move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Hidden Power Fighting / Hidden Power Rock
move 4: U-Turn / Me First
item: Choice Scarf / Choice Specs
ability: Synchronise
nature: Timid
evs: 116 Hp /196 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

A relatively standard Natu set-up, Choice Specs boosts Natu's admittedly average Special Attack to a more useable level, and from there predict and kill something. The Choice Scarf variant plays somewhat differently, and you substitute the raw power of the Specs variant for the ability to act as a speedy revenge killer of sorts. Psychic gets STAB and so is key to the set, being Natu's most powerful move. Shadow Ball hits Ghosts and other Psychics for Super Effective damage, and is your most powerful weapon against the omnipresent Bronzor. Hidden Power Fighting is generally the superior option in the third slot, as it provides coverage on Houndour, and also hits all of the steel types who resist your other moves, in particular Aron and Shieldon. Hidden Power Rock doesn't hit the steels at all, but it does hit both Murkrow and Houndour hard, who resist both your other attacks. Hitting these two is vital as they will often carry a strong Pursuit to put Natu permeanently out of commission. If you're more interested in power over type coverage, Hidden Power Flying gets STAB and still hits both Houndour and Murkrow relatively hard.

As for the last slot, you have two very useful options. U-Turn is the safer option, and as such is probably more useful. Whilst coming off Natu's painfully low base 50 Attack stat, it allows you to scout your opponent's switch and then switch to a counter yourself, allowing you to keep one step ahead of your opponent. However, Me First, whilst only really viable if you use a Choice Scarf, can be very fun for throwing Thunderbolts back at Staryu, Draco Meteors back at Dratini and the like. However, it is highly prediction reliant, and getting yourself locked into it can give your opponent an opportunity to set up on Natu.

[SET]
name: Psuedo-Pass
move 1: Reflect / Light Screen
move 2: Psychic
move 3: U-Turn / Roost
move 4: Hidden Power Fighting
item: Oran Berry / Light Clay
ability: Synchronise
nature: Timid
evs: 116 Hp /196 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Whilst Natu's base defenses are laughable, it does have several useful resistances, including a Ground immunity and a 4x resistance to Fighting. This can grant it several opportunities to switch in largely unscathed, which, combined with Natu's great speed, can allow you to set up a Reflect or a Light Screen before taking a hit, vastly increasing it's defensive capabilities. U-Turn is great allows you to get out and scout your opponent's switch, allowing you to go to a counter that will appreciate the screen support. Meanwhile, Roost allows you to come in repeatedly on Stealth Rock and high-powered Close Combats without getting worn down too badly over time. Be wary that Natu will rarely find time to Roost except on switches, and that it does halve arguably it's most valuable resistance (Fighting) and remove it's Ground immunity against anything slower.

As a lone attack, Hidden Power Fighting pairs best with Psychic to hit the most types for neutral, although then Natu is walled horribly by opposing Psychic types. As far as item choice goes, Oran Berry makes up for the total lack of healing this set offers if you opt to use U-Turn as opposed to Roost, whilst Light Clay will make your screens last three turns longer, making it the superior option if you already have healing with Roost.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Hidden Power Fighting
move 4: Shadow Ball / Substitute
item: Life Orb / Oran Berry / Salac Berry
ability: Synchronise
nature: Timid
evs: 116 Hp /196 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Whilst the Choice set is focused on hit-and-run attacks, this set is much more focused on cleaning up in the late-game, once prospective counters have been weakened. Natu is really much too fragile to abuse Calm Mind to the extent that it's Substitutes become unbreakable, so Shadow Ball is recommended over Substitute as it's use is generally limited and the extra coverage offered by Shadow Ball is welcome. However, Substitute does provide protection from Pursuit users such as Murkrow, and can also allow you to get around Sucker Punches.

Unless you plan on using Substitute, Life Orb is the optimal item choice here. However, if you do use Substitute, Oran Berry is a worthwhile option to regenerate HP lost from Substitute. Substituting down to 25% to activate a Salac Berry to patch up Natu's mediocre speed isn't a bad idea either.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Zen Headbutt
move 2: U-Turn
move 3: Pluck / Drill Peck
move 4: Sucker Punch
item: Choice Band
ability: Synchronise
nature: Jolly
evs: 116 Hp /196 Atk / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

You're operating with a pretty measly base 50 Attack here, but you've got a few neat tricks here that could surprise a few potential counters, most notably Munchlax. Zen Headbutt gets STAB and comes with a neat 20% flinch chance, which you might get some mileage out of against slower opponents. U-Turn gets a boost here so might actually do some significant damage, as well as still allowing you to scout switches and respond accordingly. Drill Peck is a more reliable secondary STAB option, but Pluck will be considerably more powerful against opponents with berries, and might net you a quick speed boost, or, more likely, some healing from an Oran Berry. Sucker Punch provides a powerful priority attack that also gives excellent coverage with your other attacks.

You could try using a Choice Scarf set here; it certainly has value if you plan to abuse Zen Headbutt's flinch rate. However, without the power provided by the Choice Band, Natu's offensive capabilities are cut, and Natu's low Attack score will make it hard for it to do any real damage.

[SET]
name: Mixed Attacker
move 1: Sucker Punch
move 2: Psychic
move 3: U-Turn
move 4: Pluck / Drill Peck
item: Life Orb
ability: Synchronise
nature: Naive
evs: 116 Atk /196 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set incorporates the best of Natu's physical and special movepools. Psychic is a given on the set; it's Natu's highest powered STAB attack off it's higher Attack stat, making it the set's most powerful option. Sucker Punch gets priority and is good for hitting the likes of Gastly and Misdreavus, both of whom are faster and would love to Shadow Ball you. U-Turn allows you to scout switches. Pluck is recommended over Drill Peck just as stealing a Salac, Liechi, Petaya or Oran Berry would all really help this set out. Drill Peck is a more reliable alternative if Pluck's inconsistent damage is a turn-off. Naive is recommended over Hasty because most of Natu's useful resistances are on the physical side of the offensive spectrum.

