![]() Three millennia ago, humanity suffered a cataclysm that shook it to its very foundations. Those few who survived the First Interplanetary War found their most cherished notions-democracy, liberty, the rule of law-to be worthless, and traded it like so much pottage for security, bound up in the rule of men. This notion-that the government of a galaxy can and should rest upon the shoulders of a single man-endured for millennia. Not because it was superior, but because it was legitimate enough. For legitimacy rests upon two things: the ability to enforce edicts, and the consent of the governed. The Emperors had fleets, divisions, and usually the wisdom not to test the limits of despotism beyond the Oort Cloud. So he could enforce his edicts, and the governed, lightly burdened, largely consented to galactic despotism. This legitimacy was stripped away in the Fall. We lost an Emperor but gained a pretender to his throne on Secunda and a would-be military junta on 21 Delsanjo. There was no Emperor with writ to enforce, no real fleet to enforce nonexistent writ. If there is no ability to enforce the Edictus, then there is no legitimate claim to govern the Edictus. Furthermore, if all humans were created equal, then all humans should be co-rulers, and any government lacking the direct participation of the governed ought to be deprived of the willing consent of its governed. We, the united Worlds of Altair, in committees corresponding, do hereby proclaim our equality to Earth, and to 21 Delsanjo, and to Secunda, and to any other populated world or sovereign political entity. We insist that we will not be bound by federal Edictus laws, and our relationship to Earth is that of close ally and friend, not of master and servant. Earth has given us little reason to complain, yet we stand in dumbstruck awe at the legions of Arthran and Kantus who would kill and die at the whims of their "throne worlds," and so must clarify our stance. The proclamations and doings of our respected ally President Nethun are not necessarily our own. We submit to the concept of a confederate Edictus of sovereign worlds, but no longer to the concept of a sovereign Edictus with a single sovereign leader. The Edictan President is a symbolic head of state of our confederacy, not a ruler. The Minutemen Marine does not march at her words, and the Sons of Liberty do not lend their support to her orders, unless we separately first grant our assent. tl;dr: SoL's in the Edictus but we don't go to war on Earth's say-so. This has no effect on our membership in AGE. |

About damn time, to hell with Earth.. Why should my children die for the whims of a madman a 1000 or so lightyears away? I fight for my world and my people, but no way am I going to fight for a madman safely tucked away on a planet I've never even seen. |

Your treaties state otherwise, vermin. Not that anyone would be surprised by any world or alliance claiming to be Edictus reneging on treaty agreements over foolish sophistries like "feeling" and "equality". |

We will stand in defense against those who we are allied with, however, the orders from Earth shall fall upon uninterested ears. |

Consent of the governed? Do we consent to where we are born and raised by our parents? No, we cannot consent. Yet this is reason enough to be marked as a citizen subject to being conscripted, often in the ancient French fashion. Ideal democracy, by design, is a tyranny of 51% incapable of protecting the minority from the majority. Each of us must be allowed to choose our society uncompromised since consent of the governed is not simply consent of the majority of them. - Choice: an Antidoctrine Edit: Choice and consent are part of the core principals of Umbrionage. lrn2history, if you were born in France and left immediately without gaining French citizenship, they could still conscript you.
