[SET] name: Agility Baton Pass move 1: Agility move 2: Baton Pass move 3: Return move 4: Shadow Claw item: Focus Sash nature: Jolly evs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 236 Spe [SET COMMENTS]
This is arguably one of Aipom's neatest niches in Little Cup; passing Agilities around. The premise of the set is relatively simple; use Agility whilst taking a hit, survive with Focus Sash and Baton Pass out, now outspeeding nearly everything with a massive 38 speed. Beware of entry hazards and rogue weather; it would probably be beneficial to play this early on in the game before Stealth Rock goes down. It has decent appeal as a lead; it can beat out most Scarfers, as well as the omnipresent Bronzor.

Shadow Claw provides coverage against Misdreavus and Gastly, who would otherwise wall you. However, it does leave you in a tight spot against the likes of Shieldon and Aron. However, unless they are carrying Roar, the latter two can do very little to prevent your pass, and are much less common than Gastly and Misdreavus, so Shadow Claw is the superior option. If you have a strong Pursuit user elsewhere on your team though, Brick Break is worth considering.
[SET] name: Nasty Plot Pass move 1: Nasty Plot move 2: Baton Pass move 3: Shadow Ball move 4: Hidden Power Fighting / Swift item: Focus Sash Nature: Timid evs: 72 HP / 196 SpA / 240 Spe [SET COMMENTS]
As well as Agility, Aipom also gets Nasty Plot to pass around to it's team-mates. The premise is simple; Nasty Plot on a switch, perhaps using the cover of one of Aipom's more offensively based sets, take a hit and Baton Pass +2 Special Attack to anyone in your party. Staryu, Magby and Elekid all make fantastic recipients due to their good speed stats and wide type coverage. If playing in ubers, then Yanma is the best choice due to it's 4x resistance to Fighting and the ability to boost its own speed.

Swift is not essential here as without Technician to power it up, it is decidedly weak and barely offers more power than Aipom's other moves. Meanwhile, Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Fighting offer flawless coverage, so they are recommended over Swift. If you really can't make do without STAB, then use it over Hidden Power Fighting, as otherwise Gastly and Misdreavus would wall you completely.
[SET] name: Choice move 1: Double-Edge / Return move 2: U-Turn move 3: Brick Break move 4: Pursuit / Fire Punch item: Choice Scarf / Choice Band nature: Jolly evs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 236 Spe [SET COMMENTS]
Generic Choice monkey; his stats are ideal for the role. Return provides a reliable STAB attack, whilst Double Edge's power increase will often come in useful, though the recoil can quickly kill off Aipom. U-Turn is a fantastic option as always for scouting, whilst Brick Break provides coverage against the likes of Rhyhorn, Geodude and Aron. Fire Punch in the last slot revokes Bronzor's free switch-in priveleges, whilst Pursuit is great for nailing frail Pokemon on the switch.
[SET] name: Sub-Punch move 1: Substitute move 2: Focus Punch move 3: Return move 4: Shadow Claw item: Salac Berry / Liechi Berry nature: Jolly evs: 196 Atk / 236 Spe ivs: 0 Hp [SET COMMENTS]
Aipom is perfectly suited for the role of a Sub-Puncher; his decent Attack allows him to hurt pretty much anything that switches in, and this combination of attacks offers flawless coverage, hitting everything in Little Cup for at least neutral damage. Return is obviously recommended here as Double Edge's recoil will kill you very quickly in conjunction with Substitute.

With no EVs in HP and an IV of 0, Aipom's HP hits 20; allowing your berry of choice to activate after three Substitutes as opposed to four. Salac Berry is typically the better option due to the prevalence of quick Scarfers, though if you're feeling confident you can try a Liechi Berry; this can work exceptionally well if you have paralysis support elsewhere in your team.
[SET] name: Flinch move 1: Fake Out move 2: Pursuit move 3: Return move 4: U-Turn / Brick Break item: Life Orb nature: Jolly evs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 236 Spe [SET COMMENTS]
Unfortunately, with no Technician, Aipom's Fake Out is not quite as viable as it is on big brother Ambipom, though it is certainly a viable choice. Fake Out will still hit relatively hard backed up by base 70 Attack and STAB, which is great considering that it is essentially free damage. Pursuit is recommended here as it allows you to catch those fleeing in order to nullify your flinch. U-Turn is still brilliant for scouting, whilst Brick Break hits Aron and Shieldon. Unfortunately, Fake Out is illegal with Double Edge.
[SET] name: Last Resort move 1: Fake Out move 2: Last Resort move 3: - move 4: - item: Life Orb / Silk Scarf nature: evs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 236 Spe [SET COMMENTS]
This set certainly borders on gimmicky, but can work well. Make sure to play this with a reliable Pursuit user (Munchlax works well) to take out the Ghosts who are immune to your entire set. Diglett support can be invaluable as well, to get rid of bulky normal resists, though this is much less important. Fake Out is for the sake of free damage, and after that just plough through your opponent's team with a base 130 Last Resort. Whilst simple on paper, this can really lay out quite a hurting with the adequate support.
[SET] name: Counter move 1: Taunt move 2: Counter move 3: Return move 4: Shadow Claw item: Focus Sash nature: Hasty evs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 236 Spe ivs: 0 Def [SET COMMENTS]
This set has excellent value as a lead. Taunt will prevent Stealth Rock going up, as well as slower status leads. It also encourages them to attack you, allowing you to Counter them for an easy OHKO. Whilst Return and Shadow Claw don't offer particularly good coverage, most of the things it leaves you in trouble against are typically physical anyway, so you can probably kill them with Counter. Generally, don't bother using this set outside of leading, as it almost certainly won't work. The difficulties in switching it in combined with entry hazards and rogue weather make it unsuitable.

