Raab cleared his throat, the sound turning guttural and metallic in the reverberations caused by his suit.

“I believe I'm best qualified to answer that question, Tothin. You see...

Long ago, this land was beautiful, I've been told. Fertile, verdant, an endless sprawl of lush grass and serenity. A few simple people lived here, leading simple lives. As records tell, Marvin's father was a blacksmith. Adrian's was a banker. Life continued simply until a man named Sauvin Daguerro arrived by boat. He brought with him a veritable platoon of smog-belching iron behemoths, each one carrying a simple regimen of people – soldiers, mostly. Also cooks, medics...your basic landing party. His boat traveled straight to the nucleus of this array of islands – to that point the island had remained unnamed, but the tree did not. The natives called it Yggdrasil, and believed its roots touched all corners of their land. One could scarcely blame them – the tree was larger than any documented before or since. It stood at roughly the size of what is now Babel's smallest skyscraper. Sauvin touted Elysium as a “tourist paradise” and began opening hotels all along the coast of the center island, and with them came massive ocean liners, traversing south down the Styx River and docking at major established ports in what is now Chevron. Further entrepreneurial activity followed this – cities began cropping up, and with them rose small businesses, which quickly ate each other (as businesses are wont to do).

As for Yggdrasil, it was as Jasper described it – as skyscrapers cropped up, not even the no-cutting order on the tree could stop the growth of Babel, or the death of Yggdrasil.

Business owners began giving less and less back. Soon enough over 95 percent of Saupolis lived in poverty, barely able to afford the food that they cooked, or the clothes that they stitched. Marvin instituted a group known as Black Star to fight back against this. It started simply – protests, picketing, some vandalism. The first attacks on business giants began after Lazlo joined in, suggesting the murder of the people who were causing all this pain – not for purposes of revolution, but because 'killing is what I do'. With the rise of killings came the rise of the Elephantine Guard, of which I am a Guardsman. Originally these soldiers were given full free will, but after it was discovered that the killer instinct of the soldiers was weak under this system, electric collars were installed in almost all suits. All but the Knights had close monitoring on their activities and would be shocked at the first sign of weakness. Out of fear, the Guard turned brutal. I myself was involved in...acts I am not proud of. Arrested protestors were summarily executed, refused trial or jury – we simply shot them through the temple, on the street. These injustices were the final straw – war was declared on the tyrannical rule of Julqq, aka Sauvin, who changed his name at a classified time for classified reasons.

This man...” Raab continued, motioning to Swan, who had just started dusting himself off again, “is an entity entirely separate from the revolution-”

“However, for the moment, we have the same ends,” Swan interjected, straightening his lapel, “Ladies, gentlemen, if you will indulge me for a second, I'd like to talk this through with you in-”

Before he could finish his sentence, Heatstroke again had him on his back on the floor and started slowly strangling him.

“No...” Marvin whispered, “Let him speak, Sacha.”

Heatstroke grunted and lifted Swan up by his throat.

"I'll let you speak. But I will not listen," he said, spitting in Swan's face and turning his back on him. Swan wiped the saliva off his mask.

“Thank you...I suppose. Ladies, gentlemen, if you'll please join me at the table, we have things that need discussing," he said, sitting at the head of the collapsible negotiation table.

While Rob/Raab was talking, Fas already knew the whole story and went over to Kradenosama. "Kradenosama," Fas began. "I'm sorry I've been mean to you. It's just that I've never really been out of Xiodar before and when I met you, you got me involved in this whole revolution thing."

"Actually, your boots did--" Kradenosama interrupted, raising a finger.

"Listen," Fas interrupted. "What I mean is, I'm sorry. I was mean to you, and we started off on the wrong foot to begin with. Tothin has a way of making me think about others. I am very serious and sometimes when others aren't, I want to make them because I feel like they should be. It helps me forget about the burden that I placed on myself by trying to force it onto others. In this case, it was you. I promise that I won't hit you anymore, and I'll try to not be angry at you, okay?"

