Gibo is top choice of UP students in mock polls By Julie M. Aurelio Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 22:49:00 12/17/2009 From: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/metro/view/20091217-242623/Gibo-is-top-choice-of-UP-students-in-mock-polls MANILA, Philippines -- Despite his poor showing in surveys, administration candidate Gilberto Teodoro emerged as the top choice among students of the University of the Philippines in mock elections held recently on campus in Diliman, Quezon City. Teodoro, a former defense secretary, got 1,669 votes out of the total 6,604 students who participated in the elections held from Dec. 8 to 11. It was the second leg of the Alpha Sigma fraternity’s Boto ng Mga Iskolar ng Bayan, which earlier held the first mock polls in September. In the first mock elections, then presidential wannabe Sen. Francis Escudero proved to be the top choice among UP students at that time as he had not yet withdrawn from the race. But in last week’s mock elections, Teodoro emerged as the winner over Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino. Aquino got only 1,481 votes, followed by Sen. Manny Villar who received 577 votes. “I think that shows that students are thinking out of the box, that even if President Macapagal-Arroyo is unpopular, it does not rub off on Gibo. There’s no bandwagon effect,” said fraternity spokesperson Lauryel Castillo. He said Teodoro may have convinced the students through his “well thought” answers in presidential forums held in schools and universities in Metro Manila. Fraternity brother Mark Aguimatang noted that Teodoro was able to articulate himself well and gave concrete answers within the given time limit in such forums. “We also have to remember that Escudero eventually dropped out of the race, so he is not among those considered in our mock elections. That’s a big factor,” Castillo added. Asked why Aquino came in second place, Aguimatang said: “Maybe because he is perceived to be trying to get the sympathy votes; the Hacienda Luisita issue is also not helping him. But we did not include the voters’ reasons for choosing a candidate.” |
