name: Swords Dancer
move1: Swords Dance
move2: Hi Jump Kick
move3: Crunch
move4: Bullet Punch
nature: Jolly
item: Focus Sash/Life Orb
evs: 116 HP/196 Att/196 Spe

[Set Comments]
This set is one that Mankey cannot do better. Use Focus Sash to guarantee a Swords Dance or Life Orb if you think you can Dance on the opponent's switch. Hi Jump Kick and Crunch will be your means of sweeping while Bullet Punch is there for something fast that comes in. 32 Attack is a great deal of strength. Unfortunately, Gligar still beats this set, as Crunch only 2KO's when you get the defense drop, and even then, not always.

name: Choice
move1: Hi Jump Kick
move2: Crunch
move3: Blaze Kick
move4: Rock Slide/HP Ice/Bullet Punch
ability: Inner Focus
nature: Adamant/Jolly
item: Choice Scarf/ Choice Band
evs: 116 HP/196 Att/196 Spe

[Set Comments]
Basic choice set. Riolu can't do this as well as Mankey without access to Close Combat or the elemental punches, but he does get Blaze Kick, which will hit Bronzor hard. Other than that, Hi Jump Kick is for STAB and Crunch is for Ghosts. The last slot is up to preference. Rock Slide will do more to incoming Murkrow, HP Ice will hit Gligar fairly hard (not an OHKO, but stronger than any phyical attacks), and Bullet Punch is good for revenge. Remember that Riolu doesn't get STAB on Bullet Punch, though.

name: EndRev
move1: Reversal
move2: Endure
move3: Crunch/Bullet Punch
move4: Agility/Swords Dance
ability: Inner Focus
nature: Adamant/Jolly
item: Liechi Berry/Salac Berry
evs: 116 HP/196 Att/196 Spe

[Set Comments]
Reversal and Flail are fairly common options in Little Cup. Riolu gets both Swords Dance and Agility, so it can boost whichever stat its berry doesn't (i.e. Swords Dance goes with Salac Berry, Agility with Liechi) and then Endure down to 1 HP to power up Reversal. Crunch will take out ghosts trying to stop Reversal. You may want to use Bullet Punch against incoming priority moves, though.

[Other Options]
Cross Chop is a choice over Hi Jump Kick for the Critical Hit ratio, but generally is an inferior option due to accuracy. Shadow Claw can always be used over Crunch, but it's weaker and the Dark/Fighting combo is really only blocked by Croagunk. Earthquake is a powerful move that could go on a phycial set, but doesn't offer the best coverage when used with Fighting attacks. Poison Jab is a fairly strong attack, but is less useful than Blaze Kick. Quick Attack could be used over Bullet Punch if you were trying to hit something that resists Steel. Focus Punch can be used on a choice set (with careful prediction) or possibly with Substitute. Special sets are useless because of his nearly non-existant special movepool (consisting of Focus Blast, Vacuum Wave, and Hidden Power).

Also, Steadfast is almost never a great choice on Riolu. It could be used to take advantage of Fake Out, but Riolu is better off avoiding the flinch and striking back quickly.

[Opinion]
Riolu isn't that bad, but is generally just a weaker version of Mankey (base 70 attack vs. base 80). Riolu also happens to be slower (base 60 vs. base 70), and he doesn't have access to Close Combat. The only real advantage Riolu has over Mankey is that he gets Crunch and can boost his stats better, and there isn't even a lot of time for boosting up in Little Cup.

[Counters]
The choice set is countered by good prediction and Gligar, although he should watch out for HP Ice. The Reversal set is countered like any other Reversal set: priority moves, weather, choice scarfers (also Gligar). Like Mankey, Riolu is strong enough to threaten many switch-ins, but is revenge killed with ease.

TOP SCORE

You really need a basic Swords Dance set there.

Swords Dance
Crunch
Cross Chop
Bullet Punch

It almost needs mention because of how strong it can be.

Im going to code the chart for you.

Okay. Actually, yeah, that set would be doing something Mankey can't.

And thanks for coding the chart. Maybe for a future analysis I'll learn to do it myself...

Back. Will see in the next week or so how much I can contribute.

expand counters section; gastly, koffing, gligar, croagunk, mantyke and the like all need to be mentioned. don't ALWAYS refer to Mankey since Riolu is not 100% outclassed by it.

EndRev doesnt' really work in Little Cup as there's 500,000 priority moves being thrown everywhere, not to mention it only reaches 150 BP.

Couldn't you run Stone Edge for the 2HKO on Gligar on the SDer?

As for a Special movepool, he gets STAB priority Vacuum Wave, HP Ice, and (I think) Dark Pulse? I guess that could work if you're insane.