Kradenosama nodded and adjusted his glasses, "I've lived for a long time, Fas, and I have never met someone like you. Additionally, I have met several people who have been far worse towards me than you have been. I forgive you, and I'll try to look at the world through your eyes more. I did not do that before, nor did I treat you as well as I probably should have. I know that now."

"You don't know how much that means to me, Kradenosama," Fas replied gratefully. "I just have one question. You have education in various fields. You probably have a doctorate in psychology, sociology, and a bunch of other things. If you knew all of those things, why didn't you treat me in the best way already? How did you not know from the beginning how to treat me?"

Kradenosama said in a low, serious voice, "There are some things books can't teach you."

Meanwhile, Tothin was listening to Rob/Raab's explanation.

"Oh," said Tothin. "Well, as long as I know that what I did was for a good cause I guess." He shrugged.

The Jaidi knight walked over and sat in a chair at the table where Swan was. He leaned back, put his hands behind his head, and put his feet up crossed on the table. "So...what's up?"

Xordra was still out of it, despite treatment from Soul. The diagnosis was that he was physically very healthy, but that his mind needed time to rest. Xordra was laid in the corner with his RELIC tucked safely in his robe pocket.

Gorgie was hesitant to sit down with Swan again. He remembered what had happened last time. Images of Lazlo resisting the negotiations and things turning violent. He knew he wasn't ready for any more fighting this time around. He needed to tighten most of his mechanical joints and his magic was nearly spent.

He sat down next to Tothin, feeling relieved that someone as confident as Tothin was able to be calm enough to prop his legs up and say "what's up".

Gorgie looked at Swan and said, "Before we begin, I'd like to know a little more about you. I don't mean to be rude, I'm just curious. You can say no."...

Swan cleared his throat, gently sweeping Tothin's feet off the table. "Sorry, it's just this is mahogany, and it's sort of...expensive."

"It's a little overcrowded in this room, I think. Let's clear it up some. Raab, you can go back to base, I already know you're allied elsewhere. Adrian, you're already under contract. Demo...just...go, please. And try not to break anything else!"

Raab saluted and marched out of the building. Adrian grunted and picked his way over the broken wall. Demo stood up, missing an arm, and grabbed Lazlo with his remaining arm. Eli started to stand up to protest, but Demo gave him a look of death.

"You're weak, kid. Even with one arm, I could still snap you in two. Or if not me, definitely my friend here. I'm taking the kid. This is not a point of negotiation."

Demo dragged Lazlo's bloodied corpse over the pile of bricks, leaving a blood trail out of the building.

Swan marveled at this strange sight, then snapped back to reality. He cleared his throat again, then placed a briefcase on the table, opening it and taking out a sheaf of papers. He passed one out to each person around the table. It was his resume.

"First of all, I'm sorry for my unfortunate entrance. I very much wanted Benji, and I feared you were going to kill him."

"If you're so well-connected, then how the hell did you not know that he's my uncle?" Marvin asked, rapping his knuckles on the table.

"We couldn't be sure of your motivations. I didn't come here to talk about this, can we please move on?

"Before I begin, I was asked to introduce myself. Well...I am Swan. I'm a business leader here in town and the leader of a private militia called the Clocksmiths. Our primary goal is the removal of power of that scoundrel Julqq. He's taken the city in the wrong direction, and he needs to be removed from power.

"My organization is well-connected and well-supplied, and we believe that your team has the sort of dynamism and ideological charge that we need to get this done. Time is of the essence. I believe we're both agreed on that point.

"So, before we move on to contractual things, how are we all so far on this? All in agreement?"

"Oh," said Tothin sheepishly as he removed his feet from the table. "Sorry about that. My bad." Now he leaned forward as he was unable to lean back anymore.

Kradenosama inspected the table and jotted down some things about it.

As Swan cleared out the room, Fas whispered to Tothin. "Are you sure you don't know what to do? If you aren't part of the Jaidi but stil use the light side of the force, shouldn't you just join the Sutrans?"

