Set 1: Gutsy Bird
Item: Toxic Orb/Flame Orb Nature: Jolly/Adamant EVs: 36 HP/236 Atk/236 Spe Comments: Works like its big brother in OU, Swellow. Once the Orb of your choice activates, you'll be inflicted with a status ailment that pumps its meager 15/16 attack up to an excellent 22/24, while giving you a powerful 140 Base Power STAB Facade. Protect can be used to ensure the activation of the orb as well as to scout for moves that would normally shut you down. Brave Bird is strong STAB, but the recoil is a big problem for something as frail as Taillow. U-Turn lets you switch out while dealing some damage as soon as a counter shows up such as any Rock or Steel type. The slashes are all matters of preference. Protect isn't always necessary- the orb will activate on a switchin, and Taillow's Flying type means you can switch into Earthquakes and get a free boost, while its Normal type lets it take Ghost-type attacks. Pursuit is more useful for the latter- come in on something like a Scarfed Gastly's Shadow Ball, and threaten with a Pursuit. Alternately, you can use a STAB Quick Attack to foil priority users. Pluck is an alternative over Brave Bird- if the opponent is holding a Berry, its power doubles, becoming a recoil-less BP 120 STAB move, while simultaneously activating the opponent's berry. Given how common the Oran Berry is, Pluck can also serve a a type of pseudo-recovery, but Brave Bird is more reliable. Toxic Orb is preferred, as its damage output is less than Flame Orb's for the first two turns, and it's rare for Taillow to last any longer. Set 2: Choosy Bird
Item: Choice Band/Choice Scarf Nature: Jolly/Adamant EVs: 36 HP/236 Atk/236 Spe Comments: This set isn't as useful as the first, but it can potentially be more powerful. Choice Band gives the same boost as Guts, but locks it into one move. However, if you can correctly predict a Will-o-Wisp or a Thunder Wave (or god forbid a Toxic), you can manage to pull off an amazing double boost. With Guts and Choice Band active, your attack rises to a whopping 33, which combines with a STAB Facade or Brave Bird for obscene amounts of power. Choice Scarf works similarly, but instead gives the power of a Choice Bander with the speed of a Choice Scarfer. The choice between Brave Bird and Pluck is the same as in the other set. For this set, Return will give more powerful non-recoil STAB if you fail to activate Guts. STAB Quick Attack allows the Banded Guts CB Swellow to hit immensely hard with Priority. Pursuit is preferred on the Scarf varieties, as it threatens things that it formerly didn't before, such as Abra and Gastly. Other Options Not much. It can use 21 HP to Substitute down to 1 HP and Endeavor with a Pinch Berry. Sleep Talk can allow it to absorb Sleep for Guts, but Facade isn't boosted by Sleep. Steel Wing can be used to hit Rock-types, but is hard to find a place for. One can also put Agility in place of Protect for an insanely fast attacker with great offenses, but Taillow has trouble buying enough time to get in an Agility. EVs Everything it's got sucks but its Attack and its Speed. Toss 236 into each one and drop the remaining 36 into its HP. Opinion It's fast, and it hits like a Choice Bander without being stuck with a single attack. Its Speed is great, and it's got some high-powered STAB to back up its Guts-boosted Attack. However, its defenses are utter trash, and priority chops it to bits. The attack Brave Bird suits it- It'll hit damn hard, but have fun cleaning up the aftermath. Counters Gastly and Misdreavus are immune to the powerful Facades that it fires, and can come in and proceed to Thunderbolt the bird into oblivion. Rock-types with high Defense such as Rhyhorn and Onix resist both of Taillow's STABs, and can use their STAB attacks to thrash it swiftly. Shieldon can do the same, but with a 4x resistance to Normal and Flying, a 2x resistance to U-Turn, and an Ice Beam that quickly does the job. Bronzor resists everything that Taillow throws at it, and forces it to U-Turn out. As for revenge killing, anything Scarfed generally does the trick- Taillow's status or its use of Brave Bird will quickly whittle it down, allowing most any Scarfed opponents or Priority moves to eliminate it. Just watch out for Quick Attack with some of the frailer Priority variants. Edited by Seven Deadly Sins, Jun 26 2008, 10:28 PM.

Typo in the Counters section. Should read "Gastly," not "Gengar." |

Counters NEEDs to mention Bronzor. For the CB set, you should not switch Taillow into thunderwave cos that makes it utterly useless. Just say if you get hit by WoW or Toxic, you will get an amazing double boost. And endeavour set could be good, its not a gimmick as such, and taillow does get quick attack. also mention agility in other opts |

Thunderwave doesn't make Taillow useless because of STAB Guts CB Quick Attack. I forgot about Agility for Taillow, it could be useful in place of Protect on the Guts set. I guess I can throw Bronzor into counters. Endeavor is too gimmicky for me, but if anyone can suggest a good set and spread for it, I'd be happy to incorporate it into the analysis. |

Would it be possible to put this (and other analysis you have done) in the normal Smogon format? http://www.smogon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=819141&postcount=7 The []'s around specific bits and the [SET] name: move 1: move 2: move 3: move 4: bit is different from how you do it. this also goes for any analysis in Completed Analysis. HP Fight or Ground could be an option to help with Aron/Shieldon/Onix ect.. Edited by eric the espeon, Jul 20 2008, 01:19 PM.

You need to put Aron into counters since he does everything sheildon can and kill Tailow with Rock Slide.
