it has few viable options, seeing as the coverage they add is redundant. Iron Head is one of them, though Stone Edge covers most of what it will. Outrage is also usable, especially on choice sets, seeing as only steels can come in and resist, however most of those Larvitar should switch out from. It does have a few support moves, such as Taunt and Stealth Rock, and you could make use of Torment. Curse is an interesting option but in such a fast paced metagame its use is extremely limited. Defensively it is rather weak, but in Sand Storm it's spdef is okay, being able to resist non-super effective hits to some extent. Both of the status orbs can find their way onto most of the sets. [EVs] Like on most attackers, maxing Attack and Speed is the most important. After that you have 78 EVs to work with. Dumping them into defenses is your only real option, and it allows you to increase two of its defensive stats by one. On the TR set obviously you want to decrease speed and boosting special attack helps it kill Bronzor with HP Fire [OPINION] At first, Larvitar is nothing special, but, when it gets its boosts it can be a menace. Sadly, the MiniTTar’s performance is severely limited due to the fact that there are so many Pokemon running around with priority moves, 5 of which Larvi is weak to. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad Pokemon, but if you try to use it it would be wise to Croagunk and a random ghost alongside to absorb the three most common priorities that would be used against it. For those that want to know exactly what it can do, here are some calcs: STONE EDGE (LO+1 DD, Neutral Nature, Max Attack) Max HP/+Def Gligar: 18-21/26 (2KO) Max HP/+Def Bronzor: 10-12/25 (4KO, 3 if you're lucky) Max HP/+Def Geodude: 10-11/23 (4KO, 3 if you're lucky) Max HP/+Def Onix: 8-9/23 (5KO, 4 if you're lucky) Max Hp/+Def Bonsly: 19-23/24 (2KO) Max HP/+Def Nosepass: 16-19/22 (2KO) Max Hp/+Def Aron: 10-11/24 (4KO) Max Hp/+Def Shieldon: 9-10/22 (4KO) Earthquake from the same Larvitar OHKOs all non-immune Pokemon listed above. Crunch from the same Larvitar does 11-13 on Bronzor (2KO-4KO) [COUNTERS] Larvitar can easily be beaten, however some things cannot come into safely. Bronzor resists it's STAB combo and can EQ it back. Gligar can also wall it to some extent however it has to careful because Stone Edge can dent it. If anything with Mach Punch, Vacuum Wave, Aqua Jet or Bullet Punch or Ice Shard can safely come in then they can kill it, as can things that outrun it. Diglett can revenge kill it with STAB EQ but should it fail to outrun it then it will get KOd by Larvi’s own EQ. Edited by TPM, Aug 28 2008, 02:22 PM.

Expert belt is normally crap with life orb doing less recoil damage than usual. I'm pretty sure Larvitar gets stuff like elemental punches and fire punch mr bronzor may be worth mentioning. it probably also gets some useful dark moves eg taunt |

He doesn't get any punches Dixie; remember Larvitar needs to go through his armless stage first. Please refer to items with there full name. Don't say Life/Flame/Toxic Orb. Why a Salac Berry on a speed boosting set? Seems redundant. You also need an other options section. Edit: Oh, and a stat chart too. Edited by TheMantyke, Aug 8 2008, 12:47 AM.

Yes, I know it needs an Other Options sections, but was just getting what I had already done put up. And with the Salac Boost it outruns almost everything, but I could get rid of it if it seems useless. |

Also, if you're using a Salac on that set, a Liechi Berry might be viable for the same reason. I suggest you take the status orbs off and stick them in Other Options, as they fit in any set but aren't really the most efficient way of doing things. |

Needs a stat chart, Opinion needs expanding and a few other things need a look over to check for small errors. Jolly should be the only option for sets that get a boost if they let it hit the magic 21 speed. I think a set like Protect/Earthquake/Stone Edge/{Crunch/DD/Rock Polish}@Toxic Orb is needed. Guts is one of the main things setting it apart from the other Rock/Ground types |

A bit sloppy, really. Tune up the analysis and make it more specific. Calcs, for example. |