"I don't agree with the Sutrans on too many other things," Tothin responded. "Although they are kinda disorganized and I might be able to fit in, I don't want to support a group that has a different opinion than the Jaidi because I believe the Jaidi are correct and no one else. I do not like to be alone in my beliefs, and I want to support a good cause. Right now, all I am supporting is my own life and this revolution thing now."

"I see your point, but your other thing was should you continue to use the force. I would say 'yes'," Fas continued. "They can't stop you and how would they know if you did, anyway? It's part of who you are, and they should never take that away."

Tothin was about to agree, but stopped short to listen to what Swan had to say.

"Splendid!" exclaimed Kradenosama. "Yes, yes! I am in agreement. So we are fighting for the same thing. Terrific! We can all be friends now."

"It seems that way now, Kraden," Fas said. "But let's see what he wants in this 'contract' of his first. Let's see if he really is."

"Yeah, like I thought it was cool to put my feet up on this table but found out it wasn't," Tothin warned, half-seriously.

Kradenosama continued, "Speaking of which, where did you find this table? It's nice; I'd like to have one in my bachelor pad."

"Off topic, Kradenosama," Fas sighed.

"Oh right, my bad." Now it was Kradenosama's turn to be sheepish.

Gorgie was very moved by the realization that Swan was after the same thing: the removal of Julqq from power. He was about to say that he agreed to join Swan and his clocksmiths when Fas and Tothin gave their warnings. Gorgie looked over to Xordra's reclining form, unconscious in the corner. He knew that Xordra would have a much better idea of what to do in this situation, but it was up to him now. Xordra's idea of a global brotherhood to rid the world of corruption seemed to coincide nicely with Swan's plan to remove Julqq from power. He also wanted to prove to Xordra that he could make tough decisions too.

With all this going on in his head, Gorgie said, "I too am in agreement with you, Swan. But I will not sign anything until I know some more details. The most glaring one being that once Julqq is removed from power what do you plan to do with the South Pole? Obviously Julqq is a villain that must be removed, but how do we know that you aren't a villain in disguise?" Gorgie felt very proud of himself for erecting such a seemingly logical argument. He looked at Xordra's sleeping form and thought how proud his friend would be of his words when he told him upon waking….

A look entered Swan's face. One of hope and optimism, the kind of look a man develops after discovering his one true love in life. "What I want after Julqq is removed from power is freedom. I want every citizen in this country to be free to strive. To have the ability to move up in status with a little derring-do and some elbow grease. I want people to not live in the slums any more. I want to be as free to pursue my life goals as you will be to pursue yours. And my life goal, at the end of the day, is to give mankind freedom," Swan looked into space for a second, taking a deep victorious breath, before returning to his sermon.

"But enough about the future. I think you'll find there's plenty of time to deal with it. After all, that's why they call it the future!" Swan said, attempting a joke with the same amount of success as a blind man attempting to drive.

"I respect your friend here, I really do. But he doesn't have the means to do this himself. I think we all can attest to that. If we want to stand a chance against Julqq, we need to band together. I need you, and you need me. So what do you say? Do we have a deal?" Swan said, reaching his hand out to shake the metaphorical hands of all around the table.

Marvin cleared his throat and leaned forward, attempting to begin his rebuttal. Heatstroke lay his forearm across Marvin's chest. "There are times for heroes, but not now."

Heatstroke turned toward Swan, forearm still across Marvin's chest, keeping him from doing anything extreme. "We have a deal."

Kradenosama had finished gathering information on the polar icecaps and now could focus solely on the revolution. He had reasoned long ago that it was a good cause. He put away his notebook and scanned the resume that Swan had given to each of them. He was also glad that Heatstroke had made a decision. "Great!" Kradenosama exclaimed. "Now let's see what we can determine about this deal of yours. I'm just referring to the formalities of course." He could tell that Swan's intentions were genuine.

Fas was more skeptical. Heatstroke had never led them astray before and she had no reason not to trust Swan, yet she would not agree with him just yet. She wondered why she could not just accept the help. The desert nomad reasoned that it was probably because of her own past. They had trusted some to come to their aid when asked, but those that said they would did not. Fas gave a look to Tothin expressing her thoughts and shrugged.

