http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/9161161/Hill-a-fan-of-double-points Former World Champion Damon Hill has admitted that he is a fan of the controversial double points rule. The rules change, which allows for double points to be awarded for the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, has come under much criticism, with Hill's Sky Sports colleague Martin Brundle labeling the concept as "an answer to a question nobody was asking" and current Drivers' Champion Sebastian Vettel branding it "absurd". Hill, on the other hand, is unsure what the fuss is about and believes the rule simply means the season's final race will serve as the season's 'final'. "Personally, I don't see what the story is about. Winning the World Championship is the goal and if it gets more and more intense towards the end, and there is more at stake at the end of the championship, then that should be more exciting," Hill told Sky Sports News. "If you go to Wimbledon and you are in a knock-out competition it then gets more crucial and more important the closer you get to the final - and the final is worth a lot more points than the first round." Very disappointing, IMO. I find Hill's arguments in support of double points to be very specious. Unlike a knockout tournament, the F1 season doesn't need a 'final' - especially not if it's going to be the usual Abu Dhabi snorefest. As for comparing World Championship points in F1 to ATP ranking points at Wimbledon....he's comparing apples and oranges there. Each round at Wimbledon offers roughly the same total number of points; it's just that in each successive roung, they're just distributed between progressively fewer players. What are your thoughts? |

I mean, let's see what would happen if every match at Wimbledon was worth the same number of ATP ranking points (say, 100). 6400 points would be given out in the first round. 3200 points would be given out in the second round. 1600 points would be given out in the third round, etc. More than half of the total points on offer would be awarded for first-round matches - within the first two days of the tournament. In each round, there would be half as many points on offer as before - and by the time you reached the later rounds, there would be very little to play for in terms of ranking points. Formula One has no such problem. Half the total points are not awarded after the first two races: they are awarded during the first half of the season. |
