http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21350899 The nearest habitable, Earth-sized planet could be just 13 light-years away, research suggests. An analysis of small, dim "red dwarf" stars - which make up a majority of stars in our galaxy - shows that 6% of them host such a planet. The results will appear in Astrophysical Journal. Study co-author David Charbonneau of Harvard University said the findings had implications for the search for life elsewhere. "We now know the rate of occurrence of habitable planets around the most common stars in our galaxy," said Prof Charbonneau. "That rate implies that it will be significantly easier to search for life beyond the solar system than we previously thought." I know we've heard a lot about exoplanets recently, but this is pretty amazing .

That is incredible. It's always been a curious question to know if life truly does exist somewhere far from our very own planet, so it's cool to know that there are chances of finding one not too far off from here. XD |

Theoretically, it would be possible to make a return trip within a lifetime. I'm not sure many people would be willing to do that, though! |

Would be kind of sad if you went all the way over there and found nothing on the 'Earth'

Make a flag. Name it. Claim it for the UK. And then turn it into a prison camp. What? We did it with Australia... |

Only trouble with that idea is, as soon as the prisoners arrive there, they'll have served their sentences and have to go back !

Well, Antarctica would probably be a better place for that sort of thing .(Actually, I think the BNP want to set up a penal colony there....) |
