Investors are seeking funding from the UK government for an ambitious plan to import solar energy generated in North Africa.

Under the scheme, up to 2.5 million UK homes could be powered by Tunisian sunshine by 2018.

The company involved says they have already spent 10 million euros developing the site.

A number of overseas energy producers are competing to bring green energy to the UK from 2017.

The TuNur project aims to bring two gigawatts of solar power to the UK from Tunisia if the company wins a contract for difference (CFD) from the British government.

Hopefully, something like this can be built and be successful. The Sahara Desert is gigantic, after all, and presumably a great source of solar energy!

with how massive the desert is you have loads of area to work with, however they have to be careful of dust storms and have good protection so bandits don't try to steal the valuable panels.

Given how sparsely populated the Sahara is (only about 2.5 million people live in the whole thing), I don't expect bandits to be a major problem, so I think security should be easy enough to arrange.

As for the dust storms, that just means we have to be nice to Eric :P .

lol he does not control night and day like a USAS-12 can! but no if one was to fill 25% of the sahara with solar panels you can only imagine how much power that could generate.

Oh yeah, that would be a really good source of solar energy. I guess it's just being planned at this point, but I wouldn't be surprised if this works as well as they're hoping. It's a good idea.

you would be surprised at how cost-effective it would be in the long run though.

One thing that worries me a bit is that, because the technology is still improving, a massive array like this might be obsolete as soon as it's completed :P .

(I had intended to say that much earlier - but it turns out I posted it in completely the wrong thread by mistake! :headdesk: )

i was going to say something but i kept it to myself since i enjoyed snickering at it :D, perhaps it could indeed be, but if they plan correctly then it can be upgraded with time thus making it adaptable which triples it's value.

well with the type of cloth they wear i suppose that makes sense, plus with how the land was settled by Europeans over time and from egypt.

i still look forward to this solar power idea.
