"In a show of technological wizardry, the robotic explorer Curiosity blazed through the pink skies of Mars, steering itself to a gentle landing inside a giant crater for the most ambitious dig yet into the red planet's past." Yahoo news. |

This is likely the most important thing that NASA has done since Neil and Buzz landed on the Moon. Not only have they validated a method of landing men on Mars, this rover is nuke powered and has sensors aplenty. For one, it can sniff for methane and figure out whether it is organic or inorganic in origin. Plus a lot more. |

According to CNN, obama said this was an un precedented event. I wonder if his memory was short? Viking 1 -- 1976 Viking 2 -- 1976 Pathfinder/Sojourner -- 1997 Spirit -- 2004 Opportunity -- 2004 Phoenix -- 2008 obama is the only person who can increase Joe Bidens IQ, by just standing next to him. |

Nice going. Turn it into something political. I could have said something crass like way to go Obama. Actually it is an unprecedented feat due to the tricky nature of landing it. |

Exactly. It is one thing to drop a hundred pounds onto the surface in a soft shell (balloons), let it bounce to a stop before deployment of the package. It is totally another thing to arguably SET one metric ton on the surface intact without damage to hundreds of critical systems used in mobility, communications, and research. |

The landing was a technological tour de force arguably more complex than landing men on the moon. |

Absolutely a milestone. Now we can start selecting a site for landing equipment necessary for establishing a Martian base. We'll need a few more unmanned missions first, to land a nuclear powered fuel/oxygen factory, habitat/supply pods, tools and equipment, etc. to prepare for our first manned Mars mission. Chip |

" NASA's budget, just over $18.7 billion this year, is still expected to rise again in 2011, reports Space.com, though by much less than the $1 billion increase NASA and its contractors have been privately anticipating since mid-December. A White House-appointed panel, led by former Lockheed Martin chief Norm Augustine, urged these changes on the administration in December." You are a strange lot! Constantly b****ing about Obama overspending, now complaining because he is increasing NASA funding by slightly less than a billion dollars. What does it take to satisfy you? |

There hasn't been a serious manned space program since Nixon gutted NASA 30 years ago. The Space Shuttle was a tow truck looking for a job. |

Yeah but without even a space garbage truck anymore, let alone a 35 yr. old tow truck, what will all that money be used on? I'll tell you. Muslim outreach and attempting to lend credibility to the anthropogenic global warming lie. Let's see, NASA says so (or Obama will cut their funding), so global warming (excuse me, I mean a much easier to prove climate change) must be true. I don't have to see the scientific data when the political ramifications make climate change a foregone conclusion. Why not put the money where it's really needed. 1. Earth colliding asteroid/comet detection and intervention. 2. Manned space mission to mars. 3. Permanent Lunar and Martian colonies (seed stock in case the asteroid intervention mission fails.) 4. Feasibility studies for Venusian terraforming, SETI, earth 2 planetary system detection (space telescope arrays, interstellar probes, etc.), and development of possible interstellar drive/colony ship projects. The space shuttle was the result of good old fashion compromise and ended up with an overly complex machine to do too many different sorts of missions- barely. |

I wonder if we will be able to find a crater or shaft that goes into the interior of the planet and see if any bacteria or bacteria byproducts and gases come up from it. If we find anything like that, does anyone know if the rover has any deployable mini-rovers that can go into those shafts? |

i think the only real chance of us sending maned missions to mars is to make it pay e.g find something mine able that is worth the effort or something else like sell of the land. |
