http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-33607493 Council-funded museums and galleries across the UK are considering scrapping free entry as cuts bite, the head of the Museums Association has said. York Art Gallery will introduce a £7.50 entrance fee after the body that runs it had its council subsidy cut by 60%. That follows Brighton Museum and Art Gallery's decision to charge tourists. Museums Association president David Fleming said charging for entry was now on the agenda at many other venues that face local council funding cuts. "I'm absolutely certain that museums all over the country are considering introducing admissions fees in order to try to help plug the gaps that are appearing in their budgets," he said. But the move would only be successful in towns and cities that attract a significant number of tourists, he added. I have to admit, free admission to museums has always seems like a bit of a gimmick to me, especially for the most famous museums which would be able to survive and thrive by charging admission fees. The smaller, less well-known ones, on the other hand, would probably have trouble generating enough income from admissions if their subsidies were taken away. (However, it is only the local ones that would be affected by this. The high-profile ones in London would all be keeping their subsidies and staying free!) |

thats because why would the galleries in london ever need to be effected by such a lowly concept as loss of funding? lol. |

7.50 is a lot for a museum. it will be really sad if they do start to charge they should be free imo |

If they cost £7.50 to enter, I'd probably still visit most of the ones I go to. I'd still happily visit those related to my areas of interest, and I'd still visit some when I'm on holiday and looking for something to do. I probably wouldn't visit one just to pass a bit of time - but then, that's something I only occasionally do now. |
