Russia has been banned from competing at next year's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang by the International Olympic Committee.

But Russian athletes who can prove they are clean would be allowed to compete in South Korea under a neutral flag.

It follows an investigation into allegations of state-sponsored doping at the 2014 Games hosted by Russia in Sochi.

"This should draw a line under this damaging episode," the IOC said.

IOC president Thomas Bach made the announcement in Lausanne on Tuesday.

Bach and his board have come to their decision after reading through the findings and recommendations of a 17-month investigation headed up by the former president of Switzerland, Samuel Schmid.

Wow, this is even more severe than their punishment at Rio 2016 :O . There, it was left to individual sports to decide whether or not to allow them to compete.

Still, at least those who weren't part of the doping program will be allowed to compete as neutrals.

I remember there being a big deal about them the last Olympics and drama over if they could compete under their country's banner or forced to run under the generic IOC team banner.

I just don't like banning the entire team when only some of them broke the rules. Those that didn't do anything wrong are now punished to either not go or try to attempt going solo under the generic IOC banner and can't even truly represent their own country.

Yeah, and of course they're going to complain that this is political. I honestly wonder if there is a SMALL political element to this, but at the same time even if there isn't, I disagree with this extreme move. There are at least some clean athletes in Russia. Let 'em play for Russia.

Between this and Gary Buttmunch... er... Bettman barring NHL hockey players from playing at Pyeongchang, this means the hockey's gonna suck so bad this year. :(
