LIBEL LAWS ABET CORRUPTION IN GOVERNMENT

Why is there so much corruption in our country nowadays? There are plenty of reasons why this is so, but for a group of mediamen led by lawyer Bertini "Toto" Causing, corruption thrives because people are afraid to speak out against the corrupt and the abusive for fear of being harassed with libel suits.

Having equated the present libel law with corruption, Causing and his group called "Repeal the Criminal Libel Law Now!", are asking senators led by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and House of Representatives Speaker Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte, both certified mediamen, to push for the decriminalization of libel.

Below is a manifesto posted by Causing in the Internet, seeking one million signatures from the public in support of removing libel from our criminal law statutes:

-ooo-

ONE MILLION SIGNATURES TO REPEAL LIBEL LAW SOUGHT
EMPOWER THE PEOPLE, SIGN PETITION TO REPEAL CRIMINAL LIBEL LAW

To: Members in Repeal the Criminal Libel Law!

Hello patriot: I am appealing to you to sign the Petition to the Philippine Congress for the repeal of the criminal libel law to empower the people to speak against evil societies.

Please sign the petition by clicking this site:

Your signature is but one, but when it becomes one with millions of others, it will be a Powerful One for the People.

"After signing it, please invite your friends and the people you know to sign the petition. If the number of signatures reaches One Million, we will submit this to the Senate of the Philippines and the House of Representatives.

Respectfully yours,
Berteni `Toto' Cataluña Causing; Call to Action
Support the cause. Be counted…"

You can never see the effects of this proposal until you get into a situation where this repeal would really matter.
