China's campaign to bulldoze mountains to create land to build on could cause extensive environmental problems, scientists say.

Researchers from Chang'an University in China have warned that dozens of mountains have already been flattened - and this is causing air and water pollution, soil erosion and flooding.

They say that this activity is happening on an unprecedented scale.

They report their concerns in the journal Nature.

Prof Peiyue Li, from Chang'an University's School of Environmental Science and Engineering, said: "Because there have been no land creation projects like this before in the world, there are no guidelines."

This seems like a pretty inefficient way to create land. Is there nothing better that they can do?

Japan builds around mountains and trees to preserve as much nature as possible.

China is digging themselves into a rut more and more everyday. I like how the US is so environmentally friendly but they allow China (who makes all of their crap) pollute more than anyone. Their nation is doomed at this point and once the world wakes up and realizes that they need to be put down it'll already be too late for their people.

And even if they had the ability to make a massive construction like the X-Seed thing, they wouldn't do it due to strategical reasons.
