[STAT=Chinchou,75/38/38/56/56/67,Water,Electric]170[/STAT] [SET] name: Parafusion move 1: Thunderbolt / Discharge move 2: Surf move 3: Thunder Wave / Ice Beam move 4: Confuse Ray evs: 236 HP / 228 SpD item: Oran Berry nature: Calm ability: Volt Absorb [SET COMMENTS]
A simple set that lets Chinchou make use of its numerous resistances to common special attacks (Surf, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Flamethrower in particular) along with good HP and Special Defense. Thunder Wave, followed up with Confuse Ray will make the opponent do nothing 5 times out of 8. This bys you a very good chance of a free switch-in; the odds are increased a bit as some opponents will be switching out to nullify Confusion.

Thunderbolt and Surf take advantage of Chinchou's great dual STAB moves. Surf also has the advantage of OHKOing many Pokemon with a STAB Earthquake in Little Cup; predicting switches is the key to using Chinchou.

A slight variation is to use Discharge. While Discharge only paralyzes 30% of the time, it essentially serves the same purpose as Thunder Wave and Thunderbolt in one. That leaves a slot open, which is promptly filled with Ice Beam to get a good hit on everything Grass- and Dragon-types. It is less reliable in terms of pulling off Parafusion, but has much better coverage.
[SET] name: Choice move 1: Thunderbolt move 2: Surf / Hydro Pump move 3: Ice Beam move 4: Hidden Power Grass evs: 60 Def / 228 SAtk / 220 Spd item: Choice Specs / Choice Scarf nature: Modest / Timid ability: Volt Absorb [SET COMMENTS]
The theory here is that an experienced battler will be switching out what Chinchou walls in favor of something that immediately threatens Chinchou, thus forcing the electric fish to switch out. Since you're jumping around all the time, you might as well be jumping around with 24 Special Attack and 16 Speed combined with one of the best special attacking movesets in Little Cup. Chinchou quickly becomes the best Chinchou counter in the game, hitting with a swift Hidden Power Grass to severely hurt it plus even has Volt Absorb to gain a Thunder Wave immunity.

Resistances to common priority attacks such as Bullet Punch, Aqua Jet and Ice Shard combined with great coverage and decent Speed means that Chinchou can also run an effective Choice Scarf set, in which case a Modest nature is advisable unless you are desperate to tie with Choice Scarfed Mankey and Gastly.
[SET] name: Rain Set Up move 1: Rain Dance move 2: Surf / Hydro Pump move 3: Thunder move 4: Ice Beam evs: 148 SpA / 68 SpD / 220 Spe item: Damp Rock nature: Timid / Modest ability: Volt Absorb [SET COMMENTS]
Chinchou is invaluable in a Rain Dance team, due to its ability to sponge Electric-attacks as well as being able to take boosted Water attacks from your opponent if your strategy backfires. Chinchou's general special bulk and resistances also means that it is a reliable choice to set up Rain and can abuse it with both STABs, becoming a threat once it has been set up, with two 120 Base Power attack moves in Hydro Pump and Thunder allowing you to hit hard before going down, to allow your next sweeper to come in. Hence, a faster and more offensive EV spread is chosen.
[SET] name: Agility Sweep move 1: Agility move 2: Surf / Hydro Pump move 3: Thunderbolt move 4: Ice Beam / Hidden Power Grass evs: 228 SpA / 220 Spe item: Life Orb nature: Modest ability: Volt Absorb [SET COMMENTS]
This Chinchou is designed to get the jump on opponents that rely on Diglett to counter it, 16 speed before an Agility means that it will outspeed even Jolly Choice Scarf Diglett, and by extension all other scarfers. Nor should you underestimate the power of this Chinchou, it hits as hard as Timid Staryu with the same resistances to priority attacks but with immunity to Thunderwave and STAB on Thunderbolt. However, Staryu doesn't face the dilemma of Ice Beam and Hidden Power Grass, the former hitting Dragon- and Grass-types whilst Hidden Power Grass is needed for Super Effective damage on opposing Chinchou and Wooper.
[Other Options]
Chinchou actually has a decent physical movepool with Waterfall, Return, Sucker Punch, and Bounce providing ample coverage although don't bother with that 38 Base Attack with a superior Special Attack and Special movepool. Signal Beam is usable to hit Grass-types but Ice Beam is more powerful and is hence superior unless you fear Snover greatly. If you wanted to stat-up, you could probably find use for Amnesia and Charge. Finally, Shed Shell is an option for Diglett.
[Opinion]
Chinchou is one of the best defensive Pokémon in Little Cup, its resistances so often come to the rescue to stop many sweepers. Chinchou popularized Hidden Power Grass on Electrics and Waters, which means they can't touch Grass-types or Mantyke respectively as well. Chinchou is great all-round Pokémon.
[Counters]
Luckily, Chinchou has a mediocre Defense stat and a weakness to Earthquake. Any set lacking Hidden Power Grass promptly loses to Wooper, who is immune to both STABs as well as Thunderwave to stop Parafusion. Any faster Ground-type Pokemon (read: Gligar) can come in on Thunderbolt and OHKO. Primarily, Diglett can trap, laugh and OHKO with Earthquake but is OHKOed by Surf on the switch and may be surprised by an Agility set.
Many Grass-types work as counters to the standard set with their STAB SE moves like Seed Bomb, however they must be wary of Ice Beam unless named Snover.