U-Turn, Fake Out and Pursuit are all very good options on this set, and can go over either of the two attacking moves. U-Turn can scout a switch to a counter, allowing you to keep the upper hand, whilst Fake Out can break opposing Sashes as well as getting free damage. Pursuit punishes anything that decides to switch out, potentially in fear of a Fake Out. [Other Options]
Aipom's fantastic movepool contains a lot of note that was not mentioned in any of the above sets. Fire Punch was mentioned, but Aipom also gets Ice Punch, which is your most powerful option against Gligar and Gible, and is also useful against the likes of Onix, Rhyhorn and Larvitar. Thunderpunch is less useful, but it does help slightly against Omanyte and Mantyke, though you shouldn't have too many problems with the latter anyway. Payback is a great choice on the choiced sets, for hitting incoming Pokemon with an 100 BP Dark attack. Generally though, the things weak to it shouldn't be switching into Aipom anyway. Silk Scarf is an option on most sets in place of Life Orb if the recoil puts you off. Screech is good for forcing switches, and can be punished with Pursuit, but Aipom is pretty fragile for the role. You could try an Expert Belt, but the fact that Aipom's STAB hits nothing for Super Effective makes it a bit of a waste of an item slot.

Body Slam is an alternate STAB attack to use if you like the chance of paralysis, but typically Aipom prefers immediate power to side-effects. Sleep Talk on choiced sets allows you to absorb sleep, to a degree, which would work well if your team struggles to do so. Aipom's signature move, Double Hit, is also available, and is useful for breaking Substitutes. Unfortunately, without the Technician boost it's considerably weaker than his other options, and it's imperfect accuracy make it a poor choice. You could attempt a Nasty Plotting set, though if so it would be recommended to centre it around Baton Passing; Aipom's low SpA stat and lack of decent special STAB makes it an unattractive option otherwise.
[EVs]
Aipom will almost always benefit most from maxing his very capable Speed and Attack stats. 196 EVs are required to max his Attack out at 16 (17 if you elect to run Adamant over Jolly) whilst 236 will max out your speed at 19 with a positive nature. Putting the last 76 EVs in HP will give you an extra point there. Unfortunately, even with a 0 IV and no EVs, Aipom's HP is 20, so you can't hit 19 for minimum Life Orb recoil.
[Opinion]
Aipom would have been so much better if he had inherited Technician from Ambipom. The fact that both his abilities do absolutely nothing in a battle really makes him considerably less dangerous. However, he's still got great stats to work with, and a fantastic movepool which makes him arguably one of the most unpredictable Pokemon in Little Cup.
[Counters]
Bronzor is the number one contender here; he resists Aipom's STAB attacks, and doesn't take too much from anything else except the rare Fire Punch. Aron and Shieldon are excellent counters where Brick Break and Focus Punch are not present. Geodude and Rhyhorn are similar, except they need to fear the odd Ice Punch as well. Onix even takes Brick Breaks and Ice Punches relatively well, and only really has to fear Focus Punch. Magnemite doesn't particularly like Fire Punches, Brick Breaks or Focus Punches, but he can come in on Aipom's Choiced STAB attacks relatively easily. Kabuto and Omanyte work in a similar way, but trade a disregard for Fire Punch for a fear of Thunderpunch.

Bonsly's decent defense makes it a decent switch into anything that isn't a Brick Break or Focus Punch. Nosepass is all but identical in this regard, but finds it much harder to dispatch of Aipom once it's got in safely. Gastly and Misdreavus (And to a lesser extent Shuppet) are useful to have around when facing Aipom; their immunities to his STAB attacks, as well as Brick Break and Focus Punch makes coming in relatively easy, particularly on choiced variants. Obviously, they have to watch out for Shadow Claw, Payback and, most of all, Pursuit.
Edited by Evil Hamster, Aug 5 2008, 05:52 PM.

I've got no idea how to do the stat charts; I'll work one out manually next time I can get on Shoddy if there isn't an easier way. I've written up the NP pass set though. [SET] name: Nasty Plot Pass move 1: Nasty Plot move 2: Baton Pass move 3: Shadow Ball move 4: Hidden Power Fighting / Swift item: Focus Sash Nature: Timid evs: 72 HP / 196 SpA / 240 Spe [SET COMMENTS]
As well as Agility, Aipom also gets Nasty Plot to pass around to it's team-mates. Personally I don't think Screech needs its own set, forcing switches for passive damage is just not a viable strategy in LC. Maybe something in OO about it but not its own set. Would it be possible to combine Flinch and Counter sets into a Lead set? I am thinking something like: Fake Out Counter U-Turn Taunt @Sash with Return and Shadow Claw in Set Comments saying that they could go over any move, and that if Counter is removed Life Orb is a decent Item choice. Removed the screech set, added it in other options. I think that two counter-sash sets is slightly OTT; will mention both those options in the current Counter set though as they would work well. That one functions pretty well as a lead anyway. Edited by Evil Hamster, Aug 5 2008, 05:49 PM.

mm.. Haveing a set just for "Flinch" that has neally the same moves as several other sets looks odd to me.. could you change Choice to Physical attacker, make LO an option for it and put Fake Out as an option over Pursuit / Fire Punch? Set comments would need a bit of fixing.... but I think it would look better. |
