Set 1: ChoiceDuo

  • Brave Bird/Pluck
  • Return
  • Quick Attack
  • Steel Wing/Double Hit

Item: Choice Band/Choice Scarf
Nature: Jolly/Adamant
EVs: 236 Atk/236 Spe

Comments:
Doduo's one of the premiere bruisers in the Little Cup metagame. Packing above-average Attack and Speed, it can make excellent use of the two choice items available to it. Choice Band gives it a very respectable 27 attack with which to fire powerful Brave Birds or Plucks. Brave Bird is more effective as a general use attack, but Pluck has the same base power against Berry-holding foes while avoiding recoil, and can serve as a pseudo-counter to walls (read: Bronzor) switching into Doduo's attacks. Return is more general-use STAB. Quick Attack is useful priority, especially to beat out a Sucker Punch on the Scarf set. The last slot is filler. Unlike Taillow, which employs a similar set, Doduo doesn't get U-Turn to scout. Steel Wing will hit Rock-types hard, while Double Hit can break some of the weaker sashed Pokemon- a particularly good use for it is using Scarf Doduo to counter Focus Sash Abra, which will be OHKO'd 80% of the time by Double Hit, which will break the sash and proceed to finish it off. The same goes for Sashed Diglett.

Set 1: OrbDuo

  • Brave Bird/Pluck
  • Return
  • Quick Attack
  • HP Fighting

Item: Life Orb
Nature: Naughty/Naive
EVs: 236 Atk/236 Spe

Doduo can run an alternate set with Life Orb, where it employs an interesting strategy. Brave Bird/Pluck are for good Flying STAB, while Return hits hard on the Normal side. Quick Attack is for Priority. The last slot is actually one of the coolest things- Aron and Shieldon are so cripplingly weak to Fighting that HP Fighting, even off of a meager 10 Special Attack, will absolutely destroy Aron, and deal 90% minimum to Shieldon, which is enough to KO it if it's switched in on any one of your attacks.

Set 3: EndFlail

  • Endure
  • Flail
  • Agility
  • Drill Peck

Item: Liechi Berry
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 236 Atk/236 Spe

Comments:
Doduo's good attacking stats combine well with STAB Flail to create a force to be reckoned with. Bring Doduo in on a choiced attack that won't hurt it, such as a Shadow Ball or an EQ, and then proceed to Agility up. Endure a hit that will kill you (not hard with Doduo's defenses, or lack thereof), and then proceed to smash your way through LC with a STAB 150 BP move at 28 attack and 34 Speed. Drill Peck is secondary STAB and is Doduo's best way of hitting Ghosts.

Alternately, this set can be done SubFlail style, which can possibly give more chances to get an Agility in. Simply take 76 EVs out of Speed and put them in HP, which gives you 21 HP, which lets you sub down to 1 HP for Flailing. This has the advantage of making you immune to crippling status and giving you more chances to Agility up, but also makes it easier for your opponent to bring in a counter.

Other Options:
Doduo packs Endeavor+Priority for a gimmick set, but Treecko does it better with Counter. Pursuit is an option if you can bring it in on a Choiced Poke that you're immune to, such as Diglett or Gastly.

EVs:
Attack and Speed. The only time you'd do otherwise is to get 21 HP for a SubFlail set.

Opinion:
Doduo's a great Little Cup pokemon, but it's almost completely overshadowed by Taillow, with its greater Speed and Guts boost. However, Doduo does have a couple things that can help set it apart. First, its Flail is incredibly destructive. Second, it can get excellent attack and speed without having to take damage every turn. Doduo's a great choice for putting a dent in any opponent's team, with excellent Speed and Attack to do its job.

Counters:
Steel-types, particularly Bronzor, can switch into its attacks with impunity. Aron and Shieldon both boast amazing 4X resistances to its attacks, and pack STAB Rock-type attacks to dispose of the bird quickly, but need to be extremely careful of HP Fighting. Ghost-types can come in on Choiced Normal-Type attacks and hit it with a Thunderbolt, though they need to watch out for Brave Bird.

Banded variants are susceptible to a number of threats. Staryu, Abra, and Murkrow always outspeed, and Doduo is a very frail Pokemon- any strong attack from any one of those three will dispose of it handily. Murkrow can also hit scarfed variants with a Sucker Punch to great effect, though it needs to watch for Quick Attack if it hasn't been locked into a move yet.

Fuck, Doduo's stats are badass!

Drill Peck does just as much damage as Faint Attack to Ghosts on the Flail set.

Won't Sheildon and Aron prefur to hit Dodou with STAB rock attacks instead of Ice Beam? :/

It seems to me that Life Orb might be a better option for the Choice set than CB. You can get Doduo's HP to 19, and it would make it more difficult for Rock pokemon and Bronzor to take advantage of you.

The problem is that the Life Orb set is just a slower Taillow, but I'll add it as an option on the Choice set.

It's stupid time! I'm going to test the damage output of HP Fighting on Aron and Shieldon.

Holy shit... this is awesome.

HP Fighting does at least 90% to standard Shieldon, and is a 1HKO against all Aron. It's now a standard on a Lorb set, and I'll be looking at putting it as an alternative on Taillow now. Of course, you'll have to go with something like a Naughty nature, but given that Doduo's not exactly the epitome of durability, it won't mind the drop.
