A very minor case of serious brain damage

Giselle mentioned the Messier objects a couple of days ago in another thread, so I thought I'd start a topic about them :P .

Anyway, for those of you who don't know, the Messier objects are a list of astronomical objects compiled by French astronomer Charles Messier in 1771. These are all objects that resemble comets, but aren't: Messier was only interested in comets, and he listed these objects in order to avoid wasting time on them. Most of them are star clusters, nebulae and galaxies, and they include some of the most famous deep sky astronomical objects, such as the Crab Nebula (M1), the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), and the Orion Nebula (M42).

Do you know much about these objects? Have you ever observed any of them?