Tothin gave a quick nod acknowledging that he understood. He turned to Heatstroke. "We're with you buddy," Tothin agreed, speaking for Fas. Then he turned to Swan. "But Fas and I can't find a reason to trust you. You say we have a common goal, but then why is it just now that you are considering to help us? Something's fishy, and it sure as heck isn't cod."

Fas shook her head and sighed. Tothin realized how lame his pun was too late, but shook off his sheepishness. Kradenosama had heard the joke before, but Tothin told it better so he laughed quietly to himself.

Fas chimed in. "What is in this 'contract' of yours?"

((I can't really do a whole lot since Jim's character was addressed directly. But I also think that we need to soon get the Brotherhood going. Whatever that entails. Maybe Swan takes over the revolution or something. Point is, I need to have Xordra wake up and lead the Brotherhood on a first mission. Marvin can stay back at first to finish the revolution; that's fine. Gorgie can even stay behind. But I need at least Xordra free to begin the Brotherhood of Anti-Tyranny and for him to meet the Negotiator again so they can get the Orphan airship thingy. Having said that, here's my response to the last two posts.))

Gorgie smirked at Tothin's joke. He didn't even realize that Swan had attempted a joke. But Swan's goals seemed truly righteous. "I agree with your goals, Swan. I can't speak for the rest of the group, but for me personally, the Clocksmiths sound like something I want to be a part of."...

"I didn't know I could trust you until now," Swan said, his elbows braced on the table as if in deep thought, "The Golden Raven is one of the greatest landmarks of this land before Julqq came. The fact that you traveled here, despite the fact that this place is now basically ground zero, shows that your ideals stand more important than your own hides. It shows that you're fighting for something that's going to bring this place back to where it was. Back to where it needs to be."

Marvin cocked his head slightly, intrigued but confused as to Swan's seeming allegiance with revolution causes. "I guess now's as good a time as any for a break. God knows we need it..." he said, looking down at the blood trail left by Lazlo's corpse, "I suppose you can take care of this place, then. I think it's time for me to take a trip. As for the rest of these guys, I don't know how receptive they'll be, but...well...good luck."

Marvin got up and walked around the table for a handshake. Swan's head was still angled toward the table, still deep in thought. It took him a few seconds to notice Marvin, a couple more to notice his hand.

"Happy trails," Swan said, "When you come back, I guarantee that things will be different. For the better."

Soul looked up at Marvin. "Can I come with you? I've never left the island, and-"

Swan nearly jumped out of his seat. "No!" he said, sitting bolt upright. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath, adjusting his tie as he did. "What I mean to say is...I think we could use Soul in the Clocksmiths. She has a...unique purpose. It would serve us well if you would stay here. We'd compensate handsomely, of course."

Behind his mask, Swan was grinning nervously.

A huge sigh of relief escaped Kradenosama. "Thank goodness!" he exclaimed, nearly throwing his notes all over the place. "Sorry guys. It's not that I am glad that we are unable to finish what we started, but I think all of us can agree that I'm not cut out for this sort of thing. Furthermore, I have all the research I need to update my database about this continent. Do not worry. I will keep tabs on the progress that this revolution takes as I support it."

"So you're leaving then?" Tothin asked with a quizzical expression.

"Yes, I suppose so. Now that I know that I can go into this contraption I have and arrive back at my place, I will," Kradenosama answered, motioning to his device. "It was good to meet all of you. I hope all of you find what you are looking for and if not, I can help you. Just ask if any of you ever need information."

"Wait," Fas said. "Thanks for everything. You made me believe more than I could have guessed. Before you go, I do have one last question. Who is Abigail? Is she really your aunt, like you claim?"

"Abigail is a Maiar like myself, who took a human form...like myself," Kradenosama replied, adjusting his glasses. "She was created as someone to keep me continuing to find knowledge. Her flaw is her fake eye, and her power is being able to see everything that I do. I call her my aunt, because she looks after me like an aunt does. Not like a mother or a father, but an aunt. She is very helpful and that's why she lives with me." He gazed off into the distance reminiscing, then he remembered himself and hopped inside the portal of his contraption. "Ta-ta," he said and with that, was out of the South Pole.

