[STAT=Smoochum, 45/30/15/85/65/65,Ice,Psychic]238[/STAT] [ABILITY]Oblivious[/ABILITY] OR [ABILITY]Forewarn[/ABILITY] [SET] name: Choice move 1: Ice Beam move 2: Hidden Power Fighting move 3: Trick move 4: Psychic / Shadow Ball item: Choice Scarf / Choice Specs evs: 240 SpA / 240 Spe nature: Modest / Timid [SET COMMENTS]
Possessing a powerful 19 Special Attack and 16 Speed, Choice items complement Smoochum very nicely. Ice Beam is the prime source of damage, and gives good coverage, not to mention being a very powerful attack. Hidden Power Fighting pairs very nicely with Ice Beam, hitting Dark-types, Steel-types and Munchlax super-effectively. Trick is mainly here to cripple the likes of Munchlax and Bronzor, who would both otherwise render this set completely useless. Psychic provides a strong secondary STAB, which is always nice. For those who prefer to have coverage to STAB, you can instead chose Shadow Ball, which gives you a super-effecctive hit on both Slowpoke and Spoink. Despite the fact that Slowpoke and Spoink resist all of your attacks, Psychic is still preferred because neither of them enjoy getting a Choice item, especially Choice Scarf.
[SET] name: SubSmooch move 1: Substitute move 2: Calm Mind move 3: Ice Beam move 4: Hidden Power Fighting item: Salac Berry evs: 240 SpA / 240 Spe nature: Modest / Timid [SET COMMENTS]
Behind a Substitute Smoochum can become a huge threat, as it essentially gives it an extra life. Combine this with the Speed boost a Salac Berry can provide Smoochum can wreak havoc on weakened or unprepared teams.

Substitute is here to get you down into pinch berry range, which will give you an invaluable Speed boost, and also to protect you from priority attacks, which would otherwise shut this set down. The attack-type combo Ice/Fighting offers the best two-move coverage Smoochum has access to, resisted only by the afformentioned Slowpoke, Spoink and Tentacool. Calm Mind boosts your already great Special Attack to deadly levels, and makes you able to take Special attacks better.

With Calm Mind boosting your Special Attack, a Modest Nature isn’t really needed, and Timid becomes a viable option, outspeeding 16 Speed scarfers after a Salac boost.
[OTHER OPTIONS]
Smoochum has no other notable special-attacking options, however it does have a few interesting support options. It possesses both Light Screen and Reflect allowing for a Dual Screen set, however it should be noted that Smoochum has horrible physical defense making this kind of set rather unviable. Smoochum also has access to Wish, allowing it to support his teammates by healing them. Also, thanks to her horrible physical bulk most physical attacks can OHKO her making a Counter set potentially deadly. It could even make use of this strategy as a lead, using Fake-Out to break Sashes.

If you use Smoochum alongside Snover you can replace Ice Beam with Blizzard on either of the sets.
[EVs]
You only need to maximize Speed and Special Attack, both of which requiring 236 EVs, and with the sets using Hidden Power Fighting, which requires you lowering your Speed and Special Attack IVs, you need to add 4 EVs into both of those stats. This unfortunately leaves no room for raising your other stats.
[OPINION]
Between its decent Speed and great Special Attack Smoochum can be quite a force to reckon with, however Smoochum has a severe case of an inferiority complex. With Abra being able to run both of the main sets that Smoochum can, but also possessing higher stats, it is generally a better choice. Despite this it still a very potent force, its Ice Beam denting anything that doesn’t resist it. It’s a shame that it can’t access its level up moves, most disappointingly Sing, due to it being a female only species.
[COUNTERS]
Munchlax takes virtually all of Smoochum’s attacks with barely a mark (except a Hidden Power Fighting boosted by Specs or Calm Mind), and can OHKO Smoochum as well. Bronzor is also able to take its attack relatively easily, not to mention it resists both of Smoochum's STAB attacks. Both of the afformentioned Pokemon need to be cautioned about Trick, which really lowers both of their walling abilities.

Walls aside, Smoochum is very succeptible to priority, in turn making it easily revenge killed. Houndour is the best revenge killer in Smoochum's case, resisting Ice Beam and being immune to Psychic, as well as being able to OHKO with Sucker Punch and making Smoochum scared to switch with Pursuit. Many other Pokemon are able to do similar things, such as Diglett with Sucker Punch, and many Pokemon with a strong Bullet Punch. Also, Gastly and Misdreavus outspeed non-scarfed Smoochum and can OHKO with their STAB Ghost attacks, including Shadow Sneak.
Edited by TPM, May 18 2009, 03:11 PM.

If Lovely Kiss is legal, it needs a slot...everywhere! Sleep inducing moves 75 accuracy + are really almost always worth a moveslot. |

Removed alot of stuff, added Choice Specs, and fixed alot of stuff as well. The Blizzard thing should be added in OO.

Actually this is pretty good overall, much better than eggy. still a quite few things though.

I would also suggest taking Shadow Ball to SC. Having an extra STAB move is pretty vital, and Shadow Ball is only needed for a few Pokemon. This would require some rewriting of SCs. The sub set needs to mention that it lets you beat Sucker Punchers, one of the main attractions. You say sing is not legal, which is not the same as specified in the workshop: http://s1.zetaboards.com/The_Little_Cup_Forum/single/?p=50345&t=728496 The lead set you talk about in OO actually sounds reasonably viable, and different from what other Pokemon can do. Maybe: [SET] name: Lead move 1: Fake Out / Sing move 2: Counter move 3: Ice Beam move 4: Psychic / Hidden Power Fighting item: Focus Sash nature: Hasty FO and Sing are illegal together sadly. Protect would be mentioned in SC to beat Meowth and Aipom. Its one of the few leads who is immune to hail. |

I do not know (and can't find one right now), but if that's right the list needs updating. Will look more carefully when not half asleep. |

Changed Psychic to main option on Choice set, however it made the Set Comments hard to write, so if anybody has any ideas for that, please share. |
