A main-belt asteroid, previously designated 2008 QH24, has been named after Wikipedia. Its description on the JPL Small-Body Database is:

Quote:

274301 Wikipedia Discovered 2008 Aug. 25 at Andrushivka.
Wikipedia is a free, copyleft, collaboratively edited online encyclopedia launched in 2001. In 11 years of its compilation it became one of the largest reference works and one of the most visited web-sites on the Internet. It is developed in more than 270 languages by enthusiasts from all over the world.
A bit of an odd name for an asteroid, but then, I guess there are asteroids named after all sorts of random things!

That could be the basis for a game: thing of properties that asteroids should have, based on their names :P .

Maybe the astronomer who discovered 12372 Lancearmstrong was on drugs at the time :P ?

Does that mean it'll have its name changed :P ?

I don't know, but it does seem even odder to have an asteroid named after the world's biggest sports cheat than to have one named after Wikipedia :P .

Wonder why they named it that. Can anybody edit the asteroid?

.

I'm pretty sure an asteroid's name can't be changed after it's discovered.

It's like changing the name of Halley's Comet. Who the hell would change its name?

Well, maybe they would in the (highly unlikely) event that Edmond Halley was discovered to have been a fraud :P .

When I asked if anybody could edit it, I was referring to the website Wikipedia. Someone could just get on a computer and make the asteroid bigger or something, lol.