"What a character," Tothin laughed. "I'm with you, Marvin. I think that I've gotten closer to what I should do, but what I really need is to clear my head. A trip can do that. I have no reason not to trust you, Swan, and you seem like you're a good guy. Good luck, and sorry about impaling you in the head."

Fas smiled as Kradenosama left. Though she would miss him and never forget him, she would not miss his eccentricity. She was sure that she would see him again someday. "Well, my boots brought Kradenosama and me here, who knows when they'll activate again. I'd like to stick with my best friend after we haven't seen each other for a long time so I'll go with you Tothin. The question is, where?"

"You are so serious!" Tothin chuckled. "I don't worry about little details like that."

"That's not a little detail," Fas protested. Then she looked at Gorgie, a sleeping Xordra, Marvin, Heatsroke, Eli, and Calliope. "Any suggestions, guys?"

BOBBY XORDRA Kaliendar and GORGIE Porgie Johnson.
JIM CALLIOPE Easter, ELI Solomon, HEATSTROKE (Sacha Mstislav), SOUL, SWAN, and SWORDSMAN (Marvin Cuprous).
TRUE RED FAS Gli and TOTHIN Kanos.
BENJI Cuprous.

--- Meanwhile in Xordra's mind... ---

"Guys, guys, stop," though annoyed, Xordra had an amused smile on his face, "I can hear what's being said through you. I don't need a recap every five seconds." His split RELIC had been giving him a continued barrage of updates about the situation outside Xordra's unconscious body.

"Well then," said Dina. "Maybe we won't talk at all."

Bil snorted, "Fat chance of that happening."

Xordra rolled his mind's eyes. He was happy for the internal comedy to dampen the seriousness of the world outside. However, he knew that he had to take charge soon here. And that required waking up. "Any chance you guys can speed up the repair process? I need to help out in the real world. I have a feeling that my Brotherhood idea may be about to take wing."

Dina and Bil conversed rapidly with one another before Bil said, "We can give you 2 hours of awake time before we'll have to knock you out again. You understand this is for your own good. You weren't ready for the power of our final release yet."

As Xordra got prepared to wake up, Gorgie was feeling torn. He knew what Marvin, Tothin, and Fas had in mind ((The Brotherhood, right?)) but he knew he couldn't just abandon his fellow revolutioneers. He was about to suggest that they wake Xordra up for a moment when Xordra awoke of his own accord.

Unsteady at first, Xordra got up off the cot and surveyed the scene around him.

"Before anyone says anything, just know that I have two hours of consciousness before my body effectively has to shut down again. That RELIC final release really takes a lot of you," Xordra explained to all those gathered. "I too agree with your contract, Swan. I heard everything that was said and have a pretty good idea that any questionable nuance in the contract has already been looked over by my friends here." He started to do some light stretching as he talked.

He looked Tothin, Fas, and Gorgie in the eyes in turn and then said, "I believe Marv-excuse me, I believe the Swordsman has the right idea to take this opportunity to take a break from the current strife. I had previously made a proposition to him and you three and I think now is a good time to see that it takes wing."

Gorgie blurted out, "I still think that some of us should remain here and help with the fight. Swan's help will be awesome, but money and equipment can only get you so far. I'll stay behind to help out here."

Xordra smiled at Gorgie, an amused expression on his face, "I think that is an excellent idea, Gorgie. I would have done the same had the idea not been mine originally. We will contact you if we need your assistance. He turned to Swan and said, "If you'll excuse us, we will take our leave. I have every confidence you will fulfill your promise to the Swordsman. Good luck to all of you," he said, turning to Heatstroke, Calliope, Eli, Soul, Benji ((I think Benji's still there)), and Swan.

Xordra caught up to the Swordsman and conversed about his plans.... ((I'll make a new topic soon involving the first official Brotherhood-related topic.))