[Other Options]

Natu has access to many support moves, all of which could be fitted onto a more defensively-based set. The most notable of these are Wish and Trick Room, both of which work very well with U-Turn should you choose to use them. Natu gets Haze, but gets very few decent opportunities to use it and so should rarely be considered. In terms of status moves, Natu learns Thunder Wave and Toxic. The latter is generally pretty useless, though Thunder Wave is useful for slowing quicker Pokemon down to a more manageable pace. Hidden Power Fire is a decent option, if only to hit Bronzor. You lose a lot of coverage and it's only encouraging Houndour to switch into you even more to Pursuit, so watch out for that. Hidden Power Electric hits Mantyke harder, but not much else.

In terms of taking status, Psycho Shift could be pretty useful, but it is useless against the only status that is commonly used (Sleep) Sleep Talk could go on the Choiced sets if you really need to absorb sleep, though Natu isn't particularly good at taking sleep from a lot of the common sleepers, most notably Gastly. It does pretty well against all the Grass types carrying Sleep Powder though. As for abilities, either ability works, though neither of them will really help you very often. Synchronise is generally the better choice, as unless you carry Sleep Talk you shouldn't be switching into Sleep moves anyway. Synchronise does work quite well with a Lum Berry, if you want to try that.

[EVs]

You'll always want to max that Speed, and generally that Special Attack too. 196 EVs are required to max each stat. After that, you can gain two extra HP points by running an extra 116 Hp EVs. On the psuedo-pass set, max speed is still recommended to get the Screen up as quickly as possible. Max speed with a +Speed nature is required to beat out opposing Dratini, Krabby, Bagon and 0 speed Gligar, all of whom are very important to beat. It also allows you to tie with Mankey, Houndour and Carvanha, all of whom can really hurt Natu if allowed to go first. If you wanted to lose some Special Attack in exchange for HP, you could swap the HP and Special Attack EVs on the more defensive sets. Otherwise, max Special Attack and Speed are the order of the day.

[Opinion]

Natu won't be taking the standard metagame by storm any time soon. Mediocre stats, a limited movepool, as well as an unfortunate Stealth Rock weakness are all serious issues that Natu struggles to contend with. However, the psychic bird is perfectly useable in standard, with several valuable resistances, a few neat tricks up it's sleeve such as U-Turn, Me First and Wish, and provides a refreshing change of pace. Despite this, it is really in UU where Natu shines.

[Counters]

Bronzor is the safest switch into Natu you'll find, with a 4x resistance to Natu's STAB Psychic, and not being weak to anything else. STAB Gyro Balls rip through Natu's poor defense. Munchlax walls special versions all day long, but has to watch out for Choice Banded Zen Headbutts. Mantyke doesn't do quite as well as Munchlax, but can come in once or twice and has Ice Beam to dispose of Natu quickly. Drowzee is a relatively safe bet, particularly against variants that lack Shadow Ball (and U-Turn!) Spoink and Mime Jr. work in a similar manner. Aron and Shieldon can come in on pretty much anything except Hidden Power Fighting, and do some significant damage in return. Magnemite works similarly, but also has to be wary of the rare Hidden Power Fire. Lileep fares pretty well if you can offer Sandstorm support, whilst Duskull can take one good hit and threaten Natu with Shadow Sneak. Beldum doesn't fear anything Natu can really throw at it, but Beldum isn't a very good Pokemon otherwise and won't be seen very often.

Pokemon with Pursuit will really wreck Natu. Murkrow tops the list, as it gets STAB on it, is faster, and is also neutral to Hidden Power Fighing. However, it has to look out for Hidden Power Rock on the Choice sets. Houndour works similarly, though fears Hidden Power Fighting and requires a Choice Scarf to be faster than Natu. You don't necessarily need an outright counter to Natu, just prey on it's middling speed and offense and it shouldn't do you too much damage.

At a quick glance, counters section needs bulking up considerably. Will do that tomorrow, don't really have time now. Also needs a stat chart.

mm... How about a Mix set with something like Sucker Punch/Psychic/[Flying STAB]/{U-Turn/HP Something/Shadow Ball}@LO/Sash with several ev spreads listed depending on if you go mostly Phy. or Sp.?

This will help with Stat Charts

I suppose a mixed set could be workable; I'll add something tomorrow as I don't really have time atm.

To do list;

~ Add a mixed set.
~ Add various Hidden Powers to Other Options, most notably Fire, maybe Electric.
~ Bulk up the counters section slightly.
~ Add what max speed outspeeds/misses out on in EV section.
~ Spell check.
~ Make and add Stat chart

Added stat chart ~ eric

Sorry for the double post, but I've made all of the fixes. I'm not completely convinced about a mixed set though; it doesn't seem to be doing much to eliminate specific counters. If everyone thinks it would be beneficial I'll add one, but atm I'm not seeing any reason to go mixed.

EDIT: Bar maybe easing up SP prediction, I guess.

Double posting is fine, and... if you put the mixed set in I will call this approved. To me being able to use both its higher attacking stat and a strong priority move (+ the ever useful U-Turn) is too good to pass up.

You already have reliable STAB in Psychic, so I really don't see much use for Drill Peck on that set at all. If people really hate Pluck, I guess Hidden Power Fighting could be the alternate option in that set.

Its a reliable Special STAB, Drill Peck is Physical so would be used for different things.

And Steels do wall the mix set kinda badly, however you can simply U-Turn out.
