http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21144769 A new venture is joining the effort to extract mineral resources on asteroids. The announcement of plans by Deep Space Industries to exploit the rare metals present in the space rocks turns asteroid mining into a two-horse race. The other venture, Planetary Resources, went public with its proposals last year. Advocates of asteroid mining hope it could turn into a trillion-dollar business, but some scientists are highly skeptical of the idea. It's an interesting idea, but I'm afraid I have to side with the skeptical scientists. I can't see how this will ever be cost-effective. |

I heard about this too on TV. I think it's interesting, too bad it's not practical. |

I suppose it may become viable one day if we become desperate. |

Some bad news for this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-25716103 Apparently, a new study has found that only a few asteroids would ever be worth mining. |

Well even so, couldn't they still attempt to mine some of those 10 asteroids? If any are worth mining at all, then they might as well mine the ones we can. |

I expect they will. It just means their start-ups aren't going to become multi-billion dollar businesses from their asteroid mining activiies. (Unless there's hyperinflation, I guess !)
