A very minor case of serious brain damage

Here's a topic for general discussion of the Ottoman Empire. Since what I know about it would probably fit on the back of a postcard, I'll open with the beginning of the empire's entry in the Civilopedia:

Quote:

The Ottoman Empire was born in Anatolia (in modern Turkey) at the start of the 13th century. It expanded into three continents and thrived for some six centuries. Many Americans know very little about the Ottoman Empire (it occupies the blind spot Americans have for pretty much everything between Greece and China). This is a great pity, for the Ottoman Empire was vast, powerful, and extremely interesting.

If you do know a lot about the Ottoman Empire, would you agree with the Civilopedia's assessment of it? If you don't know so much about it (like myself), would you like to learn more?

I know a little about it from my WW1 studies, but by then, It wasn't even a compassion to its former glory.

Yeah, it had long since passed its peak by then.

I didn't learn anything about it at school at all. All of what little I know of it comes from either Civ 5 or random browsing of Wikipedia.

Well, my school didn't mention the Barbary Corsairs at all.

At primary school, all the world history I did was from before the Ottoman Empire existed, and at secondary school, I don't think I did any world history at all until the 20th Century, by which time they'd lost a lot of their influence.

When I did A-level history, we did cover the Greek War of Independence in the context of the UK's international relations in the 1800s. However, we didn't go into very much depth.

Maybe that's my problem, then. I didn't do A-level History :P .

This was partly because I was told it was really boring (I don't know how accurate that assessment is), but mostly because I wanted to focus on maths and science-related subjects that were more relevant to the degree I wanted to do.

When I was doing my History back in High-school we didn't study anything really of the Ottomans, we studied the history of Medicine and Surgery through Pre-History all the way to the 18th Century.

You learn some pretty interesting stuff

Wow, this is just turning into "What did you study in history?" :P .

To get us back on-topic, here's a gif showing the Ottoman Empire's territorial evolution:
