AFTER THE MASSACRE at Amritsar, Mahatma Gandhi said to British officials led by the viceroy of India:
Quote:

I beg you to accept that there is no people on earth who wouldn’t prefer their own bad government to the good government of an alien power.

About 10 years earlier, a Filipino said basically the same thing:
Quote:

"I prefer a government run like hell by Filipinos to a government run like heaven by Americans." It was a sound bite heard around the world. But what all too few recalled was the essential sentence that came next: “Because, however bad a Filipino government might be, we can always change it."

These words was said by Pres. Manuel L. Quezon.

Grizwald said in Tagpuan:
Quote:

I'd rather have the Americans run this country for awhile until all the negative culture, practices, and flawed ways that we, Filipinos, have so entrenched in our society, become just a faint memory. A lot of good it got us having Cory as our president. NOT! We made her president because we were so emotionally attached to her. Imagine if we replaced Marcos with someone more deserving? Who knows what would have happened to our economy and to our Constitution. With Cory as President, our economy worsened and corruption did not end. But Filipinos have a very short memory. This coming presidential election, history is about to repeat itself. And according to current polls, we are doomed to repeat it. Bayan ko, kawawa ka naman.

Do you agree with Pres. Quezon or with Grizwald? Would you prefer a government run like hell by Pinoys than a government run like heaven by Americans? There's so many of you complaining so much about PGMA. The way some of you complain you give outsiders or foreigners the impression that the Philippines is another Bangladesh or Mogadishu or Haiti, not a tropical paradise. I also admit that during Marcos time, it was hellish for a lot of Filipinos. And then came Pres. Cory. The economy never improved or if it did, it didn't make a lot of difference for many. And according to a UP professor, what happened during Cory's time made the economy worse in following years after her presidency. ERAP's time was no party either which ended with People Power 2 or EDSA DOS. Bottom line is would you rather have these type of leaders all over again or have the Americans set things straight for us?

So many of our people love to complain. Perhaps we should try having the Americans fix things here so they will see the difference between having our own people lead and fix the country or having the Americans do it for us.
Elitism does not depend on wealth, but on mindset.

I'd rather have the Americans run our government. We have a lot to learn from them, from their experience, from how they do things and from the systems that they put in place. But then we have Duterte now. What I'm afraid of is what will happen when Duterte steps down? Balik ba tayo sa dating gawi, a govt run by corrupt people, dishing selective justice, palakasan, at palpak na sistema? At least with the Americans, they're very consistent. And what works for them remains in place or intact.
