January, 1803 With Jannisary forces becoming increasingly less effective in battle with higher wages, lessened training programs, the removal of fitness tests, and their abandonment of being the main fighting forces in favor of being political and economic powers, Sultan Selim III continues to push his agenda to reform the military along Western lines and to begin reforming the Ottoman Empire as a whole to keep up with the rapidly advancing Europe. To this end, and to not upset the power Jannisary Korps, he has ordered some of his top trusted Generals in the regular Army to Cyprus outside the town of Nicosia. This provided the secluded location where he could begin training a new 'European' Army without the prying eyes of the political opposition from becoming wise. Through an elaborate system of recruiting for troops to be 'construction laborers' in Mesopotamia and Syria, nearly 5,000 men were recruited from muslim families in Anatolia and Rumelia and transported via ships to Cyprus. A new law was also enacted by the Sultan stating that Ottoman infantry and irregulars in the Army (not including the Jannisaries) will between 1804-1806 have to enter 'retraining' to raise their combat effectiveness and refresh their knowledge on the art of warfare. |
