I've chosen for my first team in Little Cup battling to be a sandstorm team since I have quite some experience with such teams. I think this team may actually run smoother than a normal OU team because I managed to eliminate the two worst ground weaknesses, water and grass. Water is absorbed by Croagunk and quite a number of pokemon couldn't care less about grass on my team. All the EVs and movesets come from the workshops, but I also went through all the EVs together with the EV guide posted to get more of a feel for them and they are indeed perfect. This team has already won me two battles and if it weren't for the fact that I got totally confused when battling Eric's Wynaut (Sucker Punching a Wynaut anyone? >.<), I would've finished that match even easier. ![]() My team at a glance: Without much further ado, I present to you my first team. Have fun rating. Hippopotas @ Lum Berry Ability: Sandstream Nature: Impish EVs: 212 HP / 100 Atk / 132 Def / 20 SpD / 20 Spe - Stealth Rock - Earthquake - Rock Slide - Crunch My lead and sandstorm starter. Lum Berry is because Ponyta might try to hypnotize me. I score a clean kill on both Ponyta and Voltorb with Earthquake and a OHKO on Ghastly with Crunch. After the lead is done, I set up SR and switch to an opponent or go out by killing myself while inflicting some damage. Gligar @ Life Orb Ability: Hyper Cutter Nature: Adamant EVs: 236 Atk / 236 Spe - Swords Dance - Earthquake - Stone Edge - Quick Attack My main physical attacker as well as just a very straightforward method of attacking. QuakeEdge has very good neutral coverage and after a Swords Dance, I can make up for the little lack of speed by using Quick Attack to sometimes even OHKO foes who don't resist normal attacks. Cacnea @ Bright Powder Ability: Sand Veil Nature: Adamant EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe - Substitute - Focus Punch - Sucker Punch - Swords Dance Is a bit the same as Gligar but plays quite a bit more defensive. Defensive in LC? Yes, Bright Power + Sand Veil + Substitute is a very big life insurance. Measure in the fact that if I could set this up on a free turn, I have all the freedom to launch heavy hitting Focus Punches from behind my Sub and also don't have to worry about my Sucker Punch being outsped. If I feel like a champ, I can even throw in a SD to boost my attack to a very high level, pretty much owning everything from behind the safety of my sub. Anorith @ Choice Scarf Ability: Battle Armor Nature: Adamant EVs: 236 Atk / 28 Def / 236 Spe - Rock Slide - X-Scissor - Body Slam - Brick Break This guy makes a nice revenge killer. It's Choice Scarf will put it ahead of any non-boosted pokemon at 25 speed. It's move provide nice enough coverage. Omanyte @ Life Orb Ability: Swift Swim Nature: Modest EVs: 36 Def / 200 SpA / 236 Spe IVs: 27 HP / 30 Atk / 30 SpA - Surf - Ice Beam - Hidden Power Grass - Rock Polish Omanyte is my main special sweeper. Swift Swim is chosen as an ability if my Sandstorm team suddenly faces a Rain dance team, meaning I won't have to use Rock Polish. If there isn't any rain available, Rock Polish puts me at 26 speed, even outspeeding base 75s with a scarf. Water/Grass/Ice has impeccable coverage and grass is chosed to have a viable way to deal with waters (espacially in said rain dance). Croagunk @ Life Orb Ability: Dry Skin Nature: Rash EVs: 108 Atk / 188 SpA / 196 Spe - Nasty Plot - Vacuum Wave - Shadow Ball - Sucker Punch Croagunk is mainly chosen to fit my team as a water counter. Unlike Omanyte who won't mind a water switching into him, he can't be brought in as a counter either, being neutral to water attacks. Croagunk on the other hand heals from their attacks, which stops it cold. The ice and grass/electricity attacks on most water pokemon also have little chance against me so I can expect a switch which benefits me greatly since a Nasty Plot with a STAB Vacuum Wave will wreak havoc. Throw in a Sucker Punch to hit on the other side of the spectrum and I won't expect to be taking any hits except from pokemon faster than me also using a priority move. Normally, I would include a threat list here, but I'm new to this entire metagame so that's why I'm actually putting this up for rate. I think I went over most of the OU analysis' sets to see what most of the OU pokemon can theoretically do, but that isn't worth anything. There is a good chance that I've created a big hole in this team where some pokemon could just have a field day. I hope you can help me fix such problems. Edited by Yllnath, Feb 5 2009, 04:14 PM.

Back. Will see in the next week or so how much I can contribute.

On your Hippopotas, I don't think you will use Rock Slide much so you may want to try out Protect to keep Return Meowth from beating you, especially without Oran. Gligar is fine but go Jolly, you will want that chance to tie with Misdreavus, Magby, Meowth and the like. Try Roost over Quick Attack so Bronzor isn't just stalling you with LO damage and Gyro Ball. Croagunk's Sucker Punch + Shadow Ball seems a little redundant to me as well, what about HP Psychic for a quick hit on other Croagunk as well as Koffing. Overall solid but a Bulk Up Buizel as well as Squirtle to a lesser extent weak. Buizel creams Hippopotas with Waterfall, Aqua Jets Anorith (likely OHKOs after one bulk up), outspeeds and Waterfalls Gligar and Omanyte too. Your two best bets won't be taking +1 Returns or Ice Punches. I'd say that Anorith is a liability in this team since it's not a terribly effective revenge killer, being trapped by Diglett and isn't abusing the Sand enough, try something like Scarf Psyduck or even Staryu to help deal with Buizel and other waters whilst retaining revenge killing capabilities. |

Ok, we discussed this all at great length on shoddy but my recommendations in short: More SpD EVs on Hippo so it can take on special leads and get SR down. Oran>LO on Gligar. Double Edge (or Return)>Body Slam on Anorith. Edit: Dixie posted while I had the post window open. Edited by eric the espeon, Feb 5 2009, 07:05 PM.

I do like to say that most waters that don't come in with Psychic moves will be dealt with by croagunk. On Gligar, I'll be running an Oran berry, to make sure I get a SD in, but isn't quick attack more useful then, as QA after a +2 Gligar is quite a serious punch? I'll definetely try that HP psychic on Croagunk though, it would be nice to stop other Croagunk. Then again, wouldn't a HP Grass or Elec not suit me better to actually hit the waters I'm supposed to wall? (Also, I got that moveset from an existing analysis, which also might need adjusting then?) I'll give Anorith some thought seeing as both Dixie and Eric had comments on it and see if I can find a better Scarfer. Thanks for the comments |
