Day 6 Finally, a place where I can consistently and reliably get food! (Wow, I haven't used that lingo since my days at the ol' lumberyard!) This magical vortex out in the middle of the ice shelf is brimming with fish. Ironic, ain't it? Yep, I caught my fair share of pike and walleye here, and it doubles as a great spot to just sit and...think, y'know? I bet that's something our ancestors loved to do, yes indeedy! Anyway, I dropped a weight with 3 miles of line attached to it (all the line that I had) into the maelstrom, y'know, for s's and g's. At first I felt it pull, which is pretty standard-issue for a maelstrom, but beyond that I swear that I felt a tug on the line when I dropped it down. The tugging got more and more powerful, and eventually sucked down my line and my weight! I dove for the line, to try to recover it (3 miles of line, man!) and caught nothin' more than a cough and a wicked headache. There's more, though. When I went down there, looking into the crystal clear water under the ice, I swear I saw an eye, just lookin' at me and such. It darted away before I could get a real good look at it, but I swear I saw somethin' out there! I shook it off and turned back home, what else could I have done? I have to find some more line, or things are gonna start gettin' awful hard 'round here... Edited by Jim, Dec 27 2008, 15:59.

Day 9 Joe, again. He keeps sittin' behind me, an' just when I turn back, I find he stole my galdurn bait, ag'in! Well, I just kept right on fishin', caught Frank again today, n' questioned what he's doin' here, when he said "Excuse me!". I replied, with "My mistake" and dropped him right back in the lake. Oh, you don't know about Frank? Well, he's just my best friend! He's a marlin, an' he tells me headwinds took him up north. He tells me it's all gon' be all right, and I believe him. Frank would never ever steer me wrong! Anyway, he 'n I had a long conversation, 'n he tells me the eye in the maelstrom is my friend! He says her name's Jenny, and she's just as gentle as the Jolly Green Giant! I took a dive in to talk to Jenny myself, an' saw her at the bottom, sittin' with her skelly buddies (Musta been a hunderd of 'em!). I go 'n talk with her for 'bout an hour, 'bout sports an' such, an' just when she reaches down with her tentacles to give me a kiss on the cheek, Frank rushes in an' stabs her tentacle, then brings me to the surface! I ask'd him why he'd go an' do that, an' he says nothin' That's all right, I reckon, Frank would never steer me wrong. |