Offensive Chinchou are walled by Munchlax, although switching it in into boosted Surf and Thunderbolt can be a pain for it. Munchlax will win one-on-one however with a strong Earthquake. Ironically, other Chinchou can wall it, when without Hidden Power Grass.
Edited by eric the espeon, Apr 17 2009, 12:58 PM.

Suggestions: How about splitting parafusion and tank sets? You would end up with something like: name: Parafusion move1: Discharge / Thunderbolt (maybe remove Thunderbolt) move2: Surf move3: Thunder Wave / Ice Beam move4: Confuse Ray name: Tank move1: Thunderbolt move2: Surf move3: Ice Beam move4: Substitute / HP Grass / Thunder Wave If those two sets are two similar for your liking then they could be merged into something like this: name: Parafusion Tank move1: Discharge / Thunderbolt move2: Surf move3: Confuse Ray / Ice Beam move4: Thunder Wave / Substitute / HP Grass With the first options being for hax, and the later ones being more direct. Sub looks like a nice way to scout switches, particularly Diglett ones, without having to Surf. Chin has enough power to dent most things but often has to hit them with the right move, and forces a lot of switches. Choice: fine. Rain: Under Rain Hydro Pump has more than 12 Base power, and you are not going to use Thunder outside rain so the "two 120 BP moves" is slightly misleading, only slightly though and I can't think how to word it better so fine. Maybe add Oran as a second item to let you set up (admittedly shorter) rain against stronger opponents? Agility is good. OO: How about adding a mention of Protect for general scouting on the Tankish set? And if you don't want Sub on any of the sets its at least worth putting here IMO. Opinion could do with some improvements. Its a bit overly focused on what Chin can do and, I think, overestimates it a bit. Chin is a great Pokemon thanks to its cool resistances, and packs a punch but saying that: "Chinchou is one of the most important Pokémon in Little Cup." and "Chinchou is amazing." may be going too far. It needs to say why Chin is not at the very to of usage stats, its all round decent but not outstanding stats, its major problem with Diglett and the fact that it gets walled. Yes its great at what it does (tanking hits from a group of sweepers with its lovely resists), but you need to play it carefully as many non resisted hits will 2KO. Counters is good. Overall, very good but Opinion needs some work. Edit: ModestRaikou On most Pokemon it would be, but Chin has enough defenses to avoid getting 1KOd by most things, however its probably worth putting in Other Options. I don't see the point in splitting up the tank set because using a tank set without parafusion means that you are a lot less annoying and easier to take on. There's no real need for HP Grass or Sub on the tank set since you want to take hits rather than get the jump on other Chinchou or scout, unless you are afraid of Diglett. I don't think Oran is needed on Chinchou since with 17 speed and good defenses you should be able to rain dance 99.9% of the time. I don't really like Sub or Protect on the tank set; EQ is obvious from Gligar, Bronzor and co. Will rewrite opinion later. |

Ok, how about putting Sub in Other Options? Something like: "Substitute can help to scout switches on the Parafusion set if you don't like relying on luck." And Oran on the Rain Dancer is nice as it lets you switch in on those things that do ~75% or more and get rain up (or get rain up multiple times/last longer once rain is up), this would avoid the need to sacrifice one of your other Pokemon. I think its worth putting as an option. Also a little mention on the rain dancer that you can opt for a more defensive EV spread, but will be much less of a threat once rain is up would be nice. |

Grammatical Nitpicks: - It's special attacker and special bulk, not Special attacker. - Use the comma before the "and" or "or", like Jane, Dick, or Tom. - I also prefer using "move 1" over "move1". Otherwise, this was really good quality, and informative. Approved. |

Well, since I've been looking through all these old analysises might as well mention something. The only Pokemon in LC that get Air Slash are either bad (Wingull, Pidgey, Hoothoot, Zubat), have better things to do (Taillow) or banned (Scyther). |

mk, changing that bit slightly. Surf, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, and Air Slash in particular to Surf, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Flamethrower in particular |
