Lincoln-class Exploration-Multirole
Posted Image
The RSS Elysia, Lincoln prototype, from the Navy Factbook, 2430.

Originally concieved for military scouting work on the Fringe, the Lincoln class was first proposed at the annual Cooperation in Defense Naval Power convention in Rome in 2405. It was thought that a paramilitary armed exploration ship unlike the Trailblazer-class of earlier days would be a more capable vessel for work in and beyond the Fringe. Before the Koltsovs, the most looming military threats to the Republic were possible terrorist cells in the Fringe, which most commonly worked among the shattered asteroids of systems bordering the Mataran Nebula.

The Lincoln class would, in operation, scout through Fringe space and work with local populations to identify terrorist cells through its diplomatically-skilled ground teams. Should it come under attack by local forces or terrorist elements, it could defend itself with up to six interceptors and atmospheretic shuttles or its four K60 split-missile packages. The Navy brass were impressed, and ten were ordered in 2407. The RSS Elysia - prototype of its class - moved to the active duty roster in 2410. By 2419, twenty Lincoln-class Multiroles were in service with the Interstellar Navy. One year later, the Koltsov War broke out. The War saw the Lincoln class on the front line in several occasions, securing Fringe space from Koltsov scouting forces during the Battle of New Haven and Johnson's Skirmish in 2423 and 2427, respectively. In the latter, the RSS Trafalgar and RSS Kaplan were damaged beyond repair - the only Lincoln class vessels destroyed by enemy action in class history.

Post-war and beyond, the Lincoln-class resumes its old role of scouting the Fringe while assuming another - being the de facto exploration ship of the Rimor Orbis by exploring yet uncolonized star systems for the Republic. Interceptors are more frequently traded for shuttles and troop transports, the latter being wholly more needed when operating in the Fringe or exploring new planetoids. The Lincoln's stellar sensor package, still outstripping any other Navy vessel by far, consists of high and low band EM, radar, spectroscopic and telescopic imaging for stellar cartography and object identification. Six Lincolns currently serve in the exploration role with the Rimor Orbis.
