I walked over to the cave that night, and once again I heard that chanting. The voices called me into the room. I slowly creeped in, extremely wary of the crackling ice around me. The tunnel started getting narrower, and at the end, I just barely fit. Inside was a grand chamber, filled with ancient frescoes telling stories in a forgotten tongue. At the back wall was a sanctuary with an ice statue of the Virgin Mary sitting on a shelf. "Can't say I didn't warn you, Rolf." I jumped and turned around to the source of the voice, and there was Joe. I looked closer and saw something very interesting about him. His face was entirely made of wax. He didn't have eyes, rather bumps where they would've been, free of pupils. "What the hell is this?" I asked. "This? This is your death." Joe said, "I told you to leave. I warned you about what would happen. Now here we are." "Please don't kill me! I'm a good man, with a family!" "I'm not going to kill you, and I fully understand that." Joe explained. There was a long pause. "You know, you were supposed to live until 90." "40 more years?" "Supposed to, Rolf. Some things that look good on paper don't turn out too well in the real world. You chose to do this great expedition to escape from your family. Now, in this church, you'll die. Shame, dying at fifty." Joe folded his hands in front of his body. I don't know what happened, but I started to wheeze and choke on my breath. My lungs were a hotbed of flame, then as cold as Pluto on a winter night. I crumpled to the floor. "Please! I don't want it to be this way!" "It didn't have to be this way, Rolf. You could have lived happily ever after." "No, I couldn't have," I choked out, "My family didn't love me!" "Your family DID love you, you fool! Don't you see? They were planning to throw you a surprise party to show you just that, and that party was supposed to begin in..." Joe looked at his watch, "...thirty seconds. Instead of going to that party, you're going to die. Right here, right now, in the cold. In all likelihood, they'll never find your body, and that's a shame. At least, if they did, they'd know to be sad instead of angry." "Angry?" I coughed "Yes, angry, you putz! How the hell did you think they would feel? Happy? Why would anyone be happy after being blatantly abandoned?" "I'm sorry! I'll do better, I promise! Please, just...give me another chance! " "No, Rolf. Your time is up." My eyes slowly closed. "Shine on, you crazy diamond." Edited by Jim, Jan 16 2009, 13:31.

Burn it up'n tear it down Raze this city to the tarnished ground While the war pigs falsely weep The city will lie in a golden heap - "A Dream", Me "Total slaughter, total slaughter. I won't leave a single man alive. La de da de die, genocide. La de da de dud, an ocean of blood. Let's begin the killing time." -Vash the Stampede | |
