Channel Islands

A very minor case of serious brain damage

I thought I'd already started a topic about the Channel Islands, but it turns out I haven't :P .

Anyway, the Channel Islands are located in the English Channel, off the coast of Normandy. For administrative purposes, they're divided into two 'bailiwicks': the Bailiwick of Jersey (which consists of Jersey and the surrounding islets), and the Bailiwick of Guernsey (which consists of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm and the surrounding islets).

Their political status is a bit unusual. Both bailiwicks are British Crown Dependencies (that is, possessions of the British Crown); they are part of neither the United Kingdom nor the European Union. The islanders are full British (and European) citizens, but they don't benefit from the EU's freedom of movement unless they have some close link with the UK (a parent or grandparent from the UK), or have lived in the UK continuously for at least five years.

Myself, I've been on three occasions. I went to Jersey in 2002 and 2003 (the latter visit included a day trip to Guernsey), and then to Guernsey in 2005 (which included a day trip to Herm). There was quite a bit to see and do: highlights include the Durrell Wildlife Park, the German underground hospital from World War II, a couple of castles, and some very nice beaches :P .

Have you ever visited them?
